I don't want to have companions on my next play through so how can I get his gun early on?

I didn't think you could get his gun without cheating.

You can't have his specific rifle, but you can trick out a regular hunting rifle with a scope and other mods yourself. You can usually find hunting rifle mods at the Gun Runners and Crimson Caravan.

I read it some where before that it is possible through a trick.

I once made him hostile towards me by killing NCR personnel and then I killed him but the bloody rifle is literally stuck onto his cold dead hands, no matter what.

You wouldn't be able to use it anyway, for several reasons.

1: I'm not even sure it's marked as "playable".
2: It uses "MCA" or Magical companion ammo that you'll never see so you will have no ammo.

Actually, there is a trick that I've heard about and it doesn't require console commands :D (I haven't tested it myself, however)

Basically, all you have to do is go in a Casino with your companion and (of course) your weapons will be taken away. When you leave, you'll be given back your weapons AND his weapons.

How do I know this? http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Boone%27s_scoped_hunting_rifle "Bugs" section

I don't get it. A fully modded regular hunting rifle is better anyway. Just get one of those.

I got Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle. The best sniper rifle available. :) But after the latest patch, it might not be anymore. :(

Can anyone else confirm this?

Not according to the WIkia.

True but I need it silenced and that's not possible.

Best isnt Damage or DPS. Best is utility. Regular sniper rifle with silencer and carbonframe added, is best. Oh and dont forget Handloaded.
Ok some like a fully modded varmint rifle/Ratslayer but I dont know....

I always found the varmint rifle to be super weak and useless. I never even bothered to get the ratslayer. Plus, I never liked the look of the gun. They ruined the scope.

...or you can slap on a scope mod to a normal hunting rifle and have the exact same thing as it's already been pointed out.

The hunting rifle with all the mods looks sick though. I just thought Boone's rifle dealt more damage and I could get it early without having to wait to get the hunting rifle and then waiting to find all the mods for it.

You can actually get a hunting rifle before you even get Boone, there is one in a gun case in Novac guaranteed (Cliff's house), with some ammo. You may have to wait on the mods for them to appear on the leveled vendor lists, but they do show up not long after you would be leaving Novac/Boulder City anyways.

Thanks for the hint. I usually picked up my first one outside boulder city by the train. Everything about that gun is beautiful except for its AP cost.

Did no one pay attention to my post? Why do you want to get a rifle that you could never use?

If you were to read the rest of the posts you can see that we understand that.
Someone just stated that you can acquire it through a glitch, nothing about being able to use it.
Then we started talking about other rifles :)

But thank you for your post.

This.
The bug that has him starting out with 100 or over in Guns (instead of 50ish) is what makes him so powerful at low levels. That and he is (as are all companions) aim-bots.

I'm not sure in what way the op thinks Boone's rifle is supposed to be 'better' than the hunting rifle, but it's not. Or at least, not by much. Looking at the Geck, there are a few differences, however. The main one is that Boone's rifle has a much longer "max range." It's equivalent to the Sniper Rifle range (3548), whereas the Hunting Rifle is shorter (2000). Oh and supposedly Boone's has no "skill requirement" (no penalty). The DPS, base/modified shot time, base/modified reload time, all variations of DPS for defined situations (jammed, reload, etc) are all the same.

The other differences are:
Sight FOV (Boone's) 25 - (Hunting) 38
Sight Usage (Boone's) .1 - (Hunting) 1.5
Semi Auto Fire Delay Max (Boone's) .2 - (Hunting) .3

Note that I have no idea what things like "Sight Usage" means.... so maybe that's more important than I realize.

Good stats. Guess I was wrong. I just thought that If I were able to use it at earlier stages in the game, it would be a huge help since I can get it in the first 10 min of game play practically. I guess I will just go with the regular Hunting Rifle then.

You can get a hunting rifle pretty fast in the game at the Novac point. Just find Harland and shoot him in the face for his hunting rifle during "Come fly with me". Even get a good pile of starting ammo out of the deal.

I am so used to finding them all over the place in fallout 3. Thanks for this.
