My book disappeared from it's case!

Hi.

I have Battlehorn Castle, and you know that display case when you first walk in, it's to the right? There's two, one to the left, one to the right.

I had the Tome of Unlife in the right one, which is as far as I know, a completely unique book. (If not, someone tell me).

I walked in just now and it's gone!
I cannae stand it! I love having unique items!

The only thing I can think of is I just bought the "bedroom" upgrade from the Merchant's Inn guy. But that upgrades a totally different cell and all my other display cases are fine.

I wonder if it could have glitched through a floor or something.
Would console-ing it back in be cheating?

Certainly not! You had it and lost it to a game glitch, so you are perfectly entitled to give yourself a new copy via the console.

Command: player.additem 3aa3 1

Technically it's 00003aa3, but for vanilla references, it's okay to truncate the leading 0s.

IIRC, the collision on that display case is wonky, and things can fall out of it, and into the floor. If you are considering consoling it back, you are playing on PC, in which case I can recommend mods like Decorator Assistant, which can lock items into place so they don't fall again.

The other possibility is that the maid nicked it, the way she nicked my copy of the Garridan's Tears book in my game. I had to pickpocket it back... <_<

The gardener bloke in the Vile Lair has a thing for books too. Some things tend to glitch out of existence, or some where you will never find them, as I found out when two Goblin Totems did a runner, talk about gutted.

Woah! Maybe that's it... but can NPC's actually open cases? It definitely wasn't open.

Now that I think of it, my maid is a racist, somewhat un-kind woman... Seriously! She speaks derogatorily of Dark Elves! I'll check her person.

Also thanks for the mod tip. I always think "I'll just play Vanilla" but then I hear of an awesome mod and tend to think "well, it's not actually CHANGING anything, just helping".

So, I'll consider it... I can't wait to use house-keeping or decorating mods.

Are there any that let you put books right side up in a bookshelf? I know Morrowind had one but it seems like it would be harder on OB because of the physics.

There are actually a few mods that handle book placement. I haven't tried all of them, as I've been using http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10561 for a long time, and am happy with it.

I can understand wanting to play an only lightly modded game, but I do recommend decoration mods nonetheless. I played the game for years on the 360 and never got the knack for manually arranging books, even with Telekinesis. It once took my character 30 game hours to arrange a single shelf.

Wait... 30 game hours? How long is that? I think it's 15 minutes per game hour? I don't know.

Anyway, thanks. I'm going to that link right now.

The normal timescale is 30:1, so 30 in-game hours are 1 "real" hour, unless you messed with it. Nevertheless, losing stuff is always annoying. I had a companion once who stole all my food from the tables after I had placed it there. Of course, he was fired immediadly... Mercenaries. :shakehead:

Mercenaries? Is that from a mod or is it in the game somewhere?
