Boats

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 4:27 pm

I think it would be great to see boats in Skyrim.

The Nordic setting lends itself very well to boats and aquatic transport. I would love to encounter a traveling merchant on a raft.

Anybody agree? Anybody hate boats?

Boats would also make the world come to life more. I think if possible they are a must.

I don't know why it would be bad. It would only add to the atmosphere of a real world. It won't hurt the world if they don't show up in the game but it won't hurt for them to exist either.

I hate boats and everything they float for.

But seriously, I'm sure there will probably be boats, with Skyrim being right next to the sea and with all the various rivers flowing through it.

I would love to see people floating down river on boats or rafts with stories and rumors. Maybe see a kid running away on a raft (perhaps an interesting Huckleberry Finn reference) where you can convince him to go back home, and then take him there, or kick his abusive father's ass and adopt him as an apprentice. I would love to see some Viking inspired boats as well. But I can live without them if they choose not to implement them, or have them purely as a minor aesthetic element.

For an "arctic" land, Skyrim seems to have a lot of waterways--judging by the map and city placement. At least 3 major cities and 4 towns are located on waterways, it would be a shame to not have boats moving around, even if you cant pilot them yourself (although, that would be a bit dissapointing).

Having boats/ships would be awesome. :goodjob: Also imagine having pirates/vikings raiding the coast and you have to fight them. And save the village they are raiding. :trophy:

maybe for a DB quest I can take someone out on the boat and drown them to death and dump their corpse in the water

There's some longboats in the Concept Art Vid (at Riften I think?).

I'm hoping for at least one boat quest like the 'Mutiny on the Bounty' type one in Oblivion, but a Viking adventure themed one.
Also, I hope they rock a bit more.

There will be many boats. However, they will all be fast traveling from place to place when you come across them and will therefore only be visible for a single frame at a time.

This made me lol!

But yeah, if they can do boats and make them fun/interesting then I'm all for it. If not, I won't be dissapointed

If Bethesda worked on the rules for "Mounted Combat" then it wouldn't be a stretch to make some of the smaller boats another form of transport similar to a horse, and thus, you could expect to have other boats full of your enemy sidling up beside you to try and attack you boat to boat. Arrows and such might, if they were of a large size and weight, provide the mass needed to throw you overboard when you were struck and should be accompanied by a large "whizz-thunk" so you can experience it your mind as you're flying through the air backwards into the water. People above you should be able to stick their sword or what have you down into the water and stick you a few times if you just float there like a buffoon. Or maybe they could sick their water pets on you, some pirahna or some other voracious water animal to pick you off.

Then there could be another entirely new facet to the TES world, open-sea adventures, fast travel on the water that gets "interrupted" by mercenaries or tribal warlords who hate you for invading "their" turf.

I'd love to see rafts, boats, and other such things, yes; however, only IF they are drawn to the style and nonperfection of that era, I wouldn't want anything too modern looking in Skyrim. I'm just saying... I'm just SAYIN ....

I'd like to see the ships (including docked vessels) roll with the waves when you are onboard. Adds a nice touch of realism.

People seem to be forgetting that boats were pesent in Morrowind and Oblivion. Of course they'll bein the game. Would be nice to see moving ones this time, though. There were some in the Riften concept art. Also, Solitude is described as a busy port.

You seem to have forgotten that boats in Morrowind and Oblivion were BORING. I'm talking about boats that move, boats that serve a purpose, boats that can be ridden, boats that are beautiful, boats that the NPCs use, boats that I can use, boats that sink, boats that have treasure, boats on the rivers, boats in the docks, boats at sea, boats I can own, boats I can build, boats I can sleep on, boats that travel, boats that are large, boats that are small, boats that are old, boats that are new, boats that are undead.

Boats would be fun, but I'm just wondering how realistic the enviroment is.
Because if the place is covered in snow, wouldn't the temperature be soo low that the water would be frozen?

Yeah, but people weren't talking about all that. They were mostly just saying "I think there will probably be boats" and "I would like to see boats".

EDIT: All of those boats you mentioned besides those you can build, use and those that travel were in Oblivion.

Oblivion boats were totally static. More like piles of wood than boats.

Would be great if you could hire yourself out as a guard to merchant ships that were suffering ambushes along the river. Or maybe as a quest, maybe.

Yeah, I just said they didn't move. Most of the things you listed did not require movement.

i would like to see this for no other reason than this was very difficult for modders to get in the game and even then it was still glitchy. they already said something about water physics which is vague but it leaves me with the impression that something like this would be easier to do than in oblivion.

oh..........and minecraft has it............i dont think that the smart hardworking employees at bethesda want to be shown up by some guy named notch...........do you bethesda people?
