[Movie] Book of Eli (Fallout if you didn't know better)

Post » Tue Jul 21, 2009 3:15 am

The movie The Book of Eli is a good movie with one heck of a minor twist which will change your opinion on what it takes to be a hero.

The scenery, some of the action, the need for finding water, the look of the world and just the way things are with what is civilization, make me think of Fallout 30 years after the bombs (war).

Love the genre. Hated that movie. Too much style over substance. I'm also not a big fan of religious mysticism, which was the driving force of the movie. If you're religious, you might like it though.

the movie was at best mediocre. It was nothing like the fallout universe we know. Cannibalism is like ... the LEAST scary thing about the universe. Add giant albino scorpions, giant flame-throwing ants, overly sensitive and slightly jaundiced mutants, slavers, rabid ghouls who can channel radiation, heavily armed factions that practice crucifiction (sp?), and oh yeah, vampire cults.

2 old people with the shakes hardly compare.

Who said anything about it being scary?

And who cares that it was religious beliefs that was the driving force. Hell, having a set, easy to understand, real reason for the main character to continue on his quest for 30 years, was a nice change of style compared to most movies.

It's not an action movie, even though there is some action.

Honestly, The movie played out very similar to Fallout 1 and 2, especially if the story takes place just after (30 yrs after) the war/bomb.

TAXman, reread what I posted, Fallout universe after the bomb/war not Fallout universe of the games. If you follow the Fallout universe, most mutants did not appear over night. Took a couple of generations, and 30 yrs is just barely a generation in that setting.

BraveRobot, don't get hung up over the religious part of the story background. Anything could have been easily used instead. Heck, you didnt even know it was religion until over 1/2 through the movie.

Again, IMHO, if you want to see a barren world, with limited food, water, few guns or vehicles, and the surviving people just starting to make towns, it is a good movie. Much different than the movie, The Road (of which the book was much better for story than the movie, but the movie drilled in the visuals of after the bomb.)

Well each to their own, I guess some just find fault in something and don't listen to others when they are attempting to point out some of the positives.

I think the writer of the movie actually cited Fallout as an inspiration but don't quote me on that since I can't seem to find the interview at this moment. I believe it was on Kotaku but I'll double check.

The Book of Eli was penned by Gary Whitta, former editor-in-chief of PC Gamer and PC Gamer UK. I believe on a past PC Gamer podcast he cited the Fallout games as a source of inspiration. He currently is linked to the upcomming Warcraft, Diablo, and Undying movies as well as a live action Akira.

There were a lot of things that bugged me about it. That was just one that stood out. I mentioned style over substance and that's something that really, really bothers me in any film. Things like slow motion, heavy filters, the fact that what's-his-name looked like he just stepped out of an Urban Outfitters store. And he had an ipod that he built himself? :/ Those are all obvious signs of pandering to an audience I don't identify with.

I do like the genre though. The Road, A Boy and His Dog, and Dr. Strangelove are all films centered around atomic holocaust and all are worth watching. And the Road Warrior of course.

visually, the book of eli (particularly the early scenes) took a lot from F3.... as F3 itself borrowed heavily from other sources: just take a watch through the opening scene of the japanese anime "Appleseed" sometime -- the first couple minutes, you'll swear you're looking at an in-game cutscene from F3 ;-)

but, honestly, all of these spring from a common well: pictures of bombed-out france and germany, post WW2.

The Book of Eli was ok for a post apocalyptic type movie, But i think "The Road" was better at setting the scene for what it would be like.

Oh, yes A Boy and His Dog is a cult classic and about Kansas too.

Now that is a good one.

When ever any asks me how Toto and Dorthy are doing, I usually reply

'Toto is doing fine, and Dorthy still has good taste.'

If I recall correctly (and I haven't seen the movie in years) at the end of the movie as Boy (a young Don Johnson of later fame from Miami Vice) was walking away into the sunset with Dog and dog said
"Well, you have to admit that she had good taste."

Won't spoil the actuall ending for the rest of you :)

Rate B, lots of refernce to horny young teens, radiation, lack of food and desert like conditions, with the location being in Kansas. Particluarly Lawrence, KS.

Blood: "You've not eaten a bite"
Vic: "I'm not hungry"
Blood: "I really appreciate this. Well, let's press on -- now, where where you. Oh, yeah, in the hospital"
Vic: "Oh Blood, come on."
Blood "You know, if you would have had your way with the blushing brides instead of hooking you up to a machine, you'd probably would have never come back up. (laughs and coughs) "
Vic: "Are you sure you had enough to eat?"
Blood: "Oh yeah. I'm satiated."
Vic: "What?"
Blood: "Nothing, I said I'm full, but after we walk all day, you'll probably have too cook up what's left."
Vic: "She said she loved me. Well, oh hell, it wasn't my fault she picked me to get all wet-brained over."
Blood: "Well, I'd say she certainly had marvellous judgement average if not particularly good taste. (laughs) particularly good taste."

Watched it again this week.

I think I figured out who Eli is in Fallout.

:)

The Msyterious Stranger trait. ;)

(Or one of the many Msyterious Strangers.)

The movie was just about his life and view point. And everyone else (in the movie) was just playing Fallout.

Ahh well I watched all those movies even some others up to 1000 since I crashed my rottentomato account...

And for me there was only one movie always reminding me of Fallout and vice versa "MAD MAX"

The world of that move was in my mind to barren to be an fun place for a fallout game.
Some of my complaints with fallout 3 was i never stayed long outside the D.C. area, i enjoy the post apocalyptic urban setting not only for the rareness of it but the diversity it brings to gameplay. But i feel the city was to straight lined no alternate routes or many buildings to go into. I think a little more enterable (lack of a better word) buildings would make the game more enjoyable in a sense that you wouldnt be so forced inot combat.
