'Bosses'

Post » Mon Jan 31, 2011 10:18 pm

Can someone help me refresh my memory, who was the gate keeper in Oblivion because i can only think of one guy and that can't be it because he was just like a daedric soldier like the rest

Umaril was a joke he was suppose to be this crazy king who came back, 10 hits with dawnfang and hes dead, that was a dissapointment, i don't consider Dagon a dissappoinment and i thought it would be stupid if we fought him because i mean he was a giant, we came up to his big toe, no human could of killed him so i liked that we just watched the animation take place

The Gatekeeper was the golem thing in the shivering isles that you needed bone arrows to kill.

ohh ok thank you ya he was pretty cool his background story was pretty cool also and if you didn't know his weakness then he was very hard to kill a lot harder than umaril

As a mage, I was able to burn Mannimarco to a crisp. As a Knight, I was able to dispatch him with ease.

Too easy, IMO. Didn't scale compared to other "bosses". Hell, you'd think he would be harder to beat than Mankar Camaron. but nooooo

The Gate Keeper was easy with my level 40 Knight. Used 20 poisons, but didn't take more than a few minutes.

Every boss besides the gate keeper felt incredibly underwhelming in Oblivion imo. Worst of all dagon because you didn't actually fight the bad guy.

I don't if the forum rules are against linking, so I won't link to the video but in youtube search "Resistance 2 Boss Fight Leviathan" Now with that said, while a fight like that wouldn't work in Oblivion, it does show that size doesn't matter(in games :P) I'm not arguing with you because I definitely see your point. I'm just pointing out that it would be possible for BGS to design a boss that's way larger than the player. However I don't know if they're capable of designing it in a dynamic interesting fight(as I'm sure very few if any designers could given the scope of these games) But it would be interesting if they could.

But yeah I see you point, it wouldn't be plausible for us to fight him at that size. Maybe if he was closer to human size, maybe twice as large as the player it would have been really cool to fight. I'm not totally disapointed but I would have liked to be the hero not the side kick(I do things alone, I don't like having help)

I was so high level by the time I met any bosses that it was a cake walk anyway. So my perception of their balance on lower levels isn't too great.

Dagon was a terrible boss fight.

Mankar Cameron was good, purely because of the build-up. Still managed to kill him with one sneak attack arrow through the eye though...

There are no boss fights in Oblivion. Everyone fights the exact same way, from random bandit/hedge wizard to Mannimarco.

I'm actually somewhat okay with Dagon in Oblivion. He is destruction incarnate and can coin-flip islands so we shouldn't be able to beat him at all. But yeah him showing up and not doing much at all was pretty lame.

The King of Worms was the worst anticlimix though. Actually, the whole mages guild storyline was pretty lame in general.

I didn't like Jyggalags outfit/design - his armor was so weird... so was Umarail .. they kinda had the same outfit only different colouring. I liked the gatekeeper, he was unique

Most disappointing "Boss?"

Other: All of them!

The nastiest one imo was the Gatekeeper, and he wasn't all that- some of Relmyna's Tears, Gatekeeper Bone Arrows...and my mage didn't use either- just kept hitting him with Paralyze and the fight was a laugh riot.

For me TES bosses are not even about difficulty, but about being unique, which they sadly are not for the most part, Dagon was rather boring for a daedric prince - I mean he was a walking special effect, at last they could make him visually awesome! As it is, he was huge enough to break a neck, but because of that I can't even honestly say how he looked like... Gatekeeper was the best - he felt unique and interesting. While Mannimarco was so bland it hurt, I may have killed him in passing and wouldn't even realize that he is a boss, just some Altmer in a usual robe... I hope Skyrim bosses are remarkable - look differently, act differently have unique strength, weaknesses, attacks, and of course "souvenirs" to pick up form their bodies :D

I see no one mentioned Underfrykte Matron. You want some challenge at low level? Go visit Dive Rock at the north-east end of the map.
There has been a lot of outcry from old TES fans about Mannimarco, because he was sissy and weak. I agree with the sissy part, but for the weak part, you gotta remember that the arch-mage had to die to prevent his cheat spell. If his cheat spell worked on you, you'd lose even before you had a chance to fight.
Personally, I don't see GateKeeper as a boss. He's just a gate keeper. An introduction. A little overpowered for an introduction because everybody talked about how awesome he'd have to be when he was still in development stage.
Dagon, well, you're not allowed to fight him. He's a daedric prince, and your mortal weapons cannot kill him on Nirn. I think he fitted the lore very well. There's nothing wrong with having an NPC to take the glory.
It is not a true statement that everyone fought same ways. For instance, rats and mountain lions had distinctively different moves and behaviors than bears or Clannfear. There were wisps, and daedroth fought differently too. All actor NPCS did have same moves per weapon size, but that was it. I mean, name two daedric creatures that fought same way. If you look closely, even Storm atronach has different moves than frost. Goblins had very annoying fight style which was different from that of people or Zombies. There were a lot of unique creatures with different behaviors and moves. People just don't remember. Skeletons and lich fought differently, and wraith used very well balanced tactics with both melee and magic. Wolves were pretty plain, and Spriggans had a summoning spell. I remember getting annoyed by mages that keeps running away while melee classes charging in.
The real problem is that some players approached all of them with same methods, and didn't get killed for doing that. I remember getting killed by an wisp because I was a noob. I also remember getting my first character messed up by vampire infection because I was a noob.

I think Demon's Souls should be looked to for an example of how to do boss fights. Extremely hard, requiring lots of strategy, appropriately fancy rewards (obviously not Souls in Skyrim. Loot and the like) and each being vastly different from the last in terms of both appearance and battle style. And of course, individual theme songs (seems a small detail, but this isn't Final Fantasy. We need more than a 'Fight Theme' and a 'Boss Fight Theme').

I agree 100% not only were they hard to beat, some were terrifying. Alot of them made you go...oh [censored]...theres no way I can beat that and when you did you felt really good about yourself because you just killed this crazy creature. The Dragon God comes to mind when it comes to bosses that were just freakin scary. He was more of a puzzle to beat then a fight but he was just so big and just brutal looking.

Lot's where good, Mankar was awesome, so was the gatekeeper and jyggalag. Mannimarco just made me upset, like he had never done anything outstanding.

Mannimarco was lame as poop.

I loved the gatekeeper fight, though.
