BETTER OBLIVION SORTING SOFTWARE
Past Threads:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1058962-relz-boss-for-fallout-3/

A simple "one-click" program for users to quickly optimise and avoid detrimental conflicts in their Fallout 3 mod load-order.

Features:
  • Checks and correctly positions all the mod files involved with a FOOK install
  • Supports over a large number of mods
  • Warns the user about any commonly miss-installed files.
  • Provides useful load order notes.
  • Provides Wrye Bash for FO3 with Bash Patch tag suggestions which it will import.
  • Is mostly right (most of the time)!
  • Is under constant development and improvement by a team of modders and Fallout 3 experts.
  • Differentiates between FOOK and non-FOOK set-ups.
Better Oblivion Sorting Software (BOSS) will reorder all the mods it knows about (listed in the masterlist.txt database file) and puts ones it doesn't know after. The unknown mods will be in the same order as you had them before running BOSS.

BOSS is designed to assist installing a wide variety of other mods and help mod users avoid serious conflicts. It isn'?t a complete solution to load ordering issues as there are far too many mods out there (estimated at about 30 thousand). To properly place mods the program doesn'?t know about, a good working knowledge of Fallout 3 mod load ordering is going to be necessary. Some research and documentation reading will go a long way.

REQUIREMENTS:

Windows (or Wine), Fallout 3, some mods.

DOWNLOADS:

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10193

There are no official mirrors at this time.

INSTALLATION AND USE:

1. Backup your load order with FOMM or Wrye Bash for FO3.

2. If you have Wrye Bash, make sure it has its "Lock Times" function deactivated.

4. Run BOSS-F.bat (the .bat file, not the .exe file).

The output of the utility will be displayed immediately. Read any notes, install errors if applicable and/or Wrye Bash Bashed Patch suggestions. Wrye Bash can import suggestions from BOSS-F and apply them automatically.

You will need to re-order "unknown" mods by hand with FOMM or Wrye Bash.

Wrye Bash automatically integrates BOSS's Bashed Patch suggestions from the masterlist.txt file. Some Bashed Patch suggestion can come with conditions and notes that require human intervention so read the suggestions BOSS makes thoroughly and adjust tags by hand if necessary.

UNINSTALLATION:

Delete BOSS-F.bat, BOSS-F.exe and masterlist.txt.

Also delete BOSSlog.txt, modlist.txt and modlist.old if BOSS-F has been run.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Won't run: Using BOSS-F version under 1.51:
Update to version 1.51

Won't run: BOSS-F not extracted (unzipped) to ...\oblivion\data but a sub-folder or the Oblivion folder.

All BOSS-F files must share the same folder as your mods.

Check you have:
  • BOSS-F.exe
  • BOSS-F.bat
  • masterlist.txt
in your ...\oblivion\data folder.

Won't change load order: OS is Vista and FO3 is installed in Program Files.

Install FO3 outside the Program Files folder where possible. Otherwise temporarily deactivate UAC.

Won't Change load order and generating a blank text file: OS is Windows 7:

Give group or users name: BATCH controls of the Oblivion folder

Won't change load order: Wrye Bash's load order locking feature is enabled.

Disable before changing load order.

A text box flashes up but disappears.

Run BOSS-F.bat not BOSS-F.exe

FURTHER DETAILS:

There are no options, command-line switches or run-time choices to make.

The only thing this tool does is re-date files and create a couple of text files including one that is displayed to the user with (hopefully!) handy comments and/or install error messages.

Fallout.esm is never touched and all file dates are derived from it.

The program archive contains masterlist.txt which is, obviously, the master list of mods the program recognises and is the most frequently updated component of BOSS.

The output for the user to read is called BOSSlog.txt and is saved as a text file and displayed by Window's default text file handling program once BOSS has finished re-dating files.

The program generates a text file called modlist.txt which is your list of mods prior to re-ordering.

The changes BOSS-F makes can be undone in the following way:
  • Rename masterlist.txt to masterlist.old (or any temporary name).
  • Rename modlist.txt to masterlist.txt .
  • Run BOSS-F.bat .
  • Delete masterlist.txt .
  • Rename masterlist.old to masterlist.txt .
If modlist.txt already exists (when you run the program for the second time or more), it will be renamed to modlist.old before a new modlist.txt file is created. This gives you two levels of undo.

One of the best ways more experienced users can use BOSS is to edit your own copy of masterlist.txt and include there any mods not listed. You can "merge" in new updates with the excellent free open-source WinMerge software. http://www.winmerge.org

CONTRIBUTIONS AND HELP:

Questions, suggestions, unrecognised mods and general discussion takes place http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1058962-relz-boss-for-fallout-3/.

User corrections to the masterlist are vital. Let us know what you know.

Lists of unrecognised mods are welcome but the only way we can include them in the database in a timely way is if we get:
  • The ESP/ESM file name(s) and
  • A link to where the description, download or readme can be found to read or download.
  • A brief description of each mod will also help. Feel free to make load order suggestions.

UPDATES:

Updates are published from and the latest masterlist is always on Google Code Repository and the latest masterlist is always on Google Code Repository.
Files on Nexus are updated once a month or so. Always use latest dated files.

CREDITS:

Sources for the mod list and its order include: The guy that made FOLOT (Clatvicus or some such, correct me!!!!!) ; suggestions and instructions from many other modders; lots of advice and information from users. Some people have gone out of their way and provided continuing, expert and detailed help - thank you very much!

Firstly, sorry for the poor performance by me, but Uni has taken up most of my 2010 so far, and I have various projects for Oblivion on the go, so no time to manage this. So basically I am looking for someone to essentially take over from me. I will be able to do a bit every now and then this summer, but once I get back to uni in October I doubt I will have much time. Thank you to whoever has been updating the google code page. PM if you don't already have access to the mod on TESNexus so you can manage it there if you want to.

Secondly, thanks to everyone who has submitted the mods, and an extra special thanks to those wonderful people that have been updating the google code page. It's much appreciated, and without your help this would have died a long time ago.

So, let the missing mods commence in their masses!!

megalight.esp needs to go above any Weather mods that assign new Climate or Image Space to Megaton. In particular Dynamic Weather needs to change these two records or an abrupt de-sync occurs between the Megaton worldspace weather and the Wasteland weather.

The new lights work just fine (as does the Dynamic Weather) with megalight.esp loaded above all the Dynamic Weather plugins, but I would place it above all weather plugins in the masterlist because I assume they also assign special Climates or Image Spaces to Megaton that shouldn't be overwritten.

You're link to the Google Code Repository takes us to the Oblivion BOSS, not BOSS-F. Unless I've missed something of course.

it's basically the same repository.
Here's a link to the latest http://better-oblivion-sorting-software.googlecode.com/svn/FO3Masterlist/masterlist.txt

AliTheLord: I'm willing to participate in maintaining the fallout masterlist and adding bash tags and the likes from forum suggestions.

As per the PM, yes, thanks, the help is much appreciated :D

I'll get in contact with Pacific or someone with admin powers on the google page.

@ Doomaeger I'll change it to a more appropriate place.

Dogmeat Leather Armor - no crafting.esp

…was not recognized. It should be put in the same place as "Dogmeat Leather Armor - CRAFT.esp"... but they cannot be used together if you wanted to add "Conflicts With:" comments.

It's from the new version here: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4474

The old version had "no crafting" plugins too, but maybe they were named differently.

I was trying to get the FEM Project (also known as Project D) fully functional in a heavily modded game. The way I succeeded was placing FEM.esm as the last esm in my load-order and placing the FEM esps directly after the MMM esps. Then I placed Lings Pretty Things esps directly after the FEM esps. If I didn't place Lings Pretty Things after FEM, an issue comes up where NPCs using a vanilla body don't have clothing. If the FEM esps are too early in the load-order, I experienced an issue with severe slowdowns CTDs and missing textures. So, I thought I should share this.

I use BOSS as the primary method to sort my load-order and then hand-sort the rest based on my best guesswork and re-arrange the ones that need re-arranging (in this case, Lings Pretty Things). For reference, my complete load order is as follows:

There are a few files I'm forgetting. I can go back and do another BOSS sort tonight to mark down the ones I'm missing, if that's helpful. (EDIT: *done* --added the files to the list--) (EDIT 2: Removed some links to make sure everything is within forum guidelines; all mods referenced are on FO3Nexus)

Oh, and my name over on Nexus is xaliqen, just in case anyone sees my post over on the FEM page.

BOSS is the best and I love it. It's the flux capacitor of my gaming world. :)

I hope this is helpful info. Thanks again!

EDIT on June 21: New file added on Nexus by DoctorL as optional Project D clothes plug-in:

FEMed TYPE3 Cloths.esp

Note that I had to move FEMed TYPE3 Cloths.esp directly *after* Lings Pretty Things in the load order. So, the new relevant section of the load-order looks like this:

*MMM esps go here (above)*
++ SeducingWomen_-_override.esp
78 FEM - EXNEM enabler.esp
79 FEM - FANTASY enabler.esp
7A FEM - NILE enabler.esp
7B FEM - BABE enabler.esp
7C FEM - DIMON enabler.esp
7D LingsPrettyThings.esp
7E LingsPrettyThings-BrokenSteel.esp
++ LingsPrettyThings-SeducingWomen.esp
FEMed TYPE3 Cloths.esp<---------- NEW optional add-on for Project D goes here
*Companion Mods (e.g. LucyWestCompanion.esp) go here (below)*

It is most likely essential to use a merged or bashed patch in order to get best results using a combination like this.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I've integrated all those into the http://better-oblivion-sorting-software.googlecode.com/svn/FO3Masterlist/masterlist.txt.

Wait, in the readme it says to install it to the 'oblivion/data' folder. Is that right? Shouldn't it be the 'fallout 3/data' folder?

Wait, in the readme it says to install it to the 'oblivion/data' folder. Is that right? Shouldn't it be the 'fallout 3/data' folder?

yes, of course it's fallout 3/data.
that seems to be a relic from the ported oblivion version of BOSS.

Yeah, thought so. Just wanted to be sure. Thanks.

EDIT: Okay, another question. When I run the .bat after installed it says 'Windows cannot find bosslog.txt. Make sure you typed the name correctly then try again.' I didn't get a 'BOSSlog.txt' in the install. What should I do?

Make sure, you have administrator privileges.
Which folder did you install Fallout 3 to?

Your mods should be sorted, but because of the Windows UAC BOSS won't be able to write the log to your folder.

Oh, I have Windows 7, I didn't know that was a problem with other OS's than Vista. I have it installed to 'Program Files/Bethesda' and I have admin privileges. So, should I move it? In the black box that appears it says 'Access Denied'.

Well, the easiest method i could think of would be to edit the BOSS-F.bat file.
Replace the contents of the file with the following lines:

@echo offcd /d %~dp0boss-f.exe > BOSSlog.txtstart BOSSlog.txt

After saving it, try to run it by clicking it with the right mouse button and selecting "Run as Administrator"

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I've integrated all those into the http://better-oblivion-sorting-software.googlecode.com/svn/FO3Masterlist/masterlist.txt.

Awesome! I can't wait to get home and try out the new list.

The load order for Ling's is completely messed up now.

It comes out as:

LingsPrettyThings-FOOK2-MMM.esp
LingsPrettyThings.esp
LingsPrettyThings-BrokenSteel.esp
LingsFinerThings.esp

It should be:

LingsFinerThings.esp
LingsPrettyThings.esp
LingsPrettyThings-FOOK2-MMM.esp
LingsPrettyThings-BrokenSteel.esp

Edit:
I don't think the order for the last two matters as long as they're after FOOK2/MMM/Broken Steel.

RobCo and Wasteland Whisperer and just updated versions with new .esp names and can likely go in the same places. Companion Share & Recruit can likely go in the same place as the other two, or wherever Sharing & Caring Companions goes. Companion Core is TalkieToaster's integrated companion thingie, and probably needs to be before Companion Share & Recruit, RobCo Certified and Wasteland Whisperer to work properly.
