Background

Boss is a fantastic tool for automatically defining your mod Load Order. However, there will always be some mods that have not yet been defined in BOSS's Master List and some that will never be defined because they are your own personal mods. In addition, the Master List is updated very frequently on the web but is updated much less frequently on Nexus.

What does the BOSS Master List Manager do?

The Boss Master List Manager (BOMM) is NOT a mod! It is a Microsoft Word document macro that..

  • Automates the process of updating your local Master List from the frequently updated web list
  • Allows you to define where you want your undefined ESPs/ESMs to be placed in the Load Order and applies these as changes to the Master List so that you will not get any undefined ESPs/ESMs
  • Tells you when one of your undefined ESPs/ESMs has been added to the Master List and gives you the option of automatically removing it from your Definitions.
  • Allows you to override BOSS's Load Order for selected ESPs, ESMs or BOSS Groups
  • Automatically adds entries for Unknown mods listed in your BOSS log file
  • Allows you to define your own special code lines (eg Bashed Patched tag suggestions)

BOMM provides full support for BOSS-F (Fallout 3) users.

Microsoft Word 2010, 2007 or 2003
- It may work on earlier versions, but I am unable to test this

The first is cool, but you realize that you already can edit your own masterlist.txt file manually, right?

Bodevanlot -- of course he realizes that, that's how this tool works (editing the local masterlist.txt file). The problem is that once you've made changes to your personal masterlist file, it becomes annoying to have to re-do those changes every time you want to update your list to match the new changes in the web version.

I've always just maintained my own copy of the masterlist, and used a diff/merge program to incorporate new changes every once in a while from the web version, but that gets to be quite a pain.

One thing, though -- you mentioned that you can choose where you want undefined plugins to be placed in the masterlist, which is undoubtedly useful. Is there any chance you could also support moving a plugin that is recognized to a custom location, and maintaining that move even when updating the masterlist?

That's not something that's often needed, but there are cases when it's useful. I've never used Word macros and I have no idea how hard this would be to implement; obviously it's not worth it if it would be difficult.

As an example, every time I update my masterlist.txt, I need to make sure to keep "Choices and Consequences - SM Plugin Refurbish - Orrery.esp" in a custom place. This is because that plugin needs to fit into one of two places in the load order, depending on whether or not you're using the merged version of SM Plugin Refurbish, and BOSS doesn't support conditional placement like that. So the full BOSS entry for that plugin is:
Choices and Consequences - SM Plugin Refurbish - Orrery.esp? Make sure you have the latest version.? if using the merged SM Plugin Refurbish, move to load after that.

Since I am using the merged version, I have edited my masterlist.txt to move that whole entry away from its default location and to a new place after the merged SM Plugin esp. It's not a big deal to just make sure to keep that custom ordering when I update my masterlist.txt, but if your tool was able to automatically handle custom placements like that for me, that would be really awesome.

OK I've been wrestling with this for over an hour - I give.

1st question - even after making it a safe place in word UAC doesn't seem to like - I'm wondering it giving the document admin priviledges is ok (not sure since not an exe).

2nd question - is asks if I mean to use version 617, which is the latest version. Continue with update? - version 617 of what?
The few mods that do seem to be recognized it gives a message of Mod XXX.esp has been added to your master list - remove this entry from your Load Order Definitions. What does this mean?
... so in this case let us say that the added file is 'Bashed Patch - John.esp' (I run 3 profiles and each with their own unique bashed patch - and name each bashed patch after the name of character).

3rd question - an error is more obscure. It states ' Mart's Monster Mod - Diverse Runeskulls Loot beta Place After Bashed Patch.espLoadAfter ESP is not in the master list - Correct your load order definitions.'
... in this case I was trying to load the MMM module after 'Bashed Patch - John.esp' which was supposedly added above. But then in trying to load it after plain ole 'Bashed patch, 0.esp' I get the same error.

So it is not recognizing Bashed patch, 0.esp as being in the masterlist? Or what?
... in fact is it reading anything after the words 'Bashed Patch' - maybe that is the issue.

Just like with the file tree thing - I feel very close to getting this to work.
And just like with the file tree - I believe more explicit instructions are required.

I still haven't been able to give this a try yet, so I can't answer your other questions, but I can tell you that 617 is the current revision number of the web version of http://better-oblivion-sorting-software.googlecode.com/svn/masterlist.txt (the revision history is visible at http://code.google.com/p/better-oblivion-sorting-software/updates/list). So it's asking you whether to continue updating your masterlist.txt to the most current revision.

I think the easiest way that this could be done is to include a section where you define ESPs that should be deleted from the masterlist. You would then define the ESP in the normal way within the "Undefined ESPs Load Order Definitions". Would this approach satisfy your requirements?

A side effect would be that any comments, bash tags, etc for the ESP you delete would be lost - any thoughts?

Question 1
Have you copied the BOSS Master List Manager.docm to the folder you defined as a trusted location? If you have, is the box next to "Disable all trusted locations.." *Unchecked*? UAC (in the Windows sense) is, as far as I know, meaningless for Word macros - it more to do with programs that try and do installs or change system settings.

Question 2
If you are already using the latest version, it asks if you want to continue or not. So if you have made changes to your "Undefined ESPs Load Order Definitions", you would answer Yes to apply these changes. If you have made no changes, then you would answer No, because there would be nothing to change in your master list.

Also, if you want to make changes to your "Undefined ESPs Load Order Definitions", this gets you to the configuration document without having to wait for the changes to be applied.

Question 2a
If you see "Mod XXX.esp has been added to your master list - remove this entry from your Load Order Definitions", it means that an ESP you have in your "Undefined ESPs Load Order Definitions" is now defined in the standard masterlist (ie has been added by the BOSS team). So no action is taken and the message is letting you know that can remove the entry from your load order definitions table, because it is no longer required.

Question 3
This message is displayed if BMLM does not find the ESP you specified in the "Load After" column. I just ran a test on the "Bashed Patch, 0.esp" to try and reproduce your problem, but it worked as it should. I can only think that there might a something not quite correct in your esp name specification - perhaps a hidden character has been inadvertently inserted.

Try using Windows Explorer to copy and paste the name (Rename, Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C, Esc and then Ctrl-V to paste into your list)

Also, is "Mart's Monster Mod - Diverse Runeskulls Loot beta Place After Bashed Patch.esp" the name of the ESP?

From the example of what you wanted to do, you should have "Bashed Patch - John.esp" in the left column and "Bashed patch, 0.esp" in the right column to achieve what you wanted. Just tried this and it works fine.

I would be happy to provide this, just not quite sure what I should add - but am very open to suggestions.

So is there a danger in applying the changes more than once. I'd assume you would not design it that way but your wording above seems to suggest it.

I just pasted the name of the mod into my list and specified that it load after the standard Bash Patch and it works for me. Check that you have not included any additional characters in your table (eg pressing the Space key after ESP) - I suspect that it is something like that.

You can run BMLM many times - it always erases the contenst of your local copy of the master list, gets the latest list and then applies your changes

I have an unregged version of Word 2007, not sure if I can use it anymore since it's long past the trial date.

Any plans to have it ported to OpenOffice.org formats? (Hmm not sure if it has a specific macro save file though... should probably check that.)

No plans for OpenOffice.org formats - just don't use it.

It will probably work on earlier versions of Micosoft Word - if that is of any use.

I have implemented the solution I proposed that allows you to change the load order of BOSS defined ESPs/ESM - basically, you specify that they should be deleted and then include them in them Undefined table. Hope this is what you were after.

So as you can see it then placed the bashed patch,0 after the other bashed patches when I defined the order as before those bashed patches.

Then why also would the OOO Magic_Script_Effect_fix.esp be loading after bash and what is with the totally erroneous tags for Duke's brand new archery mod - that as far as I can tell is not even on the masterlist yet, much less needing those tags.

Sorry about the colors - don't know how to undo them - best viewed in Hi-f.

Oh wait I see the issue with the bash tag suggestion - that is actually the bash tag suggestion for the AN filter that got moved down because this gizmo injected the other mods inbetween.

Also I never could get the MMM loot plugin to work.

Ok I see several instances where if this thing injects a line (mod) after a mod that has bashed patch suggestions then those suggestions get shifted down to below the mods injected.

for example I injected these mods I made after Aylied Loot EXtended:
Game Tweaks Early.esp, Home Care Mods Merged.esp, CNRP 4 OOO.esp, ImperREAL IC + Additions.esp and as you can see the last one inherited the tags from ALEX:
Ayleid Loot EXtension.esp

Game Tweaks Early.esp

Home Care Mods Merged.esp

CNRP 4 OOO.esp

ImperREAL IC + Additions.esp

Each time you run the Macro, it always clears your current entries, downloads the latest version and then applies your changes - so not quite sure what you mean when you say "if you already altered the list once it is best to start over with a fresh list".

You are quite right about the comments and special lines that follow the ESP you are loading after - I will do something to correct this as it can get confusing.

Got to admit I lost track of where you got to with all the edits :) Is it (apart from the tag line issue), working correctly for you? I think from your last edit that it is.

Here is what I plan to change before releasing what I hope will be the final version...
  • Ensure that esp/esm lines are inserted after the symbol codes associated with the Load After esp/esm line (Psymon's observation)
  • The Override esp/esm list will delete the "\" line if it follows the specified esp/esm - will make a change to stop this happening
  • If you have updated your configuration and you run the macro, the message about latest version will not be displayed (unless you have saved the document before running the macro)
  • In addition to suppressing the message, you will be asked if you want to save the document containing your configuration after the master list has been updated
  • If a BOSS log file exists, BMLM will use it to add any undefined esp/esm to your Undefined list. The load after entries will be blank, so the entries will be ignored until you specify the Load After esp/esm. It will not add any entries that are already defined.

I welcome any comments on the above and will consider additional suggestions.

This is compounded by the fact that the one real bug is that it will truncate bash tag suggestions from below the mod you are adding your mods to follow down to below the mods you add. This makes the list confusing to read and completely erroneous. As described in the last edit.

That is the main issue ... hang on I will post my BOSS read out with color edits to hopeful illustrate - give me a few ...

See my number 1 action - have already got a test version that now adds your undefined mod *after* all the bash commands, etc. This will remove your biggest issue - which I completely agree with.

I have also corrected a problem caused by the line wrapping on the lines beginning with special symbols.

So far I have completed the first three of the chnages I outlined in my earlier post.

OK here is the BOSS read out I've coded it like this.

As per my earlier post, I think I have corrected (but not uploaded) the problem you described re the "injection" point.

I will use your BOSS log to test my automatic entry creating change so that I can see if it works, but also so I can try and position the various undefined mods to see if I can reproduce some of the problems you reported.

Just did a test using your undefined mods - in particular this is what I specified in the Undefined table...

Bashed Patch - Elric.esp ~ Bashed Patch, 0.esp
Bashed Patch - Thotep.esp ~ Bashed Patch - Elric.esp
Bashed Patch - Vrel.esp ~ Bashed Patch - Thotep.esp
Mart's Monster Mod - Diverse Runeskulls Loot beta Place After Bashed Patch.esp ~ Bashed Patch - Vrel.esp

This was the masterlist result...

Bashed Patch, 0.esp

So it looks like it works (unless I have misunderstood something) - or of course fixed something in the new version that I used.

I have now completed all the changes I outlined in my earlier post and will upload the revised version within the next day or so - final tests and documentation updates still to do.

As I posted at the end of that post with my BOSS read out - those I did not define so that was not and never was the issue.

As I stated the issue, as I understand it, is the truncating of bash tags.
It also continued to have trouble with the MMM plugin and the OOO script effect plugin was also misplaced (I just checked it is a BOSS issue).

I will wait for the new version to test anything more out.

again - I stated that I did not define those and to ignore them.
