Blurring The Lines

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:17 am

I never quite understood this.
On pretty much every single interview Richard Ham quotes..
"Blurring the lines between singleplayer and multiplayer."
How exactly, does this work? Could I please have a logical response to this matter?

Cheers guys,

JajaGun.

The multiplayer is the same as the Singleplayer Campaign. It's just whether your playing online or not if you play with people or bots.

What Epoch said. The idea is that you won't notice any difference between playing single player, online coop or multiplayer.

Yeah but what if you play online with 2 friends? Will the rest of the enemies be bots? How do you switch between single player and multiplayer? Do you have to quit back to the menu then choose multiplayer?
I am thinking that everything is in the ONE mode...but I don't know.

Sooo to go from Single player to multiplayer yes, you will how ever be able to go from single player to co-op with out quitting out i do believe. (your friends can jump into your game while you play single player) not sure if they just join you from a friends menu like in left for dead or if you have to invite them.

But what they mainly mean is that if your a strictly singleplayer gamer because you like story you will be fine going to multiplayer because its the exact same thing just with people instead of bots.

Hope that helps you.

Slightly. Then how do the 8v8 matches work? Is it Modern Warfare 2 style or whatever other game, how you just find an online competitive game?

okay i kno this is supposed to be line blurring
BUT just for fun lets say I wanna play something like team deathmatch
so i find a campaign mission with just a killing objective? so it'd be like all the guys have to do is get command posts and kill the other guys instead of doing bomb stuffetc...
the same for CTF etc..?
(p.s. dont flame me or w/e)

There will be stopwatch mode if I remember correctly.
Team deathmatch is not the way this game is meant to be played anyways. Maybe there will be some kind of mod on the PC to do this, but I doubt that there will be a TDM option for consoles.

Let me try and explain. There is campaign and freeplay, stopwatch mode is under freeplay I think. When you play campaign you choose Security or Resistance and play through exclusively on that side.

Say you start playing a game. It's you and 7 bots vs 8 bots. You can open a game so your buddy can drop in and now its coop. You can open it further if you want and boom multiplayer,

Does that make sense,

your playing singleplayer against bots, a pal comes online, he joins you, your doing co-op, some other pals join but your getting tired of fighting bots, you open your game for random people. voila your doing multiplayer.

Based on what we know of Brink so far, they should probably be playing a different game. Wish I had a better answer but this game seems so objective based I don't see how or why any deathmatch modes would make an appearance. Think about it- would resistance and security really just shoot each other mindlessly as they grapple for control of the island? No- they'd be intelligence about it and, thus, we have objectives.

I never played TF2 and never watched arena matches either. Could you explain how it worked there?

In arena, you spawn once as a class of your choice and fight. No respawns. After such an amount of time a capture point appears in the middle of the map.

i don't mean the respawn once thing
im just talking about how they'd play
even a koth map where they're just fighting for a point its still very team deathmatchy

My concern with this topic is this:

OK, so your an average gamer with a few (lets say 7 to complete an entire team) friends who are doing the game co-op. You decide to keep it interesting, so you and your team is going to go through the entire campaign in the multiplayer setting. You start the game and find some random people to play with, enough that there are no bots. Several sessions later you and your buds have leveled up, multiple times, but its been a challenge because the other players have not gone easy on you. Lets say your midway through the levels. The game has been our for a week and your doing average overall in terms of the player base's progression. Then one day you all decide to play a game and the entire enemy team is made up of a "clan" of 12yr olds who played the entire game in easy "offline" settings, where the bots are morons. They've beaten the campaign, are max level, and have all the upgrades they can handle, and proceed to mop the floor with your face over and over again effectively stopping your teams' progression. Idk about you all but this would seriously piss me off.

It doesn't work that way. You get the major upgrades/abilities early on and the more specific later. Besides, if you have been playing online and they with easy bots, then you will have more experience and you should be better. Splash Damage is still balancing everything, to make sure scenario's like yours won't take place.

Poor Nikto. ^^

Yes, and a lot of your earned XP points will probably go into customization. I don't know how new/better abilities will be unlocked, but I am sure that a max level character still doesn't have all abilities available.
You'll have to make a choice: Will I take general skills? Will I take class-specific skills? And how do I want these two to be balanced?

Well, there you have your answer. I have faith in SD when it comes to game balance.

i heard no character will ever have all abilities.
and it will require some thinking about what abilities to choose yes, wich is why i hope there will be a skill"tree" on the internet.
