Block, Athletics and Mercantile

I would like a simple system where you can go into your skills-menu and check a box next to the xp bar or whatever, and when that box is ticked the skill will not level up or gain any xp. That would make roleplaying more immersive for some.

I actually like this idea, for limiting your character in some things. Could you imagine the poor sap--no matter how hard he tries; no matter how much time he spends practicing, he never gets any better at it. Kind of like Shaq and free throws.

I've noticed after going back to oblivion, that mercantile, athletics and security are always close behind my major skills, and that's with a system where major skills are chosen and get a decent boost. (I have block as a major with my current character). In skyrim, if the issue isn't addressed, I can see those three skills becoming your character's primary skills or at least being equal to the rest, which takes away from leveling the way you'd like. Yes, you can force yourself to walk or not make much money, or even take the hits in combat, but that's not a good option. Hopefully we do see skill boosts of some sort with 'tagged' skills at least...or make it painfully hard to level up those certain skills

THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO WANT SKILLS TO INCREASE.
Seriously, there is no penalty for increasing skills that you don't really care about. The skills represent what your character does and how good he/she has become at it. Block and athletics represent what you do naturally in combat and there is no reason not to use these skills. When trading it's natural to want to get the best price, thus mercantile/speechcraft is perfectly understandable. And if attributes and skills are improved by perks leveling these skills might actually help improve your other skills, the ones you care about.

But if accidently level a skill you don't wish to you will not level as fast or may level faster.

Some people don't like that.

How do you not increase mercantile if you are selling and buying things? I can see this being a problem with no majors/minors?

Acrobatics and athletics are out so we dont have to worry about those..

I am expecting mercantile is out and instead the local economy system replaces it.

As for block... you wont get that if you dont actualy try to block but instead cast a spell to stop the baddy or heal yourself or just plain kill the baddy before it gets to you. But ya that could be annoying..

It depends on the character but I find that Block is essential with a Warrior Type Character. Athletics is one of the worst skills in Oblivion and I hope it's cut in Skyrim.

Athletics is gone(good riddance--not needed), but acrobatics is still in and should remain.

Good point about the city's economy. Never thought of that--so yeah mercantile could be completely gone too, as a skill anyway, but I would imagine that the speechcraft skill could still indirectly affect the prices you pay and the deals you get by opening up various branches of interaction and lines of dialogue with shopkeepers.
