Book For a Plane

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:51 pm

I'm in for a long flight tomorrow, then a long time waiting for flights to connect, then another long flight.

I was going to swing by the bookstore tomorrow before heading to the airport, and was wondering if anybody could give any good book recommendations. I'm into fantasy, sci-fi, action, stuff along those lines. But I've been really busy these days, so I'm not up on my literature, and haven't read that much- so chances are I probably haven't even read the big, well known titles.

Anyway, recommendations on stuff that is good, entertaining, and awesome would be appreciated. And it's okay if there are a series of books- I'll have to get something on the way back :D

But you put more detail in it and reading it aloud is gold. I applaud you.

Expendable, by James Alan Gardener is the best modern science fiction I've read in some time - although it's doubtful you'll find a copy in a book store. It's the first novel in a series (a loose series I believe) and I just got the rest of them in the mail - I'm looking forward to them :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Age_of_Misrule_(series) - A 3 book series about the Fomorians and the Tuatha Dé Danann (Irish Mythology) battling over the Earth and a group of special humans that must stop them from destroying everything. Its a fantastic series IMHO.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deathlands - A massive series about post apocalyptic survival, more than enough to get you through any flight.

The Day of the Triffids is a great easy SF read, if you haven't read it already. I'd say so is Fahrenheit 451 - or you could get yourself something like the Oxford Book of Science Fiction Stories by Tom Shippey; it's the size of a regular novel so good for travelling but if you don't like the story you can just skip to the next one.

No, I presume the OP was talking about a bit more plain plane.

Oh, I love the English language.

Robinson Crusoe, so you'll know exactly what to do when your plane crashes on a deserted island in the ocean. :hehe:

Or the Kingkiller Chronicle books if you haven't picked them up yet. Do do do do read them. The Name of The Wind and The Wise Man's Fear are excellent books.

edit: You can get out of the thread, Robbio, nothing is going to happen. I've been on the Internet long enough.

It was but a mere humourous observation. I intended for nothing to start. :)

Guns, Germs and Steel.

One of my fraternity brothers gave me a copy of that. Is it actually a good read? I may choose that one to read next, if so.

As for my recommendation, I'll say most Kurt Vonnegut stuff is really good. Try Slaughterhouse Five or Welcome to the Monkey House.

Its a good start for people that are keen on history but don't want to wade through academic texts on historiography.

Good rec on Vonnegut.

Well thank you all for your suggestions!

Any lingering thoughts, feel free to still post- I'm going to have to fly back in a bit.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to readily locate any of the suggestions that piqued my interest in this thread. But I did chance upon a copy of Starship Troopers, a book I've been meaning to actually acquire and read for a while now. And thanks to a hefty amount of cancellations, delays, repairs, and inclement weather, managed to almost finish it during the times I wasn't sleeping or staring off into space :D

Thanks again everybody!
