Do block perks take effect without a shield?

Planning a character, need to know whether or not to invest in block perks because he won't be using a shield.

The description for the block perk says "blocking with weapon and shield" so you can invest in it for sure, just watch out for perks in that tree that say shield specifically as these would probably be useless with a weapon.

EDIT: no blocking while dual wielding.

No.

If you intend on using dual weapon or two handed just concentrate on those perks only.

Dual weapons have a really good (sort of) block anyway

Can you elaborate? As i understand, gamesas in an act of pure stupidity that only console users will understand, decided not to make it possible to block with two weapons equipped

I will hijack the thread, hope OP won't mind.

Maybe someone will know. Are the perks shield bash/deadly bash/ disarm bash worth taking? I've got some perks free and I really don't know if it is worth taking those perks, or they are rather useless.

Um.. wut? So far my only defence with dual wield weapons is an insane offence.. the slow time shout makes their high DPS even more potent.

Not stupidity, balancing. They already have the highest DPS of anything in-game, they logically have to give something up for that privilege or there'd be no point using anything else.

Your block perks will only work when you are blocking, with a weapon or a shield. If sword and empty hand lets you block, then the perks will apply. Be careful for the perks that mention shield only though.

Shield bash = win. Dragon about to breathe in your face? shield bash. Two handed bandit about to power attack you? shield bash. Mage about to blast your face off? Shield Bash. as long as you have the stamina, shield bash is ridiculously good. Deadly bash, not so sure about. Extra damage is great and all, but thats not the point of the bash itself. Disarm, i dont have yet. planning on getting it though.

Does a bash with the weapon, such as a two handed axe ( Hitting attack while blocking), will it stagger a dragon / interrupt it's breath at all?

Removing the ability to block is logical. Ok...

I havnt tried blocking with a 2 hander on my warrior but if quick reflexes procs with 2 hander block its 100000% worth taking, everything else you should skip, you really should really work your best to avoid taking too many or too strong hits if you are not using heavy armor and block (master difficulty).

Ok, thanks for the reply. But I made a mistake. I use shield bash and I LOVE it, but I meant to ask about POWER bash. What does it do? Does it knockdown the enemis or something like that? I guess it drains stasmina like hell.

As far as I can tell, it staggers them for a little longer, pushes them back and does more damage. Not quite as effective as your unstoppable force shout, but still good if they are on the edge of a cliff. It'll probably do respectable damage with the deadly bash feat, but i havent tried out deadly yet.

Shield bash = FUS
Power bash = FUS RO

In terms of staggering, of course.

Actually it is both logical from a balance perspective and also realistic. You can't block with dual weapons. You're probably thinking of something utterly stupid like holding them in front of you in a cross. No. That doesn't work in real life and there's no reason it should work in the game.
