Blender 2.9 or 2.5 alpha?

Post » Sat Jul 31, 2010 8:56 am

Hi, I was going to download Blender but I don't know which version to get. I heard 2.5 alpha has a better UI. If I get the new version I don't know how many tutorials are out there. Best advise?

To model for Morrowind you're best off using 2.4.9 as that version has the best compatability. The newer versions have new features that don't nescisarily work with Morrowind. I've not been able to get the export scripts to work with version 2.9. You could use 2.5 but some of the interfaces have changed slightly from what is shown on most of the morrowind specific tutorials. There are neither the less a plathoria of modeling tutorials available for blender for each version. You can google blender tutorial and search youtube for "blender tutorial" to find lots of help.

Is the UI in 2.9 customizable? I just saw 2.5 UI and it does look more organized.

It is. It can not however be used to model for Morrowind. You could create you model in 2.9 save it as a blender file, load it into blender 2.4.9 and then export it to .nif format. But only if you do not use any of the features of 2.9 that are not available in 2.4.9. It is much easier to simply use 2.4.9 as that is the latest version with a working exporter.

Although 2.9 has additional options available and a nicer interface those options do no benifit in that they are not supported by the Morrowind game engine. Version 2.9 is a great 3d modeling package so it is well worth getting if you do any modeling outside of Morrowind moding.
