Border Issues

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:58 pm

I like the idea of mountains that are not scalable for one part of the boarder. Obviously the ocean is to the north, so that provides a nice natural boarder.

My idea for the Morrowind side of Skyrim is to have a giant forest fire blocking the entrance. It could be magical by nature and impassable to even the mighty Dovakhiin. Also this would be an amazing place to add an expansion pack or DLC.

Invisible walls with message are fine. Simple, and to the point. But place them along "impassable terrain"/"natural borders" as much as possible, possibly also marked on the map so that I don't even have to consider trying.

The border crossings could be blocked by avalanches, land slides, volcanic eruption (lava flow), flash floods, huge rocks, wrecked settlement, massive streams, abandoned "tool booth", you get the picture - variation :)

And to stop those people who ruin the game by setting God-Mode, it could be a scripted death at a certain point, like in the Shivering Isles for Attacking Sheogorath or in MotherShip Zeta when you try to go back the other way during spacewalk. The Floating off into space cut-scene, but instead your character falling down from blasts of winds and dying if you make it too far.

God mode negates scripted deaths. Try it.

1. TGM
2. player.kill

The best way to do solid border-less borders would be the further you venture out, you would eventually pass out, waking up in the nearest inn and perhaps some old traveler saying how he found you on the ground nearly dead, then he walk off. IMO

You ever try to kill Sheogorath? Just tested it, no matter what his spell kills you, even in god mode. I also tried you Tgm and then kill. My character fell over dead. Also try that abyss trap. Scripted, and it is a good thing since there is no way up.
Just loaded Oblivion and tested all of these things in with God mode Enabled.

Seriously. You guys/gals need to get on pc. Quickly. With Oblivion, on pc, you can just turn borders off. It's fantastic for modders to put house mods, or, whatever just outside the normal borders. Scenery is still rendered, but, there are no creatures beyond the original game borders--unless a modder puts them there. In short, I hope they keep the borders the same as in Oblivion, with an option to turn them off via the configuration file. Problem solved.

I think it would be cool if there was like an endless forest (well, maybe about one game mile in depth) that just gets snowier and snowier...until you cant see anything in the blizzard and you just end up walking towards the light--back to the game world.

How about in an attempt to cross a border, the adoring fan runs up behind you and shanks the guts out of you with Umbra?

But in all seriousness, I like the idea of a magical barricade/wall of some sort. And doesn't look cheesy. And when you walk into it, it bounces you off and you fall on your [censored]. Also maybe Gandalf's voice saying "YOU..SHALL NOT..PASS!!"

They could just make the mountains be of an un-scalable height...

Around the border, obviously.

They tried that in Oblivion and people could walk into morrowind

Ummm... Not to put too-fine a point on it, but this is a Bethesda Game Studio's production, and the last 2 AAA-rated games from their shop did not impose the kind of crazy walls we saw in more recent productions.

That said, Todd did specifically say that the mountains add a huge sense of scale to the game because there are sheer-cliff walls (like in the trailer) that the player will not be able to scale (and yet look utterly realistic and immersive).

My hope is that we Won't be able to scale such sheer walls in Skyrim as we could in Oblivion (especially with horses). That went too-far the other direction IMHO, but I'm not the least concerned - this is a BGS game. :)

As soon as you cross the border, you are eaten by invincible cliff racers.

Maybe as you near the boarder, it warns you to turn back. Then, if you continue, a massive dragon flies by and roasts you dead in one pass.

Honestly, people always bring it up, but I just think sticking with borders would be better. Everything else would seem ridiculous.

Why is everything outside of Skyrim in eternal blizzard?

Why are they so intent on blocking anyone from leaving Skyrim. Don't they have any interprovincial trade?

Why are there huge mountains that are unclimbable surrounding the entire province? How did people get in and out and this doesn't seem like a natural thing to form in the world.

And so on. The invisible wall works perfectly and doesn't have an issue with lore. It just tells you that you can't leave Skyrim and it's because of no ridiculous and unbelievable natural phenomenon or law, it's just how it is for the game. And that's fine. And saves a lot of work for nothing.

While I'm perfectly fine with invisible borders, you can drudge up explanations for most of the methods mentioned above.

Maybe the blizzards are the result of Skyrim experiencing an extremely harsh winter. Maybe the borders are being locked by the Imperial Legion/other provincial forces in order to try and prevent civil dissenters from spreading.
The unclimbable mountains obviously wouldn't work, of course.

I really don't see the reason why invisible walls shouldn't be used though. The game is set in Skyrim. Its up there in the title. If you're trying to cross the border the whole "it breaks immersion" argument doesn't cut it, because you know when you buy the game that you can't travel all over Tamriel.

I proposed in the othe OTHER thread like this one last month several ideas, I guess I'll repost them again for the new crowd, hahaha:

1. Lycanthropic Traps .... there is a plague of were-beasts befalling borders regions and many traps have been dug warning you of these pits. You can't see them, but you can fall into them. There are tons of them, and they are deep, filled with spikes. You fall, you die. If you get through the minefiield of traps, then a pack of werewolves get you. Game over. Hey, you were warned!

2. Hungry Giants .... they patrol the borders looking for fresh meat. They are very big. When they catch you, they pick you up and shove you into their dank, smelly mouths, there is blackness, and a crunch. Game over.

3. Border Guards ... they arrive (like 20 of them) and each one fills you full of arrows non stop until you die. Game over.

4. Terrible Storms ... they slowly explode from nowhere, raining so hard you can't see in front of your face, or in the colder areas, snowing like a blizzard. The blizzard drives all of the wild animals in the area crazy, and as one they stampede through your area, knocking you over and trampling you to death. Game over.

5. A Magical Curse ... surrounds Skyrim. Those leaving the borders without clearance from a central authority and a magical seal permitting you to do so are teleported at random back into Skyrim. If you wander too far out, you will begin to get messages about "you feel a mystical buzzing warning you to turn around and abandon this path." If it's ignored, a flash of magical energy surrounds you, and you are thrown back at some random location within Skyrim. Totally random. You could end up all the way across Skyrim .... you never know.

how about it just teleports back a few feet (without any magic suggestion) it would appear that you have been travelling for ages but when you turn around you are in the same place

Now this I like.

Why not visible walls that are so high that you can cross them only using cheats?

I think that it should just be un-scalable mountains around the border. Makes the most sense imo.

I have seen the argument :' I would rather the devs spent their time on something more important', a fair few times, and it isn't always a valid point, but I think this is the perfect time to bring it up.

Why not a large wall with gates for the other provinces that we can't use? Then there is still a clear end to the world map and modders could just make the gate take you to where they want to put whatever it is they're modding in.

The main problem with this is that the northern edge of the map is in the sea.

I hadn't forgotten that I just didn't mention it because I couldn't think of a solution, maybe endless see, or drowning if you go too far would work.
