Bosmer (Wood Elf) Look and Personality

Post » Sat Feb 05, 2011 1:45 am

Personally (as can probably be deduced from the poll) I prefer the more beast like Morrowind Bosmers. Since Wood elves are supposed to be closer to the animals of the forest etc...

Not to mention I believe that Bethesda really killed the Wood Elves image in Oblivion (I cannot imagine playing as one of those annoying little fools).

I would love to see the black eyed, slender Wood Elves (ALA Magic the Gathering Wood Elves)

I added the Daggerfall and Arena choices.

What do you peeps think?

The way that the FACEGEN engine worked restricted the uniqueness of the races. I have a feeling we are going to see Morrowind-style elves.

I want something new. They said they were changing up the races so that it'll be easier to tell them all apart, so I'd suspect Bosmer are in for a bit of an overhaul.

Ya i really hated wood elves in Oblivion. In fact I hated all the elves in Oblivion. In TES elves are supposed to be much more alien looking then humans. There not just humans with pointy ears. Wood elves are supposed to have solid black eyes, dark elves are supposed to have solid red eyes. Not just red irises. Elves are also supposed to more animal like then the human races. Instead they all sound like British snobs. The only reason I didn't play a Dark elf in Oblivion was I don't want to be something that sounds like Harry Potter. And I didn't play as a Bosmer because I didn't want to be the embodiment of annoying things. They just really need to fix the whole Mer species.

The Bosmer in Morrowind, male ones anyways, always reminded me of that episode of the twilight zone where everyone had a pig face.

Seriously though seems like they had pig faces. I still prefer that to Oblivion's style though, since they kind of made every elf race in the game look alike with the exception of skintone/height. And voices for each race would be nice too, though that might be wishful thinking.

New look, just as short (I like making fun of short things...) and skinnier, and the most important part is to get rid of the ugly faces, not just for bosmer but for all races.

If you look at the few screen shots they have you'll see that at least everyone isn't ugly anymore.

Very true, the Morrowind Dunmer eyes/voices were kick ass! It really helped to flesh out the world. The Dunmer felt like they were more rustic which is fitting of their harsh environment. Also it complemented their rude, xenophobic tendencies. In Oblivion, I cringed when I heard that Dark elf in the prison talk to me for the first time... It seems that Bethesda was much closer to the lore in Morrowind and more detailed in their character design than in Oblivion.

The wood elves in Morrowind looked pretty much like the ones in Oblivion, which wasn't too good in their case. They had one or two wood elves in the game with weird bug eyes, is that the beastial look you're talking about? That was also crap. Forget all that stuff, make the new wood elves better.

If they weren't closer to the lore in Morrowind then in Oblivion then they've NEVER been close to the lore at all, because it was more unique and original then OB was.

Not to be nitpicky but why would you use a Magic the Gathering card from that set to depict elves? The canon for that set had elves being mutated from their true form by magic (or something reminiscent). A more accurate depiction would be to use http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=205228&type=card, which have probably been in more sets than most other elf cards and thus the artwork on the elves is more likely to be closer to what MTG elves are supposed to look like. http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=159038&type=card is also a good card to look to for a more curtailed picture of elves. It's kinda difficult to use any depiction of elves in MTG as a standard for the series though considering how varied they are, I'd probably not go with the one you used though just for the fact that it looks more like an elemental than an elf.

Personally, I'd like a more Morrowind looking elf. Short, thin, dark/brownish eyes, brownish skin (not as yellow as high elves nor as blue as dark elves), dirty colored hair (dirty blond or auburn), with features softer than high or dark elves. I think this is really the flavor of TES elves and should be the standard. Alternatively you could look to their depictions in Dungeons and Dragons manuals for inspiration. In http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r3myjVrpaGQ/TYFC5CyViKI/AAAAAAAAABo/iSNBrAupfXc/s400/Elves.jpg photo wood elves are the third from the left while wild elves are the first from the right; if either were made a head or two shorter they would match fairly closely to TES depictions while adding height to the obvious dark elf or straightening the hair of the Sun Elf (I believe [2nd from the left]) could be used as a good example of a high elf if made half a foot taller.

Morrowind, except only if they don't make them look pathetically weak. I am hoping to make a bosmer, however, if they are like OB or too close to MW I will have to choose another race (unless I can change the body). I want a [slightly] taller Bosmer and abit more muscular.

Let's hope so. In MW I could play a bosmer, but in OB they seemed to be annoying as a rule and not the exception. Seriusly, Bethesda, why did you make them so annoying?

New Welves, no idea how they should look though. OB was ok, MW was ok. Skyrim will probably ok too.

Either way I'm killing just about every one I see, I hate them so much....
Please change them. Also dont make every "off" character a Bosmer. It seemed that every NPC that had an annoying quirk was a Bosmer.

It seems like you just find Bosmer personalities as quirky. Each elf race has its own quirkiness whether it be the aloof dunmer or the haughty altmer. Bosmer are just more open and less constrained by social stigmas than the other elf races so you imagine they're odd.

I like the Magic TGC comparison and think Nissa Revane's Elves come closest to my idea of a TES Bosmer:

Slender, elegant, but also barbaric with unhumanoid features like piercing eyes, unexpected strenght, more pronounced ears and rudimentary fangs. I've always regarded Bosmer a bit like non-feline Kajiti, and less tempted by luxury (or moonsugar). Blizzard tried to do something like that with "night elves" but they got a bit carried away with the tree-hugger theme and the person that came up with purple skin should be send to the gulag. If Bethesda would just bring back the dark eyes, I would be a happy man.

I want variety with every race. With the introduction of different body types, I'm hopeful that we'll see more variation within each race.
