Bow and arrow really should be a weapon..

Also, and correct me if I'm wrong here since you know a hell of a lot more about this than me, but wouldn't using the programming from Oblivion, even if it were legal, mean you'd need accees to the source code, which we don't have. All we have is the construction set editor right? Am I on the right track here?

Technically speaking the code to run bows and arrows may still be in the engine, or the arrows fired may simply be a regular object that uses havok physics to simulate flight-decay? I don't honestly know. From a legal standpoint, if they left the code in the engine and if we can access it via the GECK, then it's legal to use. It's the content that must be New Vegas-specific or home-spun by a modder, nothing from Oblivion or Fo3 (that didn't transfer to FNV) can be used in New Vegas mods. What we don't have are the Animations for players and NPCs to shoot bows - those are Oblivion-specific and can't be used. This makes Crossbows a logical mod-target as they can be wielded like some guns, and modders can use existing animations to make them work. Given that we already have one crossbow mod made, I have to assume it will also be possible in New Vegas using animations from NV for guns that are held and fired in a similar-way. It won't likely look quite-right unless someone makes an animation for them, but they will still work.

It's a lot of work to be sure...

I agree. We need a bow and arrow in the game.

The skill related to bow and arrow would be Melee, as that how hard a bow hits is related on your strength, and how hard you can pull it back. similar to a throwing spear.

Also, does anyone know if you can recover your throwing spear after you throw it? because lord knows if I sink a throwing spear into someone, I'm going to retrieve it after they are dead.

The same would apply to the bow and arrow. if you kill your target, you can go and retrieve the arrows. Also, if you feel like wasting the time, you can retrieve any arrows that missed.

I also think it'd be great to be able to modify your arrows using various schematics. For instance, grenade + adhesive (tape, rope, whatever) + shaft = explosive tip, poison + arrow = poison arrow, blunt object (say some kind of item found in the wild, like a thimble or something) + arrow = blunt tip, etc.

Not to mention bow and arrow = stealth players dream (I LOVE stealth) if you play your cards right, you could wipe out an entire enemy camp without being detected.

Also, it's not too late. Sure it's almost definitely not in the retail game, but weapons are something DLC is good at :) I would totaly buy a DLC that gave us bow and arrows, cross bows, new spears (trident? pitchfork?), and maybe even like.. a whip.. or a snare (- to movement speed?) or something... man.. that would be awesome!

simply by having a bow and arrow as a weapon... their would be a whole new roleplay potential to be had...

WILD MAN OF THE DESERT!

I could totally play that kind of character. Id live in a cave, eat wild animals, and hunt stray travellers.

I hope a bow is in the game.

Archery would actually open a new can of worms for nitpickers to b!tch and moan about. Let's say you put bow and arrows in the game. Well, a whole new "archery" skill is justified in being implemented because shooting a bow and arrow is nothing like shooting a gun. So let's say you let the "firearms" skill dictate how good you are with a bow and arrow - well, then all the nitpickers come out of the woodwork and scream "THAT MAKES NO SENSE!" So instead, let's say you have a brand new "archery" skill - well, then all the nitpickers still come out and say "THAT'S A USELESS SKILL, THE STATS ON THE BOW AND ARROW svck AND THERE'S NO POINT IN TAKING THE SKILL! THE DEVS WASTED THEIR TIME!" So let's say you not only implement the skill, but you also have a whole slew of different bows and arrows to make that skill viable - all the nitpickers climb over each other to scream "THAT RUINS FALLOUT BECAUSE FALLOUT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT THE GUNS! WHY DID THE DEVS WASTE THEIR TIME WITH THIS WHEN THEY COULD HAVE GIVEN US MORE GUNS AND MELEE WEAPONS?!"

It's a big catch-22 that is going to result in the devs not being able to win no matter what they do. The closest thing they could perhaps try is a primitive-looking crossbow along with crossbow bolts - they had the "Railway Rifle" in FO3, after all. Otherwise, I suspect that the best thing you could do is ask the modding community to make your wish come true.

Yeah, or you could just completely ignore my post, in which I stated they could tie it to melee weapons, as pulling a bow back is related directly to strength, just like melee skill is. sure people could argue the bow isn't a melee weapon, but I disagree. it's no less a melee weapon than a throwing spear.

However, if there is a "thrown" skill again, then it would probably fit better into that. but I'm going to assume the throwing skill is out. Also, I really do think you're exaggerating. I think the majority of people would be happy with a bow. The ultimate stealth weapon at any range, damage easily comparable to a gun, versatile (different projectiles) AND it has virtually limitless (retrievable) ammo! The only serious drawback would be at super close range, you wouldn't be able to use it (little to no damage), so thats when you whip out your CQC weapon :D Even more reason to tie it to melee!

Nah, didn't ignore it. I figured it would be rather obvious that there would be multiple arguments of "Archery is nothing like melee combat!" Sure you found a way to justify it, but it still wouldn't fly with a lot of people.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the devs COULD add bows and arrows in an expansion/DLC, though. There would probably be less grumbling over optional content not apart of the "core" game.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11454 added a crossbow to Fallout 3, though I can't say I've tried it. There are 38 endorsemants and this leads me to believe that it has to work somewhat well. The pictures look pretty good. :)

I don't see any reason why this couldn't be added to New Vegas, and if they work well, then any kind of bow. The flight mechanics may not be there for that nice, arcing shot that we had with the Oblivion bows, I'd have to try this crossbow mod out to be sure. But at least it's been done!

Question is; why didn't they add these to New Vegas? Is it against the Canon? It's curious...

This is a Stalker Asset he did not create it also the weapon is not animated, it used the stock FO3 Anims.

Certain Parts of the Oblivion Bow and Arrows code went into Grenades as they still function almost identically with one glaring exception that the ammo is the weapon vs being seperate -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qMwradWw3Y, and with FONV bring back the ability to change Ammo a Bow and Arrows is even better implemented into FONV. the real question being is the AttackThrow Animation still locked functionaly into the 1GT weapon set because if it is the bows will have to be Bow/Arrow instead of Bows and Ammo/Arrows again.

Yeah, honestly, I don't see them being in the retail game. I was under the assumption that it would almost *have* to be DLC to be in NV.

But really, I wouldn't expect everyone to agree with bows and arrows being melee, but as you said, having a specific skill for it just wouldn't work. So they'd have to incorporate it somewhere. As i said, if they still have a throwing skill like in 1/2, the bow/arrow could fit into that category.

But no matter how you look at it, if they put bows and arrows into the game, I'm sure they'd find a suitable way to incorporate it without overcomplicating the skill list. that and, a LOT of people would LOVE playing with bows and arrows, no matter what skill it required :P

Yep. Don't get me wrong: I wouldn't mind them implementing bows and arrows into the game at all. I was just explaining why the developers need to be cautious in the way they implement them. :disguise:

There's no reason for bows not to be in the game, I mean, they added throwing spears...surely they would have added bows and arrows. It's a simple device and one that isn't simply lost. Crossbows would be a welcome addition as well.
I also don't see a point to reiterate what has already been mentioned, all I have to say is that I would love to see Bows and Arrows for this game, and various other ways to kill people without having to use guns or explosives. Maybe more exotic ways.

Meh, don't want it, no reason why it couldn't be implemented i guess, my suggestion, somebody contact a modder right away

You're forgetting us..... <_<
THE CONSOLE PLAYERS :brokencomputer:
You think everybody plays F:NV with PC?
No! You're forgetting all the console players out there!

There's no reason for bows not to be in the game. It's the same engine as FO3 and TES IV....
The heck with Oblivion with Guns! The heck with " It's not Fallout!"! The heck with trolls!
I don't care! It is possible! The possibility is great! But i don't guarantee they will add it to the retail version....

Very doubtful they'll add a skill for it in a DLC though.
Maybe arrow-based weaponry should be with the Survival skill...
But that might make it too powerful when compared to other skills.

Well, because i don't have any bucks (dollars), i'm still a teenager, my parents didn't want me to handle dollars yet...
I only have my national currency, Rupiah (Rp) in my wallet (Rupiah (roo-pee-yah) is the currency of my country, the Republic of Indonesia.)
and, my console is not connected to the internet... :sadvaultboy:

Hmm. Ask them really kindly for the money and do some chores.
You have internet at home, disconnect it from the computer and then connect it to the xbox.
Upgrade to silver account.
Reconnect it back to computer.
Go down to local video game store and ask to buy Xbox Live Points, they'll pull out a box with a card in it.
Go back home.
Reconnect internet to xbox.
Go to game marketplace.
Find the DLC.
Go to the DLC page.
Click x (add microsoft points)
Choose Redeem Code.
The card you purchased at your local video game store has a series of numbers and letters.
Type them in.
Now you have points.
Download the DLC.
Done.
:)
Not that hard to do.

As long as the bows aren't like they were in Oblivion, can use Vats effectively with the bows, and you can use weapon mods to add an explosive arrow at the end then sure add them in. My only problem though is how would it work with the ammo crates it would be weird to open up an ammo crate and find arrows in it.

I'm not sure about this. I mean the Bow system in Oblivion was passable in terms of animation and aiming and the like, but it's usefulness in battle was questionable. Sure you could score extra sneak damage on a far away target and maybe stick a few more arrows in them as they close in, but unless you were attacking from some higher, unreachable position or you were trading arrow shots vs another archer, you almost always had to fall back on your close range sword/blunt/unarmed skill to finish off the fight.

In Fallout, VATS will make bows and arrows a bit more interesting and you should be able to get a lot more range from an arrow than say a thrown spear, plus it should not give away your position like gunfire would. I guess it would all depend on how it was implemented. Bottom line is do it right or not at all...

Well some combat skills are better than others, will always be that way.
But if they have bows, then they could have those mad max weapons as well, which are the final tier.
