There are a number of other bookstores near me, considering I live in a city, but I'm still sad to see my local Borders is closing. It's a sign of the times, I suppose. I dislike e-books as much as I dislike digitally distributed games (I like being able to hold what I paid for in my hand), and this is an unpleasant reminder of what the future will be like. But how do you feel about this news?

And in Australia, Angus and Robertson too (I don't know if you guys have them) - they're owned by the same company. That pretty much gives Dymocks a monopoly, not counting the Internet, and smaller book stores, so they should be happy.

Let me assume that the local bookstores were closing down (since I've never heard of Borders). I wouldn't really be affected because the few times I buy books it's from e-bay or amazon.

My hometown had a Borders but I think it closed down a while ago. I get all my books from Amazon or on the Kindle iPod app anyway.

That's pretty much the reason the bookshops are going. Over here in the UK, Borders was pretty much the last rival to the Waterstones/HMV giant, and their future is pretty shaky too.

I think it would be a shame for high street bookshops to go, they smell better than the internet.

Didn't know that about A&R. I'm curious as to how much of an effect this has on the Australian stores -- the convolutions of corporations can cause interesting complications (sorry, the alliteration took over there :hehe:).

I'm not too bothered if they close up shop; in my experience, they're overpriced. Even for Australia. If I need a book straight away, there are other businesses I can (and prefer to) hand my money to. If I can wait a week or two, I buy from The Book Depository (based in the UK, they're an online retailer with low prices and a bunch of reasons for me to like 'em ).

I'm kinda sad about this. It means that ebooks, while convenient, are taking over. Also, I was proposed to in my local Borders, but that one isn't being closed down yet. Neither is this huge one in Miami I would frequent when I lived there. Of course, I love both Barnes & Noble and Borders equally, but the Borders here feels more welcoming. Barnes & Noble always seems to have better sales, though. Just not on anything I came in looking for. I'll go into the store and look at the book, but ultimately get it from Goodwill or one of Barnes & Noble's online sellers.

But yeah, I'm also glad to see the one in Wellington remaining open, unless Borders forgot they have international stores. It was always horrendously priced.

I've never heard of Borders. I seem to buy everything from Blackwell's or Amazon now.

I buy most of my books online from Amazon or Waterstones. The only time I really go to an actual shop is for this little place in Stamford - it's like a maze, books reaching way over your head, piles on the floor etc. and a section with very rare, expensive or antique books in glass cases. I like to look at those because most are beautiful, although there's no way I could afford them. The normal section just has stuff that doesn't get sold in normal shops because they're old and a bit worn/manky, secondhand or otherwise out of print (don't go there expecting the latest bestseller). If it's not as interesting as that shop (wish I could remember the name!) I'll just browse books in the comfort of my own home.

I don't remember the last time I was in a Borders. If I go to a bookstore it's either local or a Barnes&Nobel.

I'm not surprised by this news. When you have stores like Walmart and Target that can also sell the book and other things as well, it's only a matter of time before Borders goes out.

I know of three in my area. One is close to a Barnes and Noble. Never understood why they would do that. I can understand why the closings are happening though. I haven't bought a physical copy of a book in years. Digital books are just too convenient.

I don't live near a Borders now, but when I lived in Monterey I frequented the one there a lot. Great selection of books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, national newspapers, etc... People seem to hate chain bookstores and want "independents", but I never saw a small "mom and pop" bookstore that could match Borders or Barnes and Noble for selection.

There are still many titles without ebook formats. No I don't think ebooks are going to pose threat to real books, not anytime soon. Newspaper however had been under transformation to its electronic counterparts for quite a few years already. Simply because nobody keep old newspapers, so electronic news is more economical and tidy. Asian countries still don't trust electronic transactions, book stores will remain the main source of knowledge for the next ten years.

Even the one that's close to me is closing and it got quite a bit of business. Also, the one in Santana Row in San Jose got closed down which is really surprising.

I guess I'll have to hurry up and go spend the gift card I got :(

This has me honestly concerned for the future of books. I don't want the events of Fahrenheit 451 to happen in my lifetime.

I'm also one of those people that need the copy of a book to be in my hand.

We have a Barnes and Nobel rather than a Borders but it's been over a year since I picked up more than a paperback or a magazine there - it's cheaper and easier to purchase through Amazon and have it shipped.
