Book Collecting

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:18 am

In past Elder Scrolls games I have always tried to collect all the books in the game and create a library of books. Unfortunately though I have always had one big problem when it comes to book collecting....

I can NEVER put my books on the book shelves!?!?!

In oblivion it would take me hours to put books onto a shelve in my ingame house. And when I did finally get them in the right place, every time I entered my ingame house the books will magically fly off the shelves and onto the floor!! Lets just say I was not amused! :flame:

So will Skyrim support us book collectors and make it so we can easily setup items in our houses or will we have to spend hours putting one book onto a shelf? Discuss :D

Edit: Topic has been polled :D

This is a great idea. You should poll it.

I defintely share your concern. It'd be great if you could just approach a bookcase and set your books up on it through an interface, instead of using the tedious "grab".

:poke: Yea, I have to agree with you there. I always love bulding up collections of stuff in TES games. My rosewood manor has shelves of books, piles of welkynd stones, mountains of calipers (for M'aiq). And the physics would always mess it up. Like when you pick something off a table, the rest would bounce and fall over. It's alwasy really  when I walk in and some welkynd stones come flying at me.

Hell NO!...we shouldn't have an easier time fitting books and other items into shelves and onto table tops etc.

Part of the fun of Oblivion's item arrangement was how painstaking a process it was and how tricky it was to do well. For me, personally, there was always a sense of satisfaction to be had after hours of item placement; rolling bottles along walls to get them into an upright position; tilting books along the edges of chairs and tables so I could line them up for a precise placement into a tiny gap on the shelf.

Sorry, I know a lot of you will disagree, but as much as I hated Oblivion's system...I loved it even more.

One thing I would suggest though, is that they make the items more stable once they're in place.

Oh and just a tip to anyone who still plays Oblivion and hasn't figured out how to delicately and accurately insert books into lower shelves:

-the books will move smoother into the lower shelves the further away you are from the bookcase when you try to put the item in. So it's best to use a telekinesis spell for putting items on those lower shelves.

With so many books in these games, they really should do something to make their organization easier. They could learn something from the modders. In Morrowind, the mod Uvirith's Legacy has a library in it, where you give the books to the librarian and he places them on the shelves for you. Mori Estate has one like that too. There's one called Portable Library, where you place the books in a chest and they are automatically placed on the shelves. There's another one called Book Rotate, where you can change the facing of a book, so you can place it on the shelves yourself. I don't use mods for Oblivion, but I bet they have mods that do this kind of thing too. These things should really be incorporated into the normal game.

I hope it's better this time round. Killing trolls was easy peasy, but putting a book on a shelf filled me with dread every time... :P

Oh hell yeah!
I love books in TES and I read most of them.
I mean, since they put so much work in making books actually wort reading, why not make a easier way for collecting them?
Sure, you can put them in a big trunk and stuff, but that's just like putting your pet bunny in a toilet (everyone knows you put them in the oven and eat them ^^).
Having a books shelf that will make it easier for you to place books on it would be great indeed!

Not sure why anyone would not want this, and I am not sure why you needed a poll.

I hope we won't have that much of a problem with Skyrim this time.

The problem described has to do with the Havok physics reacting with the book models. With most small clutter items, the collision mesh (an invisible, simplistic shape that is roughly the same shape as the object) is what Havok reacts with - which is why things tend to float above things (because the collision mesh is a little bigger than the visible mesh in most clutter items).

BGS is using an upgraded/much-improved version of Havok this time - so my hope is that it will work better at remembering position and less "reactive" with player-placed items. Fallout 3 and New Vegas were alot better about this, so I have hope! :)

They could make a quest out of this. Someone thinks their books move around in the night and don't stay where they left them, so you get hired to stand guard and find out what's happening. What's a wizard library without a few poltergeists and cursed flying books?

I always loved collecting items in TES games. I would always try and get a full set of each armor and keep them all in one container in a house, or set up my display cases in Oblivion with anything I could fit in. Being able to put a glass helmet on a shelf with a bunch of books, or placing Baurus' sword on my mantle in Rosewood manor just looked cool and added flavor to the game. A more efficient way to get this done would be a godsend. The worst part has to be that when you finally did get them in place, they inevitably moved whenever you passed by (curse you game bump!),

Books and display cases should all be tweeked. Means less time wasting on pointless gameplay. Or why not have a manual and auto setting..

i agree i'm a huge book collector and would love to be able to put my books on shelves. I use to just stack them on a table or on my in game houses bed. Also kinda off topic i would love to be able to put your armor on a manakin, to show off your armor or wall hangings to show off your weapons.
