[WIP] A Bloody Harvest

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:08 pm

Hi there.

Welcome to the work in progress thread for my latest Mod! Thanks for dropping by.

If I had to describe this mod, I would have to put it in terms of other video games.

The Interactive environment I'd say its inspired mostly by, Harvest Moon and Monster Hunter. I've taken what I can so far from these games in terms of inspiration which has manifested itself in this mod as Fishing, Mining, Farming, logging and Animal tending.

The look of the game and the feel of the fighting, is inspired by Movies like Dawn of the dead and the Evil Dead trilogy. And video games like Left for dead and Silent Hill.

Its a completely new contained worldspace, meaning that you wont need anything from the Wasteland to get by here, but you will be able to take items between the 2 after the quests are fished.

As I said its a horror mod.. So let me set the scene a little.

You never knew your Mother, so you never knew her Family. She had a Brother, a Scientist, who left the Vault a long time before you were born. He joined up with the Enclave as a way to survive and help humanity, as he saw it.

They posted him to an abandoned Valley called Chiarria with his wife and daughter to investigate the phenomenon happening there.

Something about the valley was absorbing the surrounding fallout radiation and causing the formation of powerfully radioactive crystals.

Inside his small research facility there, the crystals were used in many many experiments to determine what power they held. Eventually leading to human experimentation in the field of Psyonics. That's as much as I'm saying about the story line. But its all planned out already and is progressing.

As you progress through the quest, you'll receive the items necessary to interact with the environment and create your own equipment. For instance, Mining for ore and melting it in the furnace creates iron for you. Mining for Sulfur and Potassium Nitrate and Coal allows you to use the mortar and pestle to grind them into gunpowder. You take the Iron and the gunpowder to the Ammo press and make bullets. This is your only source for ammo here in Chiarria. The bullets can also be tipped with various crystal found throughout mining to deal extra damage to the foes you encounter.

Fishing and farming, will be your only source of health here. With basic seeds and equipment being available at first to help you survive, and then later as progress through the quest, a fully fledged money making farm and house.

PROGRESS:

I've been working on this for 3 months and so far have produced over 300 new meshes and textures myself. The world space is almost finished, and I will be moving on to the dungeons soon. The farming, mining and fishing is all there, I just have to expand it a little.

Logging: Completed, But I'm making new models for trees, so that every tree in Chiarria will be loggable. Allowing you to collect wood in order to build additional structures and fortify your home against attack.

Farming: Its basically finished. So far I have Corn, strawberries, Apple trees and Orange trees. I'm going to expand with a greenhouse with Tomatoes and some potatoes also.
You till the land with the Hoe, plant the seed. The plants need water to grow provided by the sprinkler system. The produce drops when the plant matures allowing you to collect it, and either turn it into more seeds with the Robco seed maker 3000, eat it for health or sell it. When its grown, the corn is cut with the scythe and the stalks are taken to the Robco Baler 3000 to be turned into Hay bales to feed your livestock. I only have chickens so far, they lay eggs daily for you to eat or sell. There is a small change that you will get a fertilized egg, which must be incubated to hatch into another chicken. And there is an even smaller chance that you will get a golden egg, with greater sale value and healing. Thanks to Arkoola and the Beth community for help with the farming script.

Fishing: Its done as far as this Mod goes. 8 fish types. No trophies or anything in this one. Survival is your reward.

Mining: Finished, I just need to add more mining points around the world, and the various ores and chemicals that can be found there. So far there are about 10 materials that can be mined.

Weapons: So far there are 6 new weapons, Mostly farming related. An Axe, a Cleaver, a Chainsaw (needs to be reworked, i thought it was good until I saw the one just posted on the Nexus yesterday lol), a Hoe, a Pickaxe and a Rifle. The rifle is interesting. It will be one of only 3 guns available to you here. The other 2 will be a pistol and a shotgun. Each has several ammo types. You can fit a torch to any of them, but there is only 1 torch so pick your fave weapon (Supplied by Pelinors amazing Directional Pip light mod) It's very dark here at night and whilst dungeon crawling, you will need a torch! The Rifle can also be fitted with a Scope made from a relic found in the mines here. Which will allow you to see previously hidden objects and locations through image space modification. Each melee weapon is also capable of damaging destructible static objects (or which there are many). A new feature to Fallout.

Enemies: So far I have made 3 custom enemies with more planned. One is a giant nightmarish Teddy bear that stalks you, the other is a Feral Ghoul variant which provides the En mass bad guy. The final is a mysterious little girl. Thanks to Weijeisen for a shader effects tutorial on this these.

Armor: A few new clothing items, nothing special, Armour isn't prevalent here in Charria. Its more about environmental defense than personal. Also, who's afraid of anything when your wearing power armor?

I could go on describing everything in words, but your probably ready to see some images by now.

Ok, well like I said, I've been working on this for about 3 months. There if still a lot to do. I'm working on this by myself, so I cant give a definitive release date. Maybe January? Who knows. I'm not asking for help through this WIP, I don't really need it at this point. I just wanted to delay a WIP thread until I thought had anything worth showing.

Please feel free to add your thoughts, comments and suggestions and questions.

Take care all

Looking at the pictures, will this require Point Lookout?

Nope, there will be no requirement, everything is custom made and set in a new worldspace, and because of that there will be no incompatabilities with other mods either.

Thanks

I WANT THIS MOD!!

This is probably the most innovative mod for fallout 3 so far. One of the best I've ever seen. I love the flashlight on the guns. I wish that could've been included with weapon mod kits, but hell I'll take it with just three guns in this mod.

So this is going to basically be a crop growing and animal tending mod, plus resource gathering, then you have to fight ghouls and stuff by night?

Nice work. Damn, not nice. AMAZING work.

I don't know of any modern process that uses iron in the production of ammunition, except as a component of steel when it is used for shell casings. Lead, copper and brass are the most common materials used in making small arms ammunition. Cannonballs were made with iron, though.

Fair enough point BadPenney, thanks. I`ll add in Lead and Copper ore. The bullet press hasnt been scripted yet, just modelled and animated, so stuff like that can be changed easily.

Thanks for the compliments Andy and Ren.

Any suggestions of the crop types? To recap, I have Corn, Strawberries, Oranges, Apples. With Tomatoes and Potatoes planned.

@ Ren. You could download Pelinor`s Directional Pipboy Light from the Fo3Nexus? His needs FOSE for various great customisation options. Which have been removed from mine then the effect added to a weapon with a torch.

Thanks

I'm sold

me too. i wonder what the 13 others look like.

this mod will be pure unadvlterated epic win of awesomesauce. :D
the level of interactivity was begging to be implemented in FO3; you can take as long as you want with the fishing mod. i wants your mod nao. NAO! :P :D

nice work on the FO2 reference. ;)

for additional harvesting options how about carrots and/or onions?
or how about http://www.simpsonschannel.com/screenshots/shot375.gif? imho that would fit perfectly within this context. :D [i hope you know what i'm referencing with that...:) ]

if you ever need any pre-alpha/alpha/beta/... testers count me in. :D

cheers

Thanks guys.

I`ll remember your offer for Alpha testers Falcon. Homer`s Tomacco..... Tobacco and Tomato if i remeber correctly?

So you guys think a Still is a necessity? Okdokey then. I`ll make a `Still` shack out back. I didnt like the vanilla still, so I`ll make my own. I`m not calling it Moonshine though. This mod has more of an Irish feel to it than a Southern US. Chiarria is an old Irish name of particular importance to me. (+1 Kudos to anyone who works out why.)

I`ll go with Graqes as an added crop for wine making and eating, Potatoes for making Vodka, Schnapps and eating. Then I think we`ll need some Sugar cane too, for Rum. Carrots sound good too. Ill go with them also.

The other 13 are dead BTW. Number 14 is the only living survivor of the experiments. They would all look similar though, they are clones of sorts. I`m saying no more about the storyline! I almost wrote a small novel coming up with it so I dont want to ruin it with spoilers. lol

Take care

sweet. cant wait. but wait... i'm assuming you are using at least some DLC assets? i still don't have any of them. :( hopefully i'll have it by the time you are ready for beta. :)

yep you got it. started with a giant field planted with various seed.... and a mega-dose of plutonium. :D

surely not a necessity, but i think it adds to the overall ambiance of what you have created. :)
couldn't get the name reference off-hand though....maybe later :D

they're dead?!?! ack, you shouldn't have told us that either! :P i was fully expecting the children to stalk you, individually popping in and out until....

Nope, No DLC assets required period. It`s all new stuff with no incompatabilities with any other mod.

Sorry about the spoilers... No more I promise. But, just because they are dead doesnt mean they cant jump out and scare you.... it`s a horror mod after all *wink*

Chiarria is an old Irish translation of a more recent Irish name. My girlfriend`s name.

Hiya All.

So the fishing Mod is done with for now, I have a few things to do for a good friend, and then back to my Main mod.

I made a video of a short creepy sequence thats part of the quest. Most of them are something like this, some are better and longer but they contain spoilers so I cant show them.

There are some shadowing techniques in the video on the chain link fence on the left at the start of the video.

I didnt come up with this technique, and I cant remeber the post where I got the idea, but kudos to him/her because I liked the idea so I used it.

Heres an image of the shadowing effects you cant see on the video: http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/5646/screenshot485.jpg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvKMS2vj6CE

Enjoy!

Skykappa

EDit: Oops I almost forgot. I made a few new trees too! To add a bit more variety to the world space.

Ok.

Two things.

1: The look on my face when I saw screen #1 in OP is beyond words to be described

2: I used to sing praises for your high quality bottles. What you've done here is... absolutely incredible.

Thank you very much!

If anyone is interested in a release date, I think I`ll be able to do an alpha release fairly quickly Probably late Jan early Feb, originally, I was hopng for Christmas, but it seems a little optimistic at the moment as the fishing mod took a lot longer then I planned.

I`ve very few models left to make now, just a few more plants, then its mostly GECK or texture work from here on in so progress should be rapid! yay. I honestly cant wait to finish and let you guys all play it.

Take care
