Books about generation ships?

Post » Sun Aug 15, 2010 1:10 am

I went to a science fiction discussion last night with some authors who were discussing how science fiction has affected current science and technology. It was really interesting and at one stage they mentioned FTL travel vs generation ships. One of the authors described a book he'd read set on a generation ship where most of the narrative took place in the corridors and at one stage they forgot they were even on a ship, sound familiar? He did mention the name but it was so quick I didn't catch it.

Has anyone heard of it? Or have suggestions for other generation ship stuff I may like to read?

Probably not what you're talking about, but Wikipedia has http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-Stop listed that deals with not realizing they are on a ship. However it's a bit more extreme than simply forgetting such. :P

Seems like a fascinating topic though. I'm going to have to read one of these books for sure.

I think Greg Bear had one in Eon. There is also mention of several in Peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn Trilogy.

Universe and Common Sense by Robert Heinlein also fits the bill.

Frank Herbert wrote one but I can't remember the name of it. The ship starts thinking it's a god, too, I believe. Or maybe that's later in the series, I don't know. I've never read them.

Sounds like Heinlein's 'Orphans of the Sky'. I think some of Larry Niven's stuff deals with generation ships, not sure if they are the main setting of any stories though.

Edit: Just realized electricRubber was referring to the same story, originally published in two parts.
