Border Issues

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 3:23 pm

Don't really know if this was talked about, but I didn't like the simple invisible wall that was implimented in Oblivion, some games like Borderlands would have embedded turrets with laser pointers train on you and the nearest turret would scream an automated message about if you continue you will die. If you played the first Mercenaires game, flying out of bounds would end with an ACP pwning you. But in Oblivion, you would hit an invisible wall and recieve the message "You cannot go anyfurther, turn back."

Now of course I'm not suggesting that we should put auto turrets or ACP squadrens into Skyrim, that would be just stupid. But it would be nice if SOMETHING better than an invisible wall is what keeps you from ventruing into Cyrodiil, Morrowind, High Rock or Hammerfell.

My plan would be something like the Mercs 1 idea, just more TES frendly: There would be 3 or 4 cells of wilderness, and once you enter the first cell, the game warns you that "Skyrim will not allow illegal border crossing, turn back or the guards will hunt you down." If you don't turn around (either a timer reaches 0 or you go into the next cell) 4 rangers with a LOT of health and very powerful weapons (not meant for the player to have) will spawn and kill you.

Anyone else got an idea?

They could just make the mountains be of an un-scalable height...

Around the border, obviously.

IMO it worked fine in Oblivion. Plus 4 extremely powerfull rangers would not make a lot of sense in late game. If you, the mighty Dovakhiin and last hope of Skyrim and the entire world, is slaughtered by a couple of border guards THAT would break the immersion. It is a game so you will know beforehand that it has it limits. Devs should spend their time on other things some kind "turn-back" warning will be fine.

Ehh... that is better than the invisible wall, but not by much. If it doen't feel as futile as arguing on the internet (pime taradox), then it feels like it could have had more done to it.

I say this all the time about things like children, but that got put into the game.

How about blizzards that damage heavier the farther you go out?

how about it just teleports back a few feet (without any magic suggestion) it would appear that you have been travelling for ages but when you turn around you are in the same place

I'm fine with magical boundaries, just as long as they stay on the border, and don't venture in-land as they did in New Vegas.

Children holds a lot more potential. Quests involving children in all sorts of sweet/nasty/etc. ways. You could potentially be sat in a morality vs greed dilemma. If the game have a working reputation system quest involving children could possibly really help to define your character. Further you will be spending more time in towns than trying to cross the border so I rather have the developers focus on immersion there. As long as the basic gameplay is good you of course want as many details as possible in regard to immersion. I just think that the border-thing should be prioritized very low as I do not see much of an immersion breaking issue (if the devs just place the dungeons a little wise).

The idea has merit, but considering the fact that you could still continue in a straight line given those conditions you'd come across the same map issue that Morrowind had if you tried to break its borders. Oblivion worked fine for me as well.

Eventually the damage would ramp up to a hard kill barrier.

And to stop those people who ruin the game by setting God-Mode, it could be a scripted death at a certain point, like in the Shivering Isles for Attacking Sheogorath or in MotherShip Zeta when you try to go back the other way during spacewalk. The Floating off into space cut-scene, but instead your character falling down from blasts of winds and dying if you make it too far.

I hate invisible walls. I hate them even more now because of New Vegas. Invisible walls in the gaming world? WTF?!! Ok, it was fine in Oblivion, I accepted it, but then in Fallout 3? Then in New Vegas?

I just hope Bethesda is better than Obisidian in making impassible terrian. Too many times, I tried to climb a high mountian I couldn't because it was too high. Low and behold, I get excited I found a montian or hill or ridge, I should be able to climb/jump over, and I can't because of an Invisible wall.

All I know is I will loose so much respect for Bethesda if we have invisible walls in Skyrim. You telling me Todd and company don't have any imagination to do something else? If anything, have a blizzard as was suggested, or have rocks falling off crushing your, or, have a 1000 cliff races in thier nest. You cross the boundries, you get attacked by cliff racers non stop untill you die. Since most people hate cliff racers, I will bet they will not venture futher any more.

Even with God mode on the PC, the Cliff Racers can kill you OR they keep coming and coming non stop, wher eyou can have like a 1000 you have to deal with. Eventually the player will quit. :)

I was so disapointed that they didn't do this in Fallout 3. The further you ventured out, the more radiation poisoning you got and would eventually die. With all the great ideas Bethesda has, they should come up with something besides, an invisible wall and "You can't venture further, Please turn back".

They can also have the endless sea they had in Morrowind and if trying to go to the other provinces, they have the endless Mountians that never ever end.

What about a 10 second warning and then some form of catapult attack on you with flaming munition?
Or a large volley of arrows like in 300.

I also like the idea of just having un-scalable mountains around the border. It is a mountainous area, so they are easily explainable, while they dont interrupt immersion by having out-of-the-ordinary instances occur, such as incredibly difficult encounters and such.

I like the blizzard thing. It's similar to far cry 2, where you went unconscious due to heat stroke if you went out of bounds and had to be rescued by a buddy.

Unscalable mountains is probably what you are going to get in this game.

How about this.

You get to the borders and there's some sort of river or lakem and it's frozen over. If you walk out too far the ice starts to crack, and if you proceed you fall through and die. You'd get more of a warning of course, a message popping up telling you to turn around or die.

The only problem with this idea, (and the blizzard idea) is that southern Skyrim in the game doesn't have snow. I'm assuming the game takes place in one season, and that season is Spring or Summer. There won't be snow in southern Skyrim or ice.

Sooooooooooooo.... Any new ideas?

Southern skyrim is a range of ridiculously tall mountains. Which means there couldn't be a river border and there would be a lot of blizzards.

I already said this before, but natural barriers (besides mountains, which get really boring) would work fine

-Freezing lakes (hypothermia)
-A Large wall with a gate that collapsed onto itself or was blocked by rubble during the civil war
-Guards from either civil war faction that won't let you out due to paranoia etc.
-Large rapids
-Huge cliffs like in the trailer
-An army of adoring fans that won't let you past by forming a giant wall of annoyingness (jk)
-Really thick forests
-A huge blizzard that slowly drains your health the further you go into it (already mentioned but I said it first in another thread :meh: )

This is my idea:
A msg will apear turn back: you have 10 seconds to turn back: if you didn't follow the orders you would

Senario 1: (in a blizzard)
if you didn't follow the orders you would go into a 1st/3rd person view of your character being carried away after you froze to death in the storm. you would either end up in the nearest city in a hospital (or an inn) or you would be in a cage with some bandits that captured you as a slave. You could bribe them, kill them, sneak out of your cage, and then take your stuff

Senario 2: (near a town or the forrest)
if you didn't follow the orders you would find yourself being carried away by two guards as being a run away. You would then find your self in jail. you could either serve your sentence or escape..

Senario 3: (the ocean)
if you didn't follow the orders you would start to freeze until you died, you would find yourself laying on the beach or harbor nearly dead.

Senario 4: (the mountains)
The top parts are to steep for you to climb, (no invisible walls)

Senario 5: (idk)
you tell me
edit: this would all similar to farcrys 2 system btw

A lot of these ideas sound like something out of "The Truman Show" - which is actually appropriate, given the circumstances.

Frankly, I like the idea of impassable terrain - followed by blizzards for the foolhardy and determined. It's a lot better than some games, where you get ten seconds, and then die.
