'Bosses'

Post » Mon Jan 31, 2011 8:26 pm

Thought I'd make a bit of a poll. By 'Boss' I mean those enemies which are hyped up as a challenging enemy, like rulers of evil organisations you have to defeat and such.

Dagon was just crummy. Jyggalyg was the best in the game though

EDIT: The Foghters guild boss was essentially just a tree

Mannimarco. He was a joke.

Jyygalag.

Gods and Daedric princes.

Should be much more powerful.

I don't think there were really and difficult bosses in OB.

All the bosses were disappointing because they were level scaled. You didn't fight Dagon, so he has to be the best one. Jyggalag was the most disappointing, he's a god. That wasn't a fight with a god. Not at all.

i didnt find any of the bosses chalenging, i wish they would bring back mannimarco and make him insane cause he had the most hype to finally reach and then the biggest letdown, i want a rematch and have him ultra powerful, so i can slaughter him or, join him

Mannimarco is the most anti-climatic boss in Oblivion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGUoRHqBgbo (to almost live off this status from Daggerfall), but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0bmP7Km7qs Pathetic.

All other "boss" in Oblivion are meh.

As for boss in Skyrim, surprise me.

I think Demon's Souls should be looked to for an example of how to do boss fights. Extremely hard, requiring lots of strategy, appropriately fancy rewards (obviously not Souls in Skyrim. Loot and the like) and each being vastly different from the last in terms of both appearance and battle style. And of course, individual theme songs (seems a small detail, but this isn't Final Fantasy. We need more than a 'Fight Theme' and a 'Boss Fight Theme').

Dwemer Scoped Rifl- Just kidding, I want a crossbow.

Worst? Mannimarco from Oblivion. Failed on so many levels. Didn't look anything like he did in Daggerfall, did not give the feeling of any sort of awesome power, goes down ridiculously easily, looks like a typical High Elf, and the entire story surrounding him was incredibly stupid and badly written, even by Bethesda standards.

Best? Eh, I guess Mankar gets it. Everyone else is no different from a regular mook, just with more HP to whittle down (or are really just glorified obstacles in Dagon's case). But Mankar gets two flunkies who revive a few seconds after getting killed, making his battle just a little more interesting. But not by much.

Truth be told, best boss in the series I would say is probably Almalexia from Tribunal. She has a lot of HP, hits hard, has spells that cover the range of the whole chamber where you fight her, and more than anything, [censored] is fast! You really can't afford to stand still in this fight, making it especially intense and more energetic than nearly anything else Morrowind had to offer. Plus, it's just damn cool when you're fighting a living god wielding Hopefire while using its sister sword Trueflame (and claiming both at the end).

In the end, however, I think Bethesda needs to seriously look at games with awesome boss fights and try to emulate them if they can. Shadow of the Colossus, Demon's Souls, those kind of things. I don't really care what form the bosses come in, whether they're human, elf, god, demon Daedra, dragon, golem , naked Nord, they should be a suitable challenge, and should ideally require a different approach than standard mooks to take down. Thus far, between MW, OB, and FO3, they haven't done particularly decent boss fights.

yet the tree proved to be a more challenging boss than mannimarco...

seriously, he was made out to be the voldemort of TES... everyone feared him... and we just walk up, smack him, and he's dead?

pathetic as hell, killing a deer was more of an accomplishment than defeating mannimarco.

Wouldn't it have been much cooler if there was like dead zombies all over the place, he holds up his staff (while looking like a lich) and a ghostly light shines, and suddenly all the bodies begin to rise and attack you?

In the fighters guild we had to neutralize the Blackwood company.
Don't remember there beeing a real "boss fight". But then again, I could be wrong.

Dissapointing: Dagon takes the win. Simply because I wasn't the one to beat him.

Best: I enjoyed going through paradise and getting to face Mankar Camoran. The fight may not have been that interesting, but the whole deal was pretty cool. At least I got to fight him :P

Not sure on bosses for Skyrim. I don't know the possibilities other than Dragons so I'll leave that one up to BGS.

Bosses: should be much more powerful, should have unique attacks, should carry unique items and I guess bosses should be easier to kill with some skills than others, but that depends on resistances and their abilities.

Dagon was very disappointing. But at least he wen out in a kinda cool way.

Mannimarco was super disappointing in vanilla OB. I voted him best however going by modded OB with the Mannimarco Revisited mod. God bless the modding community.

Hoping with the revamped combat, there will be more real bosses and they are fun to kill. They of course should be tougher and have unique attacks (otherwise they are just regular baddies with more HP).

Bosses having their own music would be great too. I mean, so many other games do it, and boss battle tracks can be some of the best music in games.

I found all the "bosses" in Oblivion to be quite dull.

None of them even offered the same difficulty as a couple of high level ogres.

Modded Oblivion is not Oblivion. The poll refers to the actual original game, not user made mods.

Uh actually, modded Oblivon is still Oblivon. Mods add to the game, not change it into another one. Anyway, felt like giving the mod some free advertising :P
Can't blame me, after all I hardly even remember the last time I played OB without mods

But going by original, I'd say Manimmarco and Dagon are tied. The only reason Dagon isn't ahead of that is because you at least get to kill Manimmarco yourself.

Dagon was a big disappointment. You barely got to fight him. Akatosh did most of the work.

Umaril was a challenge :) Especially for stealth classes - I really enjoyed that.

But in general, boss fights should be more... Personal, and the bosses should have really annoying unique abilities (I remember there being a boss in a mod where he couldn't die, but you'd have to knock him out, then disable the artifact that was granting him immortality. And directly before him, there were hordes and hordes of minions to soften you up... That's what I want more of. But then, the reward received must be worth the challenge, too :)

Well obviously it wouldn't be reffering to mods or you'd get people answering completely differently based on what Mods they have.

True enough. Though there would be a lot less "bosses svck" responses :P

Ok I've had my fun. Like I said before, Mannimarco and Dagon are tied for most disappointing, and I'm hoping bosses are unique and challenging in Skyrim (as in actually bosses and not bigger enemies with more HP).

Can someone help me refresh my memory, who was the gate keeper in Oblivion because i can only think of one guy and that can't be it because he was just like a daedric soldier like the rest

Umaril was a joke he was suppose to be this crazy king who came back, 10 hits with dawnfang and hes dead, that was a dissapointment, i don't consider Dagon a dissappoinment and i thought it would be stupid if we fought him because i mean he was a giant, we came up to his big toe, no human could of killed him so i liked that we just watched the animation take place
