[WIP] Books of Vvardenfell: Volume 2.1

Post » Tue Jun 08, 2010 12:48 pm

I've nearly completed all the new books for the next version of Books of Vvardenfell, but I'd like some ideas for more books. Here is what I have done so far:

Currently Released Books:

- Alchemy for Beginners: pretty self explanatory. "Written by" Madame Mary Madrigal, an Altmer alchemist.
- The Complete Alchemists Compendium: as a single book and in a five volume set. Also by Madame Mary Madrigal.
- The Vvardenfell Flora Compendium: as a single volume and also a six volume set. By Madame Mary Madrigal.
- The Flora of Mournhold: single volume. By Madame Mary Madrigal.
- The Special Flora of Soltheim: single volume. By Madame Mary Madrigal.
- The Fauna of Vvardenfell: detailing some of the creatures of Morrowind. By Edras Oril.
- The Hunter's Guild to Soltheim: detailing the creatures in the Bloodmoon expansion. By Halgren the Hunter.
- A series of single page alchemy recipes by Madame Mary Madrigal.
- Alvo's Book of Blight Diseases: By Endthenal Alvo.
- Alvo's Book of Common Diseases: By Endthenal Alvo.
- Imperial Egg Mining: A Tract by Uther Orandus to the Imperial Empire.
- The Book of Lesser Daedra: A treatise by Omavyl Rhea of the Tribunal Temple.
- Verena's Guide to Enchanting: A skill book for enchanting by the Telvanni Verena Uvirith.
- Crude Jokes and Riddles: Collected and published by Crassius Curio.
- Crassius' Crude Limericks: Collected and published by Crassius Curio.
- Ol' Uncle Crassius' Collection of Bedtime Stories: A book of somewhat bawdy tales.
- Dibella's Whispers: A book of love poetry that is somewhat erotic in nature, but by no means crude. Written by the Breton Bard Deandre (actually written Jac from the PES forums).
- Common Jokes and Riddles: Another collection of jokes and riddles commonly told throughout Tamriel. Author(s) unknown.
- A Complete Traveler's Guide to Vvardenfell: A book detailing the regions and major cities of the island, written by an Imperial author named Orwil Endarr. This book is also available in a four volume set consisting of the Hlaalu, Telvanni, Redoran and Temple controled regions, as well as a book on general tips for the traveler.
- The Traveler's Guide to Vvardenfell: Another book in the series by Orwil Endarr containing useful tips for the traveler; Mentioned here separately because it contains some practical tips that the Complete Guide didn't have room to cover.
- The Tribunal Temple Tomb Registry: A book containing a list of ancestral tombs maintained by the Tribunal Temple.

New Books:

- Maps of Vvardenfell: A complete series of maps for every region, major city, travel routes, and expansions
- The Key to Dunmer Strongholds: by Folms Mirel, a complete treatise on Dunmer strongholds and propylon chambers.
- The Imperial Historical Society Handbook on the Excavation of Dwemer Ruins in Morrowind: pretty self explanatory.
- Bouyant Armiger's Survey of Daedric Shrines in Vvardenfell: in the form of a letter to Lord Vivec.
- Dangerous Places and How to Avoid Them! Volume VI: Vvardenfell, by Ansel the Craven Adventurer: The complete antithesis of an in-game guide. It's all about how not to die by being a total coward.
- A Mineralogical Survey of Vvardenfell: by the East Empire Company. A reference for all the gems and minerals found in the game.
- Cosmos, by Carlenus Saganus: a complete book on the cosmology of the Aurbis.
- The Armorer's Handbook: by Charles Alton Wayn. This book comes in three volumes for light, medium, and heavy armor. This book is about actual real-world techniques used to create armor, and not so real techniques for types not found in the real world. These books include illustrations of tools, chain mail patterns, and plate armor respectively.
- The Complete Blacksmith: by Charles Alton Wayn. This single volume is all about weapons. Eastern and western sword making, as well as how to make laminate bows, are just some of the techniques fully described in this book. Also includes a full color plate of a steel temperature diagram.
- The Book of Secrets: A book about secrets. Written by Jac, the in-game author is unknown.
- An Affair of Bards: by the Breton Bard Deandre. A romance book written by Jac.
- The Tale of the White Guar: an old Ashlander tale adapted by the Tribunal Temple.
- Pack Guars, Our Faithful Friends: a book about training guars by Llando Omavel, a simple Dunmer guar herder.
- A Traveller's Guide to Orcs: by Deandre. An entertaining view on Orc writen by Jac
- The Spirits of Vvardenfell: by Andren Belecosta. A book on all the local alcohols in Morrowind and how they're made.
- The Sayings of Tamriel: a book of collected sayings of the different races in Morrowind.
- The Most Colourful Insults of the Dunmer: a book of collected insults and witty retorts.

I love the Cosmos, by Carlenus Saganus - and in light of that, maybe you could take a stab at your version of On The Origin of Species (I think that would be most interesting to see). Of course, in the world of the Elder Scrolls, such a document would have to be highly controversial (not that it isn't still to this day in real life).

EDIT: Of course, you could always take a different than real world spin with such a book too, and use it to depict the creation stories of the world in a pseudo-scientific manner :)

Wow, that cosmology of Aurbis is amazing! I love that one.
What is the mod that adds all the books from Daggerfall and Arena and Oblivion? I think it makes the cumulative amount of books like, 300 or something. Any ways, what I was getting at was you could do retextures for the books that that mod adds. Someone help me out here with the name of that mod. It's almost 3am and my brain is exhausted.

But I would like to see more elaboration on that cosmology book. And you could use text from http://www.imperial-library.info/obscure_text/cosmology.shtml for the cosmology and stars and space and void. Maybe you could even get a little more insane and talk about unstars and the unvoid and unspace. haha no really, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1046640-the-serpent/page__view__findpost__p__15189197 is the best interpretation I've seen regarding "unstars".
Oh, and are you going to have them written by in-game authors? Like how all the books are?

I won't be doing any book retextures in this mod. This mod is for new books only. :)

The complete Cosmos was posted in the lore forums here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1092230-cosmos-by-calenus-saganus/ so you can get a preview of the whole thing. As mentioned in the OP, it's complete -- as complete as I could possibly make it. I mined all available lore, and I even included rare info like the Sunbirds. It was then peer reviewed by the lore buffs in that thread. Those screenshots are just test pics of the illustrations. The illustrations are actually spread out across the chapters. Actually, I think I'll link that in the OP.

I was also once thinking of doing The Ascent of Mer and Man, focusing mainly on their origins and then going into cultural evolution, but I'm still not sure that I want to do a history book. I'll keep it in mind though.

Well, if "The Ascent of Mer and Man" (Origin of Species spin) is not something you quite feel up to, some other general concepts that have popped into mind:

The Zombie Survival Guide, by Max Brooks: Published in 2003, a tongue-in-cheek survival manual dealing with the potentiality of a zombie attack. Its author, Max Brooks, lays out detailed plans for the average citizen to survive zombie uprisings of varying intensity. This could be spun into a very interesting guide idea written (more than likely) by some Dunmer (due to their cultural stigma to necromancy). The title spins for this could be many, too.

The Art and Science of Dumpster Diving, by John Hoffman: Furniture, clothing, building materials, tools, good food, even luxury items for free; handing run-ins with police; converting trash to treasures; selling found goods. I suppose this could be spun into some kind of Pawnbrokers Handguide of sorts.

I figure both of those could make potentially entertaining reads.

I like some of these ideas a lot, especially the guar and netch breeding ones. I don't think anyone in the thieves guild would be giving away their secrets in a book though. ;)

Hmm.. I never gave this a good look and I've been missing out. I'll try and make some suggestions. I hope my unawareness of your purpose of these books doesn't get in the way. Let's see.. all the books you have seem positive and don't seem to touch the darker side of things that necromancers and such might have. I will try to make them lore friendly and useful enough to appear in multiple locations if needed.

What about books like:

The Ascent Into Madness
(A book studying the affects of varying forms of madness, and their signs. Meant as a self help book to recognize and combat your own instability, but the author had limited success as he himself went mad)

Out In The Open
(A book that gives safety tips for traveling in the wilderness and how to make your trips to town the most effective)

Dealing With Orcs
(A book that details a short history on them and their tendencies. Told from the perspective of a traveler who studied them, and is meant to "better understand how to avoid getting an axe to the head." Also gives tips on how to gauge orcish intelligence from orc to orc and how to talk to them.)

Bones And Their Practical Use
(Details the importance of bones in the region and gives some examples. Also has some unintended usefulness for necromancers and summoning rituals.)

Bug Soup
(A cook book for those with an "acquired taste." Has text detailing how to prepare and eat several insects, as well as their components like scrib jelly.)

Breaking The Law Is Easy
(In this book, a smuggler laughs about how he got away with a large load of stolen goods and made a lot of money. Evidently he got enough money to become high class and found that as a noble he was able to break the law much easier than before. Gives minor tips on "spotting an opportunity.")

Dem Goodums
(written by an orc. Is full of simple speech and misspellings. Should be readable, but leave the reader wondering what this orc is actually talking about.)

For the record, these are just ideas. They have not yet been written, and I do not know if I have skill enough to write them, but I might try and write a few if needed.

You're right, of course. I just liked the title. :) Maybe the inside could just say something like "What? You really thought I'd write something like that down?"

lol, have stuff in it like:

Secret one.. you must find secrets on your own.

Secret two.. not all secrets should be discovered. Some remain hidden for a reason.

Secret three.. secrets come in many forms.

So in effect, it really is a book of secrets rather than a book revealing secrets, but is still handy cause it talks about secrets, so knowledge can still be gleaned in a sense. The book is secretive too. :ninja: Would prolly be better if renamed though, because then people will pick it up and get something different than they expect.

Maybe remove the name so the book is called "Big Book Of Little Secrets."

Maholix, if you try your hand at writing any of these please feel free. I welcome any original submissions. I can edit anything you decide to send my way. I wouldn't edit it to add proper spelling and grammar to something like the orc book though.

I already have a wilderness survival guide though in the Traveler's Guide to Vvardenfell, so Out in the Open would probably be redundant. The rest sound really good. It looks like you're well into writing the Secrets book as well. ;)

Possibly a bit late, but... Stuporstar, would you be intereseted in a new book mesh? I made it a while ago for something that never got finished, but I'd forgotten about it.

Here's the closed version in nifskope:
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w301/melian_vanye/MW/Cap1.jpg

There's an open version as well but I never did textures for the pages (it's uv-mapped and ready to go though). As you can see, it's just a basic kind of book, but smoother (more polys). The uvs are set up for ease of texturing rather than efficiency but I can always fix that if you want.

Anyway, if you want to take a look at the meshes just let me know. :)

Edit: Somehow got 'closed' and 'open' confused

That looks fantastic! It's a big improvement over the old folio and quarto meshes, which have that ugly poly/uv wrap on the spine. I would love to have a look at these. :)

If the UV maps are set up in a similar manner to the original book meshes, with back-spine-front all lined up so they smoothly transition, the textures should be very easy to convert.

I would have to test them with the book rotate scripting though. A new BR script might be required. I'm not quite sure how to go about writing one myself though.

What about a romance book? Or an advlt book, kinda like the karma sutra book. This obviously could only be uploaded to TesNexus and you would probably have to link to it from PES since you couldn't link to it from here.
But I like romance novels. Are you much of a romantic, Stuporstar?

OK, sent :)

I think the cover is similar enough, it shouldn't need too much modification to fit. When I was mapping it I wanted to just map the image straight on with no distortion, so it doesn't use all the texture area, but I could just scale the uvs to fit the texture area if you want.

Thanks Melian! I've used the new mesh to update the Guide to Vvardenfell books and they look so much better now.

I think Slof's version of the Pillow Book already has the kama sutra covered. Jac's book of poems are love poems, and slightly erotic, though not naughty. I'm afraid there's not much of a romantic left in me to write a short romantic novel. I'm more of a non-fiction writer myself (even when writing within a non-fictional world). I love writing reference books, but stories really aren't my strong suit.

Also, Jac has decided to write the Book of Secrets, and what he's shown me so far looks great. :)

Edit: completed a couple illustrations for the armor books. http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2995/armorillustrations.jpg

These are for the Armorer's Handbook, The Complete Blacksmith, The Book of Secrets, and An Affair of Bards.

An Affair of Bards is a new romance book by Jac, by the bard Deandre. :)

i would love to have the journal as physical book to carry and read, were the j button wont work unless you have your journal in your possession. advantage of having the journal as a book is having page art, but i dont know if books can be edited in game to add all the new bookmarks and such, however there was a book writing mod witch let you write your own books so i dont know. maybe having a book to carry that is just a misc item witch activates the journal when equipped and makes the j button not work when not in possession, we could have different book covers to chose from to reflect our own personality and the characters, and could buy different books to use, so we can fill a journal to a point and end the enterys and start using a new one turning the old one in to an actual book to put on your shelf for memories. kinda like archiving your adventures in volumes, just something to make the journal more fun and personal the way it should be . what do you guys think?

That's really not the purpose of this mod, and I'm not even sure it can be done. There is of course Journal Enhanced, which allows you to write your own journal, but that doesn't give you a physical book. You may have to make a new thread to get an answer to that particular question, on whether it can be done or not.

hmmm well for the sake of models and such you could make some journal orientated books to replace the ones already in game or even for additional if you more of a adder then a replacer even as a resource maybe so that it could be used for such a purpose in the future but thats all down to you it was only an idea thrown out there. i am loving this mod however, the maps simply amazing :)
