Blindness

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 3:21 am

As some of you may remember, in Oblivion, blind moth priests had blindfolds and, if I'm not wrong, I remember them using katanas (or at least some of them did).
That all reminded me Zatoichi, a blind swordsman from the Japanese movie of the same name that I watched when I was younger.
Since then, I always wanted to play as blind swordsman in a game.
So what I would like to suggest is that there is ether option in character creation where you can set yourself to be 'blind' (it would only be cosmetic) and could choose from 3 kind of 'blindness'.
One would make your eyes white, one would make your character constantly keep your eyes closed and one would give you a blindfold over your eyes (would be nice it could be colored in color we want).
I repeat, those above would be purely cosmetic changes on your character and would have no actual effect on gameplay and you would actually see normally.

Also, there could be an unique item (Zatoichi's Blindfold?) instead that will turn us into a 'blind guy' who uses his other senses to navigate around by giving us bonuses that will create an illusion of that.
Item would be a simple blindfold and it would be a cloth helm.
Bonuses from it would be that you have constant night-eye and detect life in 300ft.
Those two effect combined would make it seem as if you were blind, but use other senses to navigate around.

And yeah, none of these should actually make you blind, remove your eyesight and try to make you play using only sound or anything like that.
First suggestion is only cosmetic change just like your hair color or nose shape.
Other is just an item that will give you constant night-eye and detect life in 300ft and that's that.
The idea is that it tries to make you look blind and not actually become blind.
It's for RP reasons since I doubt that I'm only Zatoichi or Daredevil fan.
Also, I think that there cold be a nice sum of people who would like to RP as blind moth priest so there is an actual reason why this would be good idea.

Anyway, your thoughts on this please.

Morrowind has the "Blind" spell affect which makes you blind. My favorite enchanted item was "Boots of Blinding speed". Gave you 200 to you speed and 100% blindness.

I'm not sure if there can be any benefit in a video game from removing your eyesight, seeing as all that leaves you with is sound to rely on, which isn't a very good way to go about doing things.

Wasn't there a mod where you was blind? I'm sure that was a mod for either Oblivion, or maybe another game. I just remember it being very well received.

Well, lets not forget Spore did this, granted it shaded out like...15% of the screen. But it did. Id like to see like if something happens to you (flash of light, bomb, fire, staring at the sun) you would go blind for awhile, and you would have a 50-50 chance of being perma blind.

Probably not gonna see it happen, but a setting that removed most of the brightness on the screen except a permenent detect life spell would be pretty cool to try for a playthrough.

Just the thing I wanted to say.

I loved that item. ^^

I said that this wouldn't make you actually blind.
'Blindness' on character creation is purely cosmetic like I already said and Blindfold will not make you actually blind, but make an illusion of you being blind by giving you constant night-eye and detect life so it looks like you are using your other senses.

Wasn't there a mod where you was blind? I'm sure that was a mod for either Oblivion, or maybe another game. I just remember it being very well received.

I think there was.
I know that I tried to make a mod like that, but failed since I'm a knob when it comes to modding. :(

This is for role playing purposes.
Ever saw how Daredevil even though he's blind?

Yeah, except that playing a game solely on sound or detect life would still be pretty hard, and I don't think it would give you the feeling of being blind (but who would actually want to be blind...?). I mean, imagine...you'd end up walking into the water, bumping into trees, and then you come across an enemy...? eek... it would be nothing like real life, in which case blind people can actually do rather well for themselves. But in a game...I don't see it working no matter how they did it... But if it's just for the look of your character, like the person who suggested this appears to be implying, I guess if people wanted to do that, it wouldn't be an issue. But I really see no point in it--couldn't you just imagine that your character is blind? After all, people who are blind don't necessarily look any different than the rest of us. But, this is just my opinion, so it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things...

The idea with the Blindfold item is that it doesn't make you actually blind, but tries to make an illusion of it.
Constant night-eye and detect life combo will make it kinda look like that.
I never thought of making us try to be actually blind (would only turn of the screen then and play like that).
Also, we already had blind monk in Oblivion who did pretty good when it came to fighting so I don't really see problem when there.

yeah, I would like eye assecories, like eyepatches and blindfolds for my own reasons. that would be cool, the one thing that really buged me was that I could not wear the eyepatch in FO3 or NV

btw, people should actually read the OP, it says nothing about having a blacked out screen but having a character that was blind, for RP reasons (i assume), like as in when you looked at them in 3rd person the eyes would be pure white or shut.

Of course it's for RP reasons.
It's not like I'm blind or something, hehe. :)
Still, thanks for notifying people to actually read the OP.

Especially when you got your hands on certain armor that gave you 60% magic resistance. ^^

Ooh, that was cool. That was the horse riding of the time. When you heard the combat music you quickly put it off, fought the enemy, put it back on and you could run till the next road bend. :)
