Bows and arrows VS. Dragons

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 6:25 pm

Hi there,

I have made a Thief/Silent killer character - Khajiit, and I am really struggling to kill even a single dragon. Since this character is solely Stealth, I find it insanely difficult to slay that flying abomination. I have no issues dueling a dragon with my other two characters, Battlemage and pure Mage.

Need your people's expertise and thorough guidelines, I really need to make a kickass Stealthy character.

Thanks!

my assassin does fine i make and use lots of poisons but just use the enviroment to take cover from his breath, and the slow time while aiming perk helps

I do fine even without poisons. Make sure your archery is up, and that you're using a good bow. I recommend smithing and enchanting one.

I can't help but feel like archery is the easiest way to kill a dragon. Just keep your distance and keep shooting.

What exactly are the problems you've had?

hey all, thanks for the quick response...

My Khajiit is at a very lower level 3-6, the real challenge is when it lands, while fighting it off, I really feel weakened when battling...

berserker rage sneak shot + poison is how i creep upon unsuspecting lizards.

Also a companion helps in earlier levels :foodndrink:

Actually archery is one of the easiest ways to kill a dragon, but make sure your archery skill is pretty high.

Archery can do it. I've only taken perks in Archery up to the zooming ability, and likely will use no more, because I'm primarily a tank, but the bow is useful for getting the dragon to land where I can smack it in the chops until it dies.

I like to find a wall, boulder, tree, pillar, etc... and hide behind it and shoot arrows at the dragon between its breath attacks (at low levels on master anyway). It's really a game of hide and scream like a little girl and plink him with an arrow (2 is risky) when you can. It also helps to throw out a summon (conjure familiar is fine) just to be the DDD (designated dragon dinner) while you shoot a few extra arrows.

It's a long arduous process early on but with better bows, and archery perks, it speeds up a lot. Also get Marked for Death asap, I'm not 100% sure but it seems like the debuff stacks with itself if you spam it every time it's up.

only issue i have with my stealthy/archer build is the breath weapon. if i fail to engage a dragon near cover, it is sure to burn me down fast. Call of Valor shout works well.. as does the spectral assassin or the animal ally shout even - when you discover them. Heck, just hire a companion and boost up their defenses/resistances. You really only need to keep the dragon distracted long enough to shoot it a few times.

Yea basically use cover, use alot of poison, use shouts, and when the dragon lands, a poisoned shot to the head. Rocking 'em with my orcish bow and steel arrows :>

Everything is a little challenging at first, starting up a ninja archer - but I got through it, even without using poisons.
Right now, at lvl 44, my Daedric Bow (Exquisite) with Fire enchant, dealing 138 damage kills a Blood Dragon with 5 shots using Ebony arrows ^_^

I play a stealthy character and his armor rating kinda svcks at the moment. He's a breton and I use the Lord's Stone so his resist is at 50%, that seems to make a big difference against their breath. Basically I just run around shooting them with a bow, when they land I pull out two swords and run in, then I just hold down the power attack until my stamina is out, drink up a bunch of stamina potions (although this does feel like cheating :P), hold down on the power attacks, by the time my stamina is out the second time the dragon is usually dead or near death.

  • Find a pillar or large rock that you can easily move around from.
  • Get plenty of arrows.
  • Keep pillar between you and the dragon until it starts to hover.
  • Shoot an arrow before the breath starts and another in between breaths.
  • Repeat until dragon lands and kill it before it gets to you.

Keep your back free, like against a rock wall or some big cover, but do make sure you can back or move away if it lands and tries to get you.
Improve your archery skill and damage, through the skill tree, armor or both.
Get some decent arrows and a good bow.
If you can, get some fire resistance through armor or potions. Frost or cold resistance from frost dragons.
Restoring health magic ability is not bad at all, as the dragons can quickly drain your health.

Once the dragon is down, you can attack it by other close combat weapons if you wish, but keep away from its jaws.

There are many ways to slay a dragon, but I have found that with the above, its' hard to fail.

If you have problems finding cover, level 1 ethereal shout works, especially if you have the necklace and talo's blessing. Arrow and magic attacks continue to do damage while ethereal.
