Exactly. Everybody make sure you have 15 cents on you when you go down there or you will get trapped, and for a little karma boost take an extra nickel to give to poor old Charlie so he can get off that train too.

Would be great if it was functional, and you found out when you suddenly noticed a loud noise and bright light rushing towards you as you walked through the tunnels.
Also, would be fun to lead enemies into the train's path.
I liked the metro a lot actually. I would like to see it again, though I think I would like it even more if it was connected to the outerworld without a load screen. That way you can explore it and any cave-ins you could look for and find the cause above-ground. Just an idea though.
I despised the metro, mostly because of how many times I had to go through them, the enemies now gone, the 'mystery' now dead. It was such a time waster that I was glad I found most of the locations in DC, so I can just FT and avoid the damn things (or at least try to).
It's not necessarily a bad idea to add one, but FO3 has made me veeeery wary of Bethesda's metros. FO3 was 60% train tunnels, 30% rubble blocks. I don't want to be forced to spend all my time in there, especially if every single part of it is going to look identical.
Yes I would like metros back but I'd also like to see some changes.
Every time you enter the metros, Ghouls respawn thus giving you a sense of fear/terror when you enter them.
Have the metros be interesting and not just, that's the same looking metro as the other one.
Have Rads be in some of them, giving a Vault 34 type feel to them.
Have the metros not be lit well, giving that horror feel to them.
There should be a hidden settlement in the Metros that you could find much like the ghoul place in Fallout 3 but not necessarily inhabited by ghouls.
We could pretty much confirm that it won't be dark in them if Skyrim is any indication.
I'd veto the first suggestion in a heartbeat. Exiting/entering a metro should not instantly respawn all enemies. There needs to be a period of time that it would still not be populated. Furthermore, I think it would be better to not have it just be Ghouls. There should be a list of possible spawns such as:
Nothing at all (even when it's "respawned")
Feral Ghouls
Raiders
Super Mutants
Radroaches
Friendly Ghouls
Friendly Wastelanders
Brotherhood Paladins
Robots of various models
Deathclaws
And these spawns shouldn't necessarily be mutually exclusive. I don't expect 30 Deathclaws to be inhabiting a metro station at any given time. But imagine how scary it would be to think you're safe because you found some friendly Ghouls and all of a sudden you find a Deathclaw in the next room. Or stumbling on a cadre of Super Mutants engaging raiders in a fight.
The more dynamic and varied the trips into the tunnels could be, the better. Granted there'd still be some limitations. You wouldn't find raiders or wastelanders in the radioactive tunnels, so the chances for Ghouls and Super Mutants would go up.
I absolutely loved the D.C. Metro in Fallout 3, so I'd certainly welcome a sprawling metro system in Fallout 4.
But if there's one in Boston then it wouldn't make any sense not to include it, so this should be promising!
The deeper you go, the better the loot, yet greater the danger.
