Bonewalkers. No. Please. No. Not in Skyrim.

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 1:20 am

As I said, I had bought the teleportation spells and was very well ready to venture forth to Punabi; I killed off everything in Punabi on level 3 or 4, difficulty set to 50. Of course I knew about Bonewalkers and such - and believe me, I do not want TES to be dumbed down, far from it - but I had forgot how quickly they drain the strength. Thus, I posted this thread for fun, mainly to come up with an entertaining discussion on the fact that Bonewalkers are so freaking annoying.

Lighten up, man!

I was not so much replying to your post, as to the tone of the thread.
A lot of people seem to be doing just what I described.

*lightens up*

That feels better :)

Yay!

Oh, sorry, I thought you were commenting on my original post. But yes, hehe, I understand what you mean. For example all the discussion on Cliff Racers. I mean, where would Morrowind be without the squeeky sound of those flying rats echoing in the wasteland hills? In my opinion, annoying aspects are good for the dynamics of the gameplay, because overcoming those aspects creates a relief and enjoyment for all the other aspects.

Yeah, nothing in the games that can actually cause you any problem, 'cause that's like, soooooooo annoying when you're not just the uber-hero unstoppable by anything, walking effortlessly over every foe you encounter!

Um...have y'all seen some of the complaints that the games are going downhill? Take a guess why some of us feel that way.

Oh people...Challenge?

Everything should be fair and square for everyone. No mounted combat,it'd be overpowered? Stronger enemies as I level up because I'd eventually become a god? Anything other than melee weapons should be nerfed in a way that you'd eventually HAVE TO use a sword?

For me,having such creatures you should know of their abilities and take precautions this or that way is much more of a challenge.(The ones above are even NOT)
Be forced to leave your loot a few times, and you'll know that you have to learn a restore strength spell or take some restore strength potions with you when it seems possible you'll encounter Bonewalkers.(Dungeon diving a tomb for example)
It's annoying in short term, but long term it adds variation. It'd be very linear if the only difference between the enemies was "attack, defence and element"

Things you can sound out on...
Bonewalkers...Annoying yes. But placed in the game to provide challenge for your character...
Cliffracers...Annoying Hell yes. But a simple mod took care of this for me...
Adoring Fan...Never really bothered with him, so I didn't find him annoying in the least...

The ONE thing you CANNOT complain about...
Caius Cosades' perfectly sculpted nipbles...No Sir! That will not Do!

Especially early on. Make them drain your attributes for a very long time (dispellable effect) sure, but NO permanent damaging that's so lame and player-hostile. Or at least make it much less common and something you can easily prevent if you plan ahead. But you can't prevent a random Bonewalker spawn. I simply HATE random stuff that punishes the player just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. When players are rewarded or punished, they should be able to think back and say "Yes, I deserved that. It makes sense."

We agree, good sir. :foodndrink:

while i usually agree with your stance.. having an enemy that can drain your strength down to 0 is not fun, not even in a challange sort of way imo.

I submit that removing all challenge from any game is even less fun. It turns it from an interesting activity into nothing more than playing with expensive, digital building blocks. And I stand by my belief that the removal of anything resembling any real challenge is why the games are becoming less and less fun, and that the people who advocate removal of such are directly to blame.

Next we'll have an outcry to remove those damned annoying attacks, because I mean really- even in a challenge sort of way, what fun is fighting an enemy that can drain your health down to 0, amirite?

Just don't make enemies that permanently damage your attributes = better game.

I agree 100% with that statement.

Bonewalkers were cool, unique creatures. I wouldn't mind seeing them make a return.

Greater Bonewalkers are the most annoying creatures ever seen in a TES game. Far worse than cliff racers, slaughterfish, Will-o-the-Wisps, or anything else you can think of.

Worse than W-o-Ws.. Please no... I did fight some bonewalkers that gave me deseases in MW while robbing a crypt.. Grr.

LOL, yes! I still remember the seething rage I had when I encountered the bugger for the very first time within some otherwise unremarkable ancestral tomb. Good times. But as soon as I learned that very fact (and how running around naked to the nearest temple wasn't terribly pleasant at all, considering how enthusiastic the folks of Vvardenfell to make fun of your state of undress,) I always try to remember to stock up on Restore Strength potions before any visit to ancestral tombs just in case (or later on I'll just enchant some petty accessories with attribute restoring spells while sporting a smug face while invading those tombs). But definitely they're not as consistently annoying as Cliff Racer, I think. I mean, as far as I can remember, they strictly spawned on ancestral tombs and nowhere else, so you should have expect such encounter anyway.

And that's the thing though: in the end it makes the game all the more memorable for it. You learn from the experience. Then the best of the reward is that you had this kind of privilege to pretend yourself as some kind of a seasoned veteran with a lot of helpful tips and trick to the uninitiated as you guiding your new-to-the-game pals venturing the wilderness of Vvardenfell :disguise:

I forgot Will-o-the-Wisps cuz I played Oblivion a tenth as much as I played Morrowind. [censored] those [censored]. All I remember about them was the ridiculously epic chases where I'd be booking it full speed in the direction of a city when I stumbled on them; they'd always be right on my tail owning me the whole time.

Cliff Racers - Annoying
Bone Walkers (all types) - Annoying
Will-o-wisps - Annoying

But I want em in game! :tes:

If not those exact types I would luv to see a Skyrim that makes you jump in your chair like DOOM III did for me. Creatures that jump out at you from a dark corner impenetrable by any source of light! YEAH! That's what I want! :bolt:

Annoying is not challenging it's... well, it's annoying.

Fighting enemies with cheap tactics is generally not fun.

It's settled, then. No more attacks, because cheap tactics like hitting you and making your hit points drop is annoying. :P

i thought bonewalkers were part of Dunmeri sacred necromancy? there's like no logical possibility of them being in Skyrim other than a throwback in a specific area or something (like if there's ancestral tombs on the Skyrim side of the Velothi Mountains, which would be fantastic).

the only enemy i've ever found particularly derp in Morrowind was the nix-hound, and mostly because the sound it made was annoying as hell.

on the other hand i do want Caius's nipbles to make a cameo. they were glorious.

I think Cliff Racers are far more annoying then any Bonewalkers. When I played I always have different restore attributes spells with me just in case, but Cliff Racers----oooohhh they attack from nowhere and have that high pitch screech and they always attack in numbers...I hate them :verymad: !

they should be added to the game and they should be a higher level than you and difficult to kill much like cazadores in new vegas.

It amazes me how people want any and all difficulty to be pulled from any game... Whether an enemy is annoying or not. Its like saying FPS AI should be nonexistent, where we have all of the enemies just stand in the middle of the room, foolishly wasting all their bullets...

How to kill a cliffracer 101: Use a lightning spell, or a lightning enchanted weapon.
How to kill a greater bonewalker 101: Use a DoT fire spell or use a fire enchanted weapon. Also, fortify your strength attribute or have a stock of restore strength potions.
How to kill a guar/nixhound 101: Poison.....
How to kill the adoring fan 101: Find a tall mountain. Push. Repeat.

I want enemies like this in games I play. It adds an element of strategy. If you wander upon these enemies and youre unprepared, you deserve to die. The wilderness is supposed to be unforgiving, not wave your sword hello and expect your enemy to crumble before you... Oh well... I guess after a long day of work, school, caring for my wife and son I want excitement... Not a stroll through the park...

If you ask me they need enemies that use entropy instead of brute force (and/or CC). Mixes up the gameplay. Of course it needs to be done very carefully.

if the theory that attributes have been removed from Skyrim is true

By the far reaching power of the nines, all sixteen daedric princes, and all that is good and holy in this world, why the *$@^ would they remove attributes? If attributes are gone, then Skyrim is done. I will NOT play it. WTF! This theory better be wrong!

In the recent interview Todd only explained leveling as "When you level up, you pick one of your main stats [health, magika, or fatigue] to increase, and then you pick a perk." He doesn't say anything about attribute increases. Whether they are omitted in official discussion or in the game is still completely speculative
