Borders of Skyrim.

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:40 am

Since Skyrim borders with Cirodiil, Morrowind, and Hammer fell well we be able to se over the border?

Once mods have removed the invisible walls, will we be able to make out the valus mountains of Cirodiil or other nearby landmarks of the other provinces?

Will the land past the border of Morrowind have the shape of the mainland and perhaps the island of Vvardenfell?

Or will it all be flat?

Note that There was quaite a LOT of land past the borders of Cirodiil in Oblivion and a few mods were made to recreate those nearby provinces.

I expect it will be exactly like Oblivion, less detailed land going out as far as you can see but not much further, just to create scenery. There will be no major noticeable landmarks I expect.

Those mods had to make new heightmaps though, that wasn't in the game by default.

It would seem to make sense to be able to see the landmass beyond the borders to me, at least as far as the game's view distance allows, after all, Skyrim is not floating in some void, it's a part of a continent in which other lands exist, it's just that they are not open for you to explore in the game. Now, I'm guessing we won't see towns, ruins, or any other noticable landmarks beyond the borders, but we should still be able to see the terrain, much like in Oblivion. Though I hope that this time, we can actually see the roads leading into other provinces, even if we can't follow them, it always struck me s odd that the central province of the Empire did not have one road connecting it to other provinces.

I think the real question is, how will the game keep you from going beyond the borders? Is it just invisible walls again? Or has Bethesda surrounded the entire province with physical barriers of some form, whether mountains too high and steep to climb or something else? I guess we'll see.

how awesome would it be on top of a mountain, near the borders of Morrowind, and see the Red Mountain, or Dagoth Ur

Actually, around 100 years before Skyrim is set, Red Mountain erupts in a catastrophic natural disaster and Vvardenfell is completely destroyed. It would be unlikely that you would see much over the border. Only the mainland of Morrowind itself.

I'm sure it is still there in some form, just had the top blown off.

Cross the borders? Remember what Todd Howard said at the interview about the dragons?:
The games starts with you being led to your execution. You are kinda caught coming over the Border of Skyrim,We Don't really say why.

Doesn't mean it has to start with you completely over the borders. It may even be nowhere near it and just start with you in shackles being taken away, them saying "Hey, we caught this guy trying to cross the border" or whatever.

Even if the Nerevarine hadn't killed him and Vvardenfell hadn't blown up it is unlikely you would be able to see Dagoth Ur from such a distance.

Only Vvardenfell. Not Morrowind as a whole. Places like Solstheim and Mournhold would have likely survived.

Red Mountain is sometimes called Dagoth Ur. At least in Arena it was.

The Dwemer ruin located in the crater is called Dagoth Ur, not just the guy. And I doubt there wouldn't be any remains you could see, Vvardenfell wasn't completely destroyed.

"In Vivec's absence, the Ministry of Truth becomes unstable. Vuhon creates an Ingenium that uses at first dozens of dying souls, then a small number of living ones to stabilize the rock. The soul of Sul's wife Ilzheven was among them. In a fight to free her, the Ingenium is destroyed and the rock crashes into Vivec with all the energy it originally had. The impact causes Red Mountain to erupt and destroys the entire island of Vvardenfell, as well as causing massive destruction to the rest of the province."

I actually hope they add a few landmarks this time around. It'd be absolutely amazing to see Dive Rock again with the new engine, or seeing the walls of Bruma and White Gold Tower from the Valus mountains. This wouldn't really require much effort in itself would it? Just remake the general sloping geography of northernmost Cyrodil, copy/paste some Oblivion textures and voila :) It'd do wonders for nostalgia to be sure.
