Bosmer Green Pact RP ideas

Post » Sun Aug 09, 2015 9:55 am

I am new to these forums, and I bring something I wish to speak about. Though I am not the first to come up with this, I realize that some of you might aid me in this.
Anywho, let me cut to the chase. I have been wanting to play as a Wood Elf ever since I found out about the Green Pact. I thought the concept made sense and I really like it. Basically, for those who don't know, the green pact is essentially, quoting the wiki, "an oath made by the Bosmer to Y'ffre, the forest deity, in return for his patronage. The pact dictates Bosmer cannot kill, injure, or eat any vegetation"

The conditions are, again, as said on the wiki

  • Only meat-based products can be consumed.
  • Prohibits the use of wood or other vegetable derivatives as building materials.
  • Forbidden to harm trees and plant life for their own betterment.
  • Forbidden to smoke anything of a vegetable nature.

There is also a stated rule about the consumption of any fallen foe within the matter of three days after you were to kill them, but due to being unable to harvest meat, that would be rather tricky.

Now, here are the rules I am going by

  1. First and most obvious, I cannot harvest any plants of any kind
  2. Once an animal is killed, it should be harvested to it's entirety
  3. Potions found or bought may be consumed
  4. No plant may be consumed
  5. The use of wood in tools and weapons are allowed. I don't know the source, but I have heard that Bosmer with no experience of wooden structures or tools find amazement in them, like using buckets as helmets and wagon wheels as shields. (If it ain't made by them, they can use it)
  6. I cannot craft wood into anything.
  7. Potions can only be made with animal parts but no plants

That's about all I can think of in terms of rules. Though I have mods in the game, the ones that I think will be of use in hunting are the Realistic Animals and Predators mod and Hunterborn.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Here are my questions.

  1. Are there any rules I should add or not have?
  2. Should certain mods be included
  3. Should the cannibalistic tendencies be incorporated some way?

I play on Xbox so I don't know about mods, but Namira's quest, encourages (and facilitates) cannibalism. Go investigate the Hall of the Dead in Markarth.

One thing to consider is the Green Pact does not prohibit the use of vegetation harvested outside of Valenwood, particularly if the vegetation is harvested by someone else. So you might want to allow use of some vegetation that is purchased or something like that .

I would like to thank you for the idea, but I largely forget the context of the quest so I have to look it up. I started it by accident on a Breton playthrough long ago, so I only remember it slightly. In the context of the Green Pact, if I were to follow that rule, only the people I kill in combat should be eaten, and not ritualistic cannibalism (at least to my knowledge). Anyway, I would have to look more into the quest

I overlooked that, now that I think of it. I guess that explains why wood elves can use wooden tools like I said before. I mean, I guess I can hold onto plants harvested by other people, but I am not consuming them.

Why? It's fine to consume plants from outside of Valenwood, there is literally no reason and since Rotmeth, a drink from Valenwood that is rotting, spiced meat juice in a mug, uses spices from outside of Valenwood. Consuming them is entirely fine as long as they aren't from Valenwood.

Yeah, the Greenpact was made so the Green would stop attacking the Bosmer, basically it's for survival. However the Green does not care about the other provinces, so the Bosmer happily import lumber and flora from the other provinces and can use them as they see fit.

You could use vegetation and flora that you buy from merchants but you can't harvest your own?

I recently went through a similar process for my Bosmer character. I will share links to a few sites I found very helpful and interesting:

http://tamrielvault.com/group/lore/forum/topics/bosmer-part-2-culture-and-identity

http://tamrielvault.com/profiles/blogs/green-pact-alchemy

http://www.tesof.com/topic-races-weekly-bosmer-wood-elves

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Bosmer

beyond that, for myself, The green pact actually says that Bosmer are not to harm the forests of Valenwood, and that the Bosmer is not to eat anything derived from plants -- and this second prohibition is not necessarly limited to plants from Valenwood.

To quote the wiki article:

"The http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Green_Pact, also known as the Treaty of Frond and Leaf, is a strict code upheld by many of the Bosmer of http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Valenwood. It is said to have guided their existence since the beginning of the "great story". Its rules are clear. Do not harm the forests of Valenwood. Do not eat anything made from plant life. Eat only meat. When enemies are conquered, their meat must be eaten, not left to rot. Do not kill wastefully. Do not take on the shape of beasts."

Their alcoholic beverage is not seasoned with spices from outside the wood, but with bug organs: "Rather than drinking conventional liquor made from grain or fruit, the Bosmer consume jagga (fermented http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Pig's milk) and rotmeth. Rotmeth is made from fermented meat seasoned with thunderbug organs..."

However, they are allowed to use wood from outside Valenwood, especially if gathered by others.

For my own bosmer character, I have allowed her to build fires (Skyrim is cold for a being from a warmer clime), and use dead wood from skyrim, but she is still unwilling to harm any living plant or to eat any form of plant life.

I also found looking at the Bosmeri religious pantheon gave a lot of fun material for roleplaying -- contrasting with nordic ways, and giving priority to the Now, which is a Bosmer cultural trait. I also found the Rite of Theft added a dimension to thieving that goes beyond the thugs of TG in Skyrim, and elevates thievery to an art form and a religion in itself.

Hope this helps!

PS edit: Mods: Use iNeed ( http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/51473/? ) -- it has a setting that allows you to harvest meat and heart from fallen enemies. this allows you to bypass the Namira ring -- which is not really consistent with a Bosmer worldview -- and to still behave as a green pact Bosmer would.

I like to use iNeed together with Campfire mod ( http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/64798/? ), and Hunterborn mod ( http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/33201/? ), along with the patch (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/64934/?) that makes these two work together seamlessly -- this makes hunting , camping, and cooking animals much more realistic and useful. But this is not needed, I just have found it really a good addition to the experience.
