Blood on Ice quest?

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 1:27 am

I know Skyrim is filled with countless bugs, but this one is one of the most annoying ones.

I did a lot of quests for the Stormcloaks until it says you can buy a house, but the guy you talk to doesn't let you.
So I looked online to find I needed to complete the Blood on Ice quest.

I have tried just about everything to get it started.
(Finished the Dark Brotherhood, entered and left Windelm 4+ times, came back at night, etc)

How on earth do I get this to start?

(And then I saw several people were complaining about bugs later on on this quest too.....)

An extremely glitchy quest. It never starts for some people, but works first time they enter the city for others.

this explains it:

i was confused as well.

Spoiler
the blood trail actually leads down the adjacent walk way into some houses. You just follow the trail up and around. lock pick the house that is abandoned there and search it, you will find the diary of the butcher and you can figure it out from there. I had a hell of a time figuring this out since I got confused about the trail leading to the catacombs below. Good luck hope it helps.

Is the house that is abandoned called "Hjerim?"

Because you can't lockpick that house for me. It requires a key.

BTW I don't see any blood trailers from the graveyard.

You can't buy the house unless you do the Civil War quest line; Blood on the Ice doesn't need to be started at all. If you do start it, you will need to complete it, completely (there are two parts of it if you do it one way).

You either need to complete the Imperial line or get to "Liberate Falkreath" in the Stormcloak line before you can buy the house itself.

That guy is confused as well. The graveyard scene needs to start first in order to see any blood trail. This quest never started for me.

Yes, but to get their you need to get the quest started. When I enter the city, their is no blood splat and nobody in the graveyards.

When you get to that quest, the Jarls assistant says "something unfortunate" happened, and he doesn't sell it. (something along those lines.)

You have to do Blood on the ice to get Hjerim.

Console commands can trigger the mission and complete it for you, but when you buy the house, the mist, cobwebs and bone shards will still be there. And the guest room upstairs wont have anything in it.

Be careful if you do get it to work.

Towards the end of the quest you are asked to aprehend the killer in action, yet you get a quest arrow that points them out in a certain building. If you go try to apprehend said person they will attack you, and are marked essential so you can't kill them. Also, you will get a bounty for attacking them again, and the quest will never resolve.

I couldn't get blood on the ice to start or buy the house after the imperial questline. I used console cheat to buy the house and complete blood on the ice

well I found the trail very deceptive and confusing,
Spoiler
when I enter the graveyard usually it should trigger something or someone to tell me where to go. The guard tells you about seeing the grave keeper. I had to read the strategy book ahead and actually see where to go on that one.

So, nobody knows a way to get this to work?
This has to be the most glitchy quest imaginable.

Yeah, this quest isn't starting for me at all. I've been to the city 5,000 times at different times of day, but the event that starts the quest never happens. Oh well - the suspense for the house is really building. ;)

Yea it's kinda annoying, as the whole reason I did the Stormcloak quests was to get that house.... :/

Anyway, the BF3 DLC releases tomorrow so I won't be trying to get this house for a while either way lol

The first time I bought the house, I didn't get the quest until after I had done so.

Even the wikis mention that the house can be purchased as long as the quest hasn't started; but this causes a bug with you being unable to clean up the house.

I tried several times, and it didn't let me buy the house. It gives the option to pay 12,000 GOLD for a house, but he doesn't let you. And i'm pretty far into the Stormcloak questline.
