Blood Dust and Rust. A tale of survival in the Capital Waste

A note to readers: This story contains scenes of graphic violence and strong language, hopefully censored by the defaults of posting. Use your imaginations.

If you like it, or don't, PLEASE offer your feedback. I plan on making this a long-running fic, and would be happy to incorporate any ideas, or any of your own characters to the storyline. So again, please let me know if you like, or anything you'd like to see more or less of. Thanks everyone.

-SMASH-

"[censored], why don't we just knock on the door if you're going to do that [censored], think you could have been any louder?" Spat Vox, as he climbed through the broken hospital window.

"Yeah, probably. You want me to break the other one and find out?" Smirked Sprocket

"Just shut up and stay low, we don't know who's in this place" replied Vox.

The two young men crept silently through the murky corridors of what was once St. Mary's hospital, a massive building they had often noticed looming in the distance as they crossed the wastes.

"This place gives me the creeps" Vox said quietly, running a filthy hand through his messy blonde hair.

"You're not afraid of ghoooosts are ya Voxy?" teased Sprocket.

"[censored] no. I'm afraid of falling through the goddam floor, while trying to outrun a pack of feral ghouls larger than my clip. Now shut up and stay close" Vox replied angrily.

Though the hostility was evident between the two, Vox, a tall young man of 19 and his partner Sprocket, a rambunctious dark-haired wastelander of the same age, had known one another long enough to recognize the humorous undertones of their bantering. They both knew that without one another, they would be completely alone or worse, dead. They met, as fate would have it, the day both of their parents died when raiders ambushed their caravans. The two rag-tag groups of merchants, scrappers and mechanics, had stopped to exchange goods on the outskirts of the DC ruins. They had never even heard the barrage of 50 caliber rounds whistling through the air until it was too late. Vox and Sprocket had run for what seemed like hours, covered in the blood of their friends and families until they were completely lost amongst the dust, and heaps of metal that blotted the skyline. That was nearly six years ago.

"Shh! What was that?" Sprocket asked as they made their way through the surgical ward, filling their bags with stimpacks, bandages, and sterile water.

"I didn't hear [censored]. Now you're the one who's spooked" Replied Vox.

"No seriously, I think I heard- " -SMASH- Sprocket had barely started to speak when the sound of glass shattering echoed down the corridor.

"Stay frosty, we got company" whispered Vox. Ducking behind a dusty receptionists desk, and pulling Sprocket down with him.

"No [censored], genius" Sprocket replied.

The two sat silently in the darkness and waited. After what seemed like an eternity, voices began to echo closer and closer.

"Aww man Whisky, I bet they gots a [censored] load of jet somewhere in this place maaan! Everybody I ever talked to said they was too scared to break into this crap hole!" Barked one voice.

"Yeah well I don't believe in any of that [censored] man, it's all rumors and stories to scare little kids and make 'em pee their pants, that's all it is Bloodclot, stories!" Replied another.

"Will you two shut the [censored] up, I don't care what you think about this dump. If I don't get a fix soon I'm gonna' shoot the both of you's for draggin' me into this place. It's dark, cold, and it smells like mole-rat crap. Now can it, you're makin' my headache worse!!" Screamed a third.

"Alriiiight alright Sick-o, keep your diapers on crybaby, you'll be droolin' on yourself in no time cause we just hit the mother load, accordin' to the map this is the surgical ward they're bound to be loaded with chems!" replied the first voice.

Vox unholstered his 10mm handgun and turned off the safety. Though he couldn't see him, he knew that beside him in the dark, Sprocket was doing the same.

"Raiders?." Sprocket whispered.

"Yeah, sounds like about three or four. Stay quiet, and try to get behind them, we could use that map they have. Once we're behind them, the second you see my flashlight flicker on, pistol-whip 'em til they're out cold, then tie them up with this surgical tubing. Try not to shoot anybody though, we don't want to draw any more attention to us until we know who or what is in this place" Replied Vox.

"Gotcha." Sprocket whispered back.

The raiders got closer and closer, bickering amongst themselves.

"Man are you sure we're in the right wing? This map is like a [censored]in maze man" Asked the second raider.

"How many times do I gotta tell you Whisky, just look around you and compare it to the [censored]in' map. Or are you too drunk to do that too?" Snarled the first raider.

"I told you Bloodclot, I aint' drunk! Specially not since we're breakin' into this old place. I wanna be able to run if I have to." Replied the second raider angrily.

"Yeah, well if you aint' drunk, read one [censored]in' thing on that map for me then! You read it out loud to me, and I get to pick what it is you're readin'! Gimme that thing!" Demanded the first raider.

"Fine [censored], I'll show you." Replied the second raider.

"Will you two pricks PLEASE knock it the [censored] off!" groaned the third raider.

"Can it Sick-o, or you aint' gettin' high for two weeks!" Yelled the second raider.

"Alright here, I picked you an easy one genius. Read those big Red letters written on the back of this. Nice and easy, and no other shapes or letters to distract ya' either!" Teased the first raider.

"Alright fine lemme see that thing? 'Property of Doctor Stein'. There ya happy now? I aint drunk and I can read fine. Who the [censored] is Doctor Stein anyway? Since when do you visit clinics?" Replied the second raider.

"Hell if I know. I found this old thing on a desk back there. Probably some old fart who used to give sponge bathes to little boys before the bombs dropped." Joked the first raider.

"Yeah I bet you wish that was you right about now don't ya' nancy boy." Laughed the second raider.

The raiders continued to fight amongst themselves as Vox and Sprocket crept closer and closer. By the time they were about 20 yards away from them, Vox and Sprocket could make out the silhouettes of the three men in front of them. They crept closer and closer every second. 15 yards?.. 10 yards?.5 yards?

-SLAM-

"ARRRRRRGH WHAT THE [censored]!!! SONUVA[censored] I STEPPED IN A BEAR TRAP" Screamed the first raider.

Sprocket dove behind a large empty supply crate, and Vox quickly followed. They peered around the edge cautiously as the other two raiders ran to help their partner when ?BANG- a flash and puff of smoke and the other two were trapped beneath a net of heavily weighted rope and barbed wire. They had stepped right on a pressure plate, activating the trap. All three of the raiders screamed in pain, drowning out the noise of a generator roaring to life in a neighboring corridor. Within seconds the faulty lights began to flicker. Just bright enough to make out the anguish on the raiders faces in between the flashes emitting from the ancient bulbs.

"Oh [censored], oh [censored], oh [censored]! We're dead man we're dead!" Cried the raider in the bear trap.

"Just shut up and let me cut my way outta this net without losing an eye and I'll get your cry-baby ass out of there!" Yelled the third raider, trapped with the second beneath the net.

Vox and Sprocket took advantage of the the momentary hysteria to retreat to their previous hiding place behind the receptionist's desk, close to a window that could be escaped from easily. It was there that they sat, and watched as the raiders struggled to free themselves. It was there that they heard the double doors at the end of the hallway slam as they were kicked open, and it was there that they learned they were most certainly not alone. A man strode down the center of the hallway. He stopped roughly twenty feet from the jumbled heap of raiders, who were now screaming in terror and pleading for their lives. The man wore a wasteland medic's outfit, consisting of a heavily blood-stained white tee shirt, and an equally blood-spattered pair of grey fatigue pants and heavy black boots. His hair was blonde was clipped short and uneven, his face a map of scars drawn by knifepoint. A surgical mask dangled around his neck and a pair of goggles rested atop his head. He addressed the raiders, appearing not to notice Vox and Sprocket perched behind the desk.

"May I help you gentlemen?" The man asked in a heavy German accent.

"Please?. Please sir, let us go!" Cried the first raider, grasping his leg in pain.

"Ahhh but it would be rude to leave so soon! You have only just arrived! Allow me to introduce myself, I am Doctor Stein, and you are currently guests in my beautiful estate!" He replied, standing beneath a flickering light bulb.

"W-we are h-honored sir! Please we would love to be your guests, but? but please sir can you free us from these traps? Please! We have caps, plenty of caps! And we haven't stolen anything! I swear" Cried the first raider again.

"Have I accused you of such things my friend? No, no, no, I have not! Alas I have not for you, but for your friends, one simple question! Do you enjoy puzzles?"

"Yeah, yeah, sure! Puzzles! Love 'em!" Laughed the second raider uncertainly.

"Wonderful, wonderful!" Replied Doctor Stein heartily, clapping his hands.

The two raiders beneath the net grinned sheepishly, while the first continued to moan in agony.

"And I ask, do you enjoy simple ones? Or difficult intricate ones, with many many pieces?" Said Doctor Stein curiously.

"Uhhh? both! Love 'em both!" Replied the second raider again.

"But what if you could only pick one?" Asked Doctor Stein, smiling.

"The second one? with lotsa' pieces. Those are fun? sure!" Said the second raider.

"Ahhhhh?. Shame, shame? Had you chosen the first one, you may have had a chance to put it back together. But this one is much too difficult for your simple minds. I personally, prefer intricate puzzles, much like the human body. But as with most intricate jigsaw puzzles attempted by simple men such as you, this one shall forever remain in pieces, scattered across the floor to be picked at occasionally, but never?complete."

And with that, Doctor Stein produced two rippers, simultaneously turning them on whilst smirking maniacally.

"I wish you luck!" He shouted over the roar of the rippers, just before plunging them into the chest of the first raider.

The sounds of his screams were quickly drowned out, by the roar of the rippers, the wet sound of flesh being strewn about and the shrill shriek of whirring metal colliding with bone. Sprocket and Vox watched in horror, as Doctor Stein reduced the first raider to little more than a heap of wet meat. They wanted so badly to look away as the other two raiders attempted to escape captivity, as the barbed wire tore through their bare flesh. And as Doctor Stein merely laughed, before throwing a metal hook into the tangled net and dragging the screaming raiders through the remains of their companion, and down through the double doors, the two young men did the only thing they could - They watched? gazing silently at the trail of blood that snaked down the dimly lit corridor, too frightened to move......

I do love what you wrote and think the storyline is just great. Vox and Sprocket remind me of best friends who like to mess with each other, but know when times....shall we say "messy" they will be scared out their minds together. :P I think it would be interesting to add a female charater who was captured by your german pyscho, but please if you do add her I rather her not be some whiney bimbo. Ha, otherwise keep on with the story and I cannot wait for you to continue it.
