Blacksmith Build

I think a great armor would be the Savior's Hide, the quest for it is quite easy and something that an "average man" could do. Although I would suggest it being your later-game goal for what you would wear.
Spoiler
The Savior's Hide is one of the Daedric artifact of Hircine, obtained by going to Falkreath and entering the jail to speak with Sinding. By killing Sinding for the quest, you get the Savior's Hide.

As for Eorlund, doesn't he just wear hide armor?
Oh, okay. I just don't want nothing too specialised looking. Something simplistic that looks comfortable enough a blacksmith would wear for hours a day.

What should this guy's combat style be, as there are points in the game when it just isn't avoidable? Bear in mind that he is an Orc, but also not meant to be a super warrior.

A blacksmith should either be using axes (two of them) or a shield and a mace IMO. A two-handed weapon doesn't "fit", at least in my opinion it doesn't.

Cleary a warhammer is in order, after all you're going to be getting pretty familiar with hammers. And even if you don't want to do enchanting, I think a great thing to do would be find a way to the Throat of the World and grab the Notched Pickaxe for it's enchantment (Lightning damage and fortify smithing by 5)

Give him a beard. All blacksmiths need a beard. :disguise:

Even the female blacksmiths have a beard.

Also, where can I obtain health potions as I want to avoid all magic - even Restoration. As for warhammers, where can I obtain one early within the game? Also, how can I level blacksmithing early.

At any alchemy store they usually carry several healing potions.

You might be buying those health potions, Arcadia's Cauldron(Whiterun), The Hag's Cure(Markarth), and The Morter and Pestle(Dawnstar) are going to be seeing you a lot.

An easy way to get a warhammer would be to make it (you are a blacksmith after all) or buy one. There is a Daedric artifact warhammer, but Daedric clothes and weapons might be a bit more mystical and adventurous than you're going for.

As far as leveling goes, leather armor is cheaper to make than iron at first, especially if you supplement smithing with hunting deer and wolves. Once you hit 30 smithing, go with the Dwarven smithing perk. If you're going to delve into Dwarven places, you'll have all the ingots you will ever need to level smithing.

So, I am looking to build a male Orc Blacksmith who came to Skyrim to learn the art of his trade. I have some questions first, though.
  • What is the general history and relations of the Orc people? Where do they come from and what is their general attitude towards life, political issues, and the other races themselves?
  • What quests, off the top of your heads, are suitable for a blacksmith type character?
  • Warhammers are apparently well-suited, so how can I obtain one fairly early on within the game?
  • How can I level Smithing early on within the game?

I think you have the answers to everything but 1 in your thread, eh?
As for the orcs... well, hopefully an expert on Orsinium is reading.

1: Orcs are generally pro-empire and are prized in the legion for their smithing and roles as beserkers. They generally work with heavy metals. They often live in tight family clans, but are also found mixed in with normal society. Many Orcs worship Malacath, their Daedric Leader and creator.

2. There aren't really any quests for smithing, but the companions offer new smithing recipes.

3. There's a good chance you can et an iron warhammer off the Stormcloaks in the beginning of the game if you go with Hadvar. Fairly common on bandits. You could just smith one.
