Bonewalkers. No. Please. No. Not in Skyrim.

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:05 pm

All right. I've started playing Morrowind and Oblivion again, and gonna do that until 11.11.11. It is fantastic.

There are annoying things in TES, for example Cliff Racers, Adoring Fan, Caius Cosades' nipbles and so forth. But nothing beats the annoyance of Greater Bonewalkers. I was in Punabi, doing a quest for the Mage Guild, enjoying the nostalgic feeling of playing Morrowind again, when a Conjurer summons a Greater Bonewalker. I managed to kill the bastards. But then I realized and recalled the horror and terror of the Bonewalkers; my strength was 0. In few hits that abomination had svcked my strength to absolutely nothing.

So I had to drop completely everything, even my clothes, and teleport to Balmora, walk from one alchemist to another to buy restore potions. This is early in the game, so imagine if I had been a warrior or if I hadn't bought the Mark and Recall spells, or Almvisi Intervention. Then I would have to run naked back to town. And it's quite a distance.

Therefore, I say, if Bonewalkers show up again in Skyrim, I'll scream a little, and curse as well, and then do everything in my power to wipe each and last one of them out of Nirn.

I didn't know that Caius Cosades nipbles were annoying?

I totally agree that Bonewalkers were way more annoying than Cliff Racers. :swear: But still I'd love to see them back in Skyrim, as long they can't steal all your strength.. :glare:

Edit: Imagine Cliff Racers who steal all your strength. I definitely hope the devs don't get smart ideas from this thread..

Greater Bonewalkers are the most annoying creatures ever seen in a TES game. Far worse than cliff racers, slaughterfish, Will-o-the-Wisps, or anything else you can think of.

In Oblivion I hated Will-o-wisps. I would sum times enounter them before I got a silver weapon, and I was toast, then I finally get a silver weapon and i can fight them, but its constantly casting drain health on me so I cant damage it and I end up dieing instead.

So....why are you concerned that bonewalkers will be in Skyrim, a province that is not Morrowind? Cyrodiil didn't have any (yeah, will-o-wisps, which were a chore to kill and were highly dangerous).

This is why in Morrowind, I've gotten into the habit of always having restore strength potions or spells with me, just in case. For most other attributes, I can get by with having them damaged long enough to return to the nearest temple or Imperial Cult shrine, but if your strength gets damaged, you can potentially become completely unable to move unless you drop all your equipment.

But no one said bonewalkers were in Skyrim and I'm guessing they won't be, as they seem to be limited to Morrowind, besides, if the theory that attributes have been removed from Skyrim is true, then we shouldn't have to worry about damage attribute spells even if bonewalkers did return, they'd have to cast other spells instead.

they should make buffs to be able to reflect that sort of thing (getting an attribute or skill drained)

Are they restricted to Morrowind? If there is a lore on that, phew.

But aren't they just like any other undead monster, such as skeletons and ghosts, and could be summoned/constructed to guard tombs anywhere in Tamriel?

Just don't make enemies that permanently damage your attributes = better game.

No, they're not any ol' undead. Bonewalkers are a dunmer thing. You really need to read the in-game books, for they are holy guardians to the dunmer. In short, you take a dead person, stick a bunch of spikes in them, and do some rituals. They're nothing more than specially made undead, created from the Temple using necromantic spells they consider holy because they're from the Temple. Hell, Nerevar became one, along with many lazy and good for nothing relatives (so that way they are useful in death).

And you played Morrowind? You do know there are books that do talk about bonewalkers.

While it's annoying if it happens too frequently, I did find it fun to have to sometimes put down all the equipment I rely on and make it back to civilization with minimal items.

Of course it would probably be much less fun with smarter AI NPCs that might pick through my pile of stuff before I get back to it.

Whilst their drain strength ability was a trifle annoying, at least it was genuinely frightening prospect having to fight them. Bring back the fear Bethesda. If that means giving us foes that can severely cripple our stats, then so be it!

Especially early on. Make them drain your attributes for a very long time (dispellable effect) sure, but NO permanent damaging that's so lame and player-hostile. Or at least make it much less common and something you can easily prevent if you plan ahead. But you can't prevent a random Bonewalker spawn. I simply HATE random stuff that punishes the player just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. When players are rewarded or punished, they should be able to think back and say "Yes, I deserved that. It makes sense."

Honestly, I can't agree, they inspired annoyance, yes, but not fear, I don't really find annoyance to be an extremely scary concept, just an unpleasant one, and the prospect of something unpleasant potentially happening isn't automatically scary, if that were the case, I'd be afraid to play my heavily modded game because it might crash.

Honestly, nothing in unmodded Morrowind, or Oblivion, for that matter, really scared me, and the reason is because neither of these games really captured the right atrmosphere to do real horror, and you need a good atmosphere to be scary, while an element of danger usually also helps, without the atmosphere, it just doesn't work, and I really don't find walking through a brightly lit hallway while the epic Morrowind theme plays very scary, even if a monster that can damage my attributes is standing at the end of it.

Ehm.

This is why you dont go to places like Punabi before you are ready?
You couldvewaited or used stealth, you could have prepared in a myriad of ways.

You shouldnt petition to remove a feature because you foolhardishly ignored every NPC's advice and loadscreen advices on dangerous areas. You shouldnt have gone there without a scroll of intervention (wich is easily gotten free of charge) or a potion. Even a cheap homemade one.

Morrowind has no horrible level scaling, so you have to think and prepare and strategise. Thats one reason why its such a great game.

Difficult monsters should remain in the game.

I dont like requests like these, where people petition do dumb down the awesomeness of elder scrolls because they treat it like a hack n slash, and foolishly just charge in.
Its not a hack n slash. I dont want it to become more like one.

Thanks for the info. Yes, played Morrowind several times through, and read many of the books. But there are, yeah, many of them, so I've not read all - but one day I will. This information must have slipped my sight.

Nonetheless, Bonewalkers are annoying. But they do drop soulgems - which is nice for a journeyman enchanter.

As I said, I had bought the teleportation spells and was very well ready to venture forth to Punabi; I killed off everything in Punabi on level 3 or 4, difficulty set to 50. Of course I knew about Bonewalkers and such - and believe me, I do not want TES to be dumbed down, far from it - but I had forgot how quickly they drain strength. Thus, I posted this thread for fun, mainly to come up with an entertaining discussion on the fact that Bonewalkers are so freaking annoying.

Lighten up, man!
