i read all this lore on the bosmer and they sound like cunning quick savages with an equally strange culture full of ancient and to the casual observer disturbing traditions. but then i see them in oblivion and the only tolerable bosmer are cingor brodras and the guy who runs the archers paradox in bravil. whats up with that? do all bosmer except a few have to have some amusing quirk about them?
That's all the cool Bosmer who live in Valenwood. The ones you see in Cyrodiil and Morrowind are the weirdos that got kicked out of the clubhouse.
In all seriousness, they were far from the only comic relief in either game -- just look at Crassius Curio and Lord Rugdumph -- but it's worth noting that the ones who weren't goofy or annoying or bland were pretty [censored] scary. Laugh at Glarthir if you will for being so crazy, but bear in mind that he was "murder people with an axe for waving casually at you" crazy. The Bosmer are weird, and they should be. Each race has its idealized stereotype. The Altmer is a haughty but well-disciplined and powerful mage. The Nord is a hardy and down-to-earth fellow who's none too bright and eager for violence. The Imperial is smooth and silver-tongued, smiling broadly and warmly as he shakes your hand with a knife behind his back. The Bosmer? He just sort of makes everyone feel uncomfortable simply by being in the room. An unparalleled marksman wise in the way of the forest who you turn around to find staring unabashedly at you, casually sharpening his knife by the campfire. He seems harmlessly eccentric, making a fuss about which color plate his food has to be on, and he hasn't said or done anything to make you feel threatened but simply having him around makes you want to sleep with one eye open. That's precisely the sort of Bosmer I want to see in Skyrim.
