Bodycount Director: First Priority Is Distancing From CoD

Post » Mon Dec 20, 2010 1:12 am

The success of Call of Duty series has made it a priority for other FPS games to distance themselves from it, Bodycount director Andy Wilson believes.

"I think the biggest thing in the FPS genre right now is trying to distance yourself from the hugely successful examples like Call Of Duty or Battlefield," he said after pointing out to various examples of games that avoid the “CoD route”, such as Epic's Bulletstorm and Bethesda's Brink.

"We've seen recent examples where it doesn't work out so well if you just try to copy that and go one better. Really it's about diversifying, and trying to find something that hasn't been done before, or something that hasn't been done really well, and just push for that."

“We seem to have been lumped in with Brink and Bulletstorm. Visually they're both very bright and poppy. They've also not gone down the COD route, so we're seeing more examples, I think, of developers trying to find their own space that's not Modern Warfare or Battlefield.”

"I would hope that when people actually get their hands on Bodycount they'll think, 'Yep, that's not really like anything else'," he concluded.

I know this has been discussed to death here, but, please keep this in mind when developing Crysis 3. =)

And plesea don't say this game,(Crysis), is better than CoD because it has a Nanosuit...

Also Bodycount looks butt ugly. If I was the old BLACK team I would go down to Codemasters now and smack so people in the face.

It's true that from what we have seen, many parts of the (multiplayer) portion of the game seem to resemble CoD.

But I think people need to stop comparing what is similiar to CoD and start thinking about what ISN'T similiar to CoD.

For instance, can you jump and iron man punch the ground, denting the ground in a game of search and destroy? No? Shame.

From what we've seen, the maps' sizes look fine. Are you trying to compare what we have seen to Shipment?

My point was not about Bodycount, it was about keeping away from CoD gameplay style.

I just don't want to keep playing the same game for years but with a difference name, "skin", and from a different developer.

I have MW2 for PC and am thinking of buying BO just for the zombie bit, but I ain't paying 60 bucks for it.
Just because a franchise it surprisingly doing very well, even though the hardcoe fans keep saying it's the same game with a different story and still buy it. (CoD-aholics :P)
Doesn't mean that now everybody has to keep copying it to be successful.

Just want the FPS genre to keep evolving and not stagnating.

Well the way I see it, Crysis to Crysis 2 is a big move.

Also remember, just because it has modules and killstreaks doesnt mean its a COD clone. Example: Look at Medal of Honor. A game that looked like Battlefield Bad Company 2 but played differently from BBC2 and MW2.

I agree, the CODs are getting stale. After being a avid fan, Black Ops was stale.

The 6vs 6 is another similarity, the "modules" is just another name for perks and killstreaks are killstreaks. Oh and the size of the multiplayer maps.

And yes, it is a big move, but, so far from what i've seen, is a bad one. IMO ofcourse...

Have you played the Mulitplayer Test?

Also you are infering that the rest of the maps are going to be the same size. To me the Rooftops is not that small of a map compared to Nuketown and others found in COD. Its likely the smallest map in the MP but the size of a medium sized MP map in MW2 or BO.

No, I have not played the multiplayer test. Nor own a X360 or even received the invite. lol

And that's why I said "so far from what i've seen". Plus, they said all the MP modes will be 6vs6, so i don't see any point on creating a map the size of Mesa or Beach.

i wonder how can a game were you just have to press E (knife) to kill half the ppl get a 100
anyway i still believe bc2 is only for those that know and like to play in team and that actually have brains for it

Heres an example. Hemmorage the Halo Reach map the size of something great holds great 4v4 let alone 6v6 matches.
