Alright, first things first, forget most of what you know about the last few chapters that I wrote about this story, except the basic stuff like how I got the holotape from my dad and he told me everything the enclave told me was a lie, and that Amata helped me escape, blah blah blah. Now, I am going to be more serious, I kinda got the hang of it now. I switched the viewpoint to first person. I also forgot to mention when I started this that this Fanfic is a twisted main plot story, but it takes place 23 years before the games timeline but most of the quests are the same give or take a few points, so some characters are different, or not there at all.
--Chapter 1--
----Thoughts--
I looked out the window of the vertibird. Bleakness. There was nothing to see except for burned out buildings and scorched deserts, the dark trees did nothing to make it seem more alive.
"Maybe the Enclave had been right, maybe there is no life out here after all."
"I can't think things like that, they'll make the rest of the trip worse." But where was the rest of the trip going? I had been sitting in the cramped quarters of the air transport for so long, I began to wonder if there was any food. "There's gotta be something to eat around here..."
Although I had been trained to avoid the negative effects of not eating for long periods of time, I felt hungry. I couldn't sleep because I had that cup of coffee this morning, and the beds in the rear weren't very comfortable anyways. The radar was picking up movement. The distinct beeping noise had been set to an obnoxious pitch, making it so irritable, it was hard to ignore. I rushed up to it and saw something out the window of the cockpit, "A town?"
A town it was, a small settlement by the looks of it, built into the crater of a bomb, which was still sitting in the center of it?! These people had to be mad! They could have noticed it, but by the looks of it, there were several people around it, one was waving his arms. I looked down onto the dashboard, the fuel gauge was below the slash under the "E" on the full and empty bar. "Oh, [censored]!" I hadn't been very lucky this week...
I got out of the chair and noticed the humming of the proppellers had stopped, the aircraft shook.
I fell back onto the hard steel flooring and my vision went black.
--Chapter 2--
----The Arrival--
My head was pounding, my leg felt wrong, my spine wasn't much better, and my face burned, but somehow, I managed to open my eyes and lift my head. I was in some sort of infirmiry, on a matress with a rusty frame. Other people were laying on similar beds, but they did not appear to be moving. A Caucasian man was standing over one. The man he was tending to was covered in bloody spots, most likely bullet wounds, there was even a piece of flesh missing from her side, some sort of animal bite. I tried to get out of the bed without him noticing, but apparently I had failed, for he said to me, "You're tougher than you look boy. You had quite the wound on your head, I'm shocked that you were even able to lift it." the man was still examining the patient, but he still seemed like he was focused on me.
"What, did you lose your voice too?"
"No, but what happened? Where am I"
"Oh, why, this is Megaton, and what happened? You were flying in some flying thing and it broke, you fell out. I had to try to keep everybody out because they thought you were some kind of god, you see. The people here aren't very bright, I'll give you that."
"Flying thing?...But how did I survive?" I tried to get up, but the man stopped me.
"I don't think that you should try something like that for quite a while. How'd you survive? I really got no clue. By the way, I'm Doc Sam, nice to meet you." He sent his hand out to me in a friendly gesture.
"What do I do to it?" I stared at him confused. It seemed fimiliar, but I couldn't remember what it was.
"What do mean? Oh, right, you hit your head. Well, this is called a "handshake" you take my hand, and we intriduce ourselves.
I did as he told me. Suddenly, it all came back. The Enclave, Dad, Jonas, Amata, the crash.
"I need to find my dad!" I burst out.
"What? Oh no you don't, you need to make sure you don't wreck that leg any more than you already did."
"No, I mean it. The Enclave could get here any minute, just to kill me!"
"What?! The Enclave? From Enclave Radio? I thought that was just a loop of some pre-war stuff."
"No, they're very real, and very dangerous" I tried getting up and ignored the immense pain on my body, but Doc Sam pushed me back onto the bed.
"I don't care if the covenant is coming for you, I'll strap you down if I have to!"
"Fine, I'll stay."
"Good, I'll fix you something to eat then."
As I lay in the bed, the memories of my childhood flashed before me. I started thinking, "I wonder if other people had better childhoods than me, probably not, I mean, they grew up in the wasteland... I'd been trained to kill when I was eight, and killed someone when I was ten. How's that for manliness?" My eyes fluttered closed and I drifted off to sleep.
--Chapter 3--
----Time to shine--
Three weeks since the day when I fell out of my vertibird. The food out here in the wasteland was terrible, and water that I used to wash my hands and urinate in was considered a luxury to have, it was more expensive than the finest wines and fine wines weren't irradiated because they were kept in underground storage chambers. Doc Sam was a nice person, he told me about the happenings of the wasteland and who was good, who was bad. But what confused me was why the raiders did what they did, why? They didn't have a reason, they didn't have a cause.
Suddenly, I heard gunshots from far away. Sounded like an M-14 Assault rifle, and something similar to an M429 SAW. That wasn't good. Then, the door from the town square to the clinic was kicked in. But the door the the infirmiry was still closed, and Doc Sam had locked it, so I couldn't leave. My leg had healed, and I had been trained in disarming people with firearms before. I could hear a man with a gruff voice demanding that Doc Sam hand over his caps and his valuables. Doc Sam was telling them not to do something they would regret. Bad idea. The familiar sound of an M-14 filled the clinic. "Well at least I won't have to pay him now..." I thought grimly. The other man said they shoud check the patients' room. I got up from the bed, the pain wasn't as bad as it had been on day one, but it still hurt, I did a few stretches quietly and went to the side of the door and waited for it to open. The head of a SAW came through the door, as it turned my way, I grabbed it and smashed it on his skull. I then flipped the gun around to sit lovingly in my arms. The other man was wearing a patchy outfit that matched Doc Sam's description of Raider Armor. He was frozen still for a few seconds, but then raised the gun towards my face. "I was right." I said. "An M-14 Assault Rifle." The man seemed too scared to shoot. The man dropped the gun and put his hands up. I threw him against the wall and said, "You move, I shoot". Walking to the entrance of the clinic, I saw the reception desk and Sam's body beside it, I checked his pulse, as I was shown in first-aid class. He was still alive, but just barely. I lacked the medical skills necessary to make his vitals stable.
"Don't bother, I'm getting old anyways..."
"Old?! You're fifty-three years old!" I shouted at him in dismay.
"What, did you think a sixty year old could survive in a horrible place like this?"
"Well..."
"Go talk, arrgh! To Lucas Simms, he'll help you out...By the way, I never did get your name."
"Kody. My name is Kody."
"My neice had that name."
"What do mean 'had'?" I questioned.
"She's dead now."
And with that, the old Doc Sam passed on.
I went back to the patient room. The raider had curled up into a ball and was rocking back and forth. I stared at him and he grabbed my leg.
"PLEASE DON'T KILL ME! PLEASE! I'M BEGGIN' YA! IT WAS MY BROTHER'S IDEA! I'M SO SORRY! I DIDN'T WANT TO DO THIS!" He was begging so hard, I almost felt bad for him.
I pulled the SAW up to his face. With that, the teen hushed. I pulled him up and carried him like a hostage, in case there were more raiders. The town square was empty. Everyone was probably hiding in their houses. I walked into the center, where the windows of all the houses could see me. I saw children popping their heads to the windows, only to have their parent pull them back down. I kicked the raider down on his knees, now he was not crying for mercy, he knew he was going to die. I admired his courage, or what scrap of it was left. I placed the barrel of the gun on the back of his head and pulled the trigger. The loud bang of the M429 SAW rang out and filled the town. Doors burst open and people came out rejoicing.
The raiders were dead.
--Chapter 4--
----You Can't Change The Definition--
Two weeks. Two weeks had passed since that incident at the clinic, and much had changed. I had talked to Lucas Simms like Doc Sam had told me to. The "Sheriff" of Megaton told me if I wanted to do good and bring justice to the wastes, I should join the Regulators. He said they were the lawbringers of the wasteland. I then asked him why someone would build a town around a bomb that could go off at any moment. He told me if I wanted, I could try to disarm it.
"Alright, if you want to try it, go easy first, make sure you know what you're doing." He said in a cautious tone.
"Don't worry Sheriff, I've gone through training to do things like this." I said arrogantly. The reason I was a fool to say this was because I had actually decided to take the "Advanced Weapon Maintenance" course instead of Bomb Squad training. I hope I learned enough from the info that my friend told me during the first-aid class. I guess I could go to the bar and think about what he had told me. It had been two years since he told me that stuff, but it was worth a shot.
I walked towards the bar dubbed "Moriarity's Saloon", the catwalks of Megaton reminded me of when I was crossing the bridge between the two control towers in front of the Enclave Base that he had been raised in. They were built at dizzying heights, and if you somehow fell, you would break every bone in your body.
The door flew open as I stepped in. All eyes were turned to me. I wish I still had that SAW. A man in a buisness suit beckoned to me with his hand. A shady looking character. I walked towards him.
"Please, take a seat." I did as he told me.
"Now, is someone like you doing in a cesspool like this? You have no connections, no ties. Would you like to help me take this blight of a town off of a beautiful landscape ?
"What? You want to destroy the town?"
"Well, those are some harsh words...Besides, you will be rewarded handsomely."
"I wouldn't care if you gave me a truck that can fly, I am not going to blow up this town."
"That's quite dissapointing, and here I was thinking that you would be civilized."
"What, did you change the definition of the word 'civilized' in the dictionary?"
And with that, I left. I raced towards Lucas Simms.
