Body part damage, like Fallout 3 and NV?

Post » Sat Nov 13, 2010 4:46 pm

Yes, i tried to search for a topic like this, with no results.

I am curious wether Bethesda plans to add in a system where specific body parts on a character can be injured, it has not been in past TES games but it is such an obvious thing and it added so much more depth to combat, i enjoyed melee combat in New Vegas more than i did in Oblivion. They did a great job of it and i dont see how it could hurt the gameplay in Skyrim, i dare say many people would miss the combat mechanic, it adds realism and gives you options and strategy beyond slashing madly at someone. Armour on specific body parts would also affect their vulnerability.

One of the things i found most annoying with fallout was a damaged limb. God I hate when a fot or a arm gets crippled in Fallout. If God really loves mankind there will be no crippled bodyparts in Skyrim.

However a blow to the head should couse more damage than a hit in your arm. Different damage for different bodyparts.

Awww I liked the crippling aspect! :P Having to limp home when I couldn't heal myself was a nice touch I thought.

Maybe you should play in easy mode instead of hardcoe then so your limbs regenerate, or plan out your attacks so you dont get hurt in the first place. Good planning in FO3 can avoid almost all damage.

All for it. Wished they had something like it in Oblivion even before Fallout was released.

Yeah i liked it so much i turned of my xbox and did something else... :banghead:

I still cant figure out why anyone would like such an annoying thing. It's just like i cant figure out why men wear their cellphones in their belt, when they could so easly fit their cellphone in their pocket near cm away.

If infact I am a dragon-born in Skyrim, sent from the Gods to save the world, but i get crippled buy a wolf....

Like i said, play in easy mode then so you either dont take limb damage or it regenerates over time. So your saying when fighting you dont care that hitting someone in the head does as much damage as hitting them in the foot? Or would you rather take the time to prepare and time your attacks, when their head is exposed etc. Or would you rather it just be a mindless click fest.

Not complaining about different damage for different bodyparts, its the part where your foot or arm gets crippled.

Edit: explained this in my first post.

For me, it made me fight more strategically, based on my character build. A tank could probably take more, but a more stealthy theif char. specialising in other stuff like charisma had to stay in ranged combat and avoid combat as much as possible - sniping being best. It also meant that I paid attention to my inventory, making sure I had stimpaks and doctor's bags. Exploring became more risky, and needed more preparation and thought invested in it (imo, obv.).
It also gave creating stimpaks and D.B.s a bit of an edge too, as you couldn't just munch on some food and get all healed up.

I hope they don't add it in and it doesn't look like they will from clips in the Video. It makes no sence seeing ass you can aim ur strikes and way. it dont wanna see this anyway

I guess it depends how spells work in Skyrim, and how the healing spells will work with a system that also alows limbs to be cippled. If a simple spellcast can fix my crippled arm I might be ok with it.

That's true - it might sway me to specialise in restoration spells, which I've never bothered to do before.

Like I just posted in the other thread on the same subject ish:

Well, if we consider the gameplay trailer for a moment, during the fight with the dragon the player strikes the head of the beast several times, and these strikes generate a believeable response from the dragon in that its head is knocked back/to the side. What can we conclude from this? Well, apparently they now have a system in place to recognise were the blow hits (which wasn't present in oblivion in any way iirc?), and I wouldn't say it's too much of a stretch to say that this means they also have localized damage. I mean, if they already have the mechanics done to recognize where the blow hits and produce corresponding reactions to it then adding that hitting different parts would do different amounts of damage should be a small task, and seeing as they have said this is something they have wanted to add in the past, it's a no-brainer really

What remains to be seen I guess is to what extent they will bring it, if it'll be like in FO that different body parts can suffer various status effects and have to be healed seperately, or if it'll be a more toned down approach with just some minor damage modifiers to different parts.

Hahahahaha, no, im not asking for VATS in Skyrim :lmao: Just that when you hit someone in the leg, you injure their leg, possibly draining/damaging their speed and agility. You injure their arm, you drain/damage their strength. Their head, you damage their intelligence/personality etc. either to a set amount, or to a percentage of their total.

Not necessary in my view to make Skyrim alot of fun, but I do suspect we will see something of this in Skyrim based on the trend in Fo3/FNV.

What I would Really enjoy is a "Gore Knob" in the config settings, so that we could choose between several settings to meet gamer and parental concerns. Perhaps something with 4 or 5 settings, everything from "No Gore" to "Bloody Mess" would appease all audiences. :)

They've already said it won't be a gory, "bloody mess" akin to Fallout, so that audience definitely won't be appeased. :P

I think they'll have limb damage. There was one part in the gameplay trailer where a skeleton gets hit in the head with an axe and gets it's head twisted backwards.

I saw that, i certainly hope they have limb damage, it would be a step back if they didn't.

I would always habitually aim for the head with a bow so hopefully body part damage is implemented.

That was used in FO3/NV because a similar system was in FO1 & 2. They included the "aimed shot" mechanic as a callback to other games in the series.

Fallout =/= Elder Scrolls. No reason for them to include that feature.
