Bows! and their new abilities

Can we please NOT do V.A.T.S or its equivalent?

The developers don't have to implement VATS to implement limb damage.

I don't know if it's actually possible, but if you can turn the bow sideways and shoot double arrows like Legolas, that would be a great master level perk.

As someone who does archery in real life, I have to say that this is [censored] (I couldn't think of a more politically correct term, you'll have to excuse me). I have a love-hate relationship with archery in TES games, but one thing that is true is that a person could indeed withstand being shot with several arrows before dying. Now what I am talking about is not long term, if you pierce a man with an arrow (as in all the way through) he most likely will not die instantly, I'm not saying that an arrow in the gut would still allow him to live to an old age of 100 (not that it would effect much if modern medical applications were to apply to it), but even with your throat slit (an extreme) you can still keep on fighting for quite a while. Back in the day when bows were an "effective military tactic", their primary role was not to kill the enemy, but wound him so that either it will weaken one side greatly or other men have to drag him off the field. If you were to shoot somebody with a bow, I have almost no doubt that they will become quite enraged and charge at you with intent of aggressive retaliation. Even quite severe wounds are survivable if not only for a matter of minutes, which is all one needs to do harm to his attacker. To put into perspective about how strong the human body is, there was report of one police officer who was shot through his eye at close range, the bullet entered his brain and hot gunpowder burned his other eye rendering it useless. The blind officer fell to the ground, drew his weapon and fired his entire magazine into the attacker (which died) and lived to tell the tale. Now, you might be saying "But you said the body was tough, how come the attacker died?" to which my response is "the question was why does it take several arrows in a game to kill a person instead of just one, and in this example the officer was shot once and didn't die, the attacker was shot 6-10 times depending on the gun, if anything the video game results are quite on par with reality".

tl;dr: people don't just die instantly from getting shot by one arrow, the game presents results close to reality.

Interesting points there. Maybe arrows should have a slower drain health damage rather than being really strong. Although I don't think Bethesda is suggesting them to be quite as strong as it sounds like. I think they just want them to be strong enough so that a sneaking headshot will almost always be enough to kill them, at least at a higher skill level, not that every arrow shot would be a 1 hit kill.

Possible yes, very plausible, no. The person would have to be very close for you to even have a chance of hitting him with both arrows.

I dont really buy the "arrow scarcity" thing though. All it takes is knowing where to get them or having enough money. I mean, there will obviously be a way around this, unless it literally limits the number of arrows you can carry, which I wouldnt be opposed to.

To me it depends. They have to 'fix' some things like how you could find a person practicing with his bow and you could literally grab his arrows as he shot them. You could also dodge bandit arrows (hopefully not anymore) and pick them up. So if they lower the available amount in stores and make so enemies actually run out of arrows it could be tough.

It sounds like their trading some of the dice rolling thats now become a large staple of RPGs( But not synonymous just as Islam and Arabs/Africans or Desert culture and adaptations.) for a bit more realism along with Bethesda saying they'd added depth of the brutality brought by violence and overall more visceral combat which isn't a bad thing when your doing stealth like things rather than fighting a mini/boss, etc.

does that mean I will be a one-hit-kill for any archer in the game as well?
Better learn to dodge.

Also, you shouldn't be ableto just stand there with your arrow drawn while you get slashed it. It should knock your aim and release the arrow.

I want to hit someone with an Arrow at curtain places around his Body and he should react to it, not die from hitting him in the Foot or Hand or Elbow or Leg.

Death Kills should be when you hit him in the Head or Stomach.

The same goes for Beasts and Animals, are we Seriously gonna kill a 30 Foot Dragon with One Shot Kill.

something I'm curious about with archery in Skyrim, is how they mention that there will be a "hold breath" feature like sniping in cod. Does this mean that your shots will fly true? I like having some arc in my archery, lol.

The above isn't entirely representative of common reality either. It's easy to find an example (the cop story) where "X" happened. Or where the opposite happened... I've brought down large whitetails almost immediately -- within several steps -- of hitting a critical kill zone. I think it's important that the system plays on circumstances such as stealth (i.e. lack of adrenaline coursing through your enemies viens), locational damage (i.e. hitting someone in the leg won't kill them), etc. And a little bit of "artistic license" thrown in for good measure, if it makes the game play better.

Reality for me is variety of outcome.

Stomach is not a good example. Animals -- and people alike -- can live a long time with a gut shot.

I think arrows should have limb damage bonuses but such bonuses should be massively reduced (or even removed) against heavily armored enemy or thick skinned enemy to stop tough enemy becoming easily assassinated. That said, only really head shots should be able to instant kill, chest shots should incur "bleeding" damage, leg shots should reduce speed and arm shots should weaken attacks. A bit like in fallout 3, tho not exactly the same and of course without V.A.T.S, tho even in Fallout 3 you didn't need V.A.T.S to do any of that, it just made it easier...

I also hope we have multiple levels of zoom. Sometimes, the zoom in TES 4 just wasnt far enough for those really awesome long distance shots

EDIT:

When re-reading this post, it sounds kinda stupid...i dunno

Possibly.... just possibly, because I can't remember zooming in oblivion, other then then zooming out into 3rd person what I don't think is the kind of zooming you are on about. It's unrealistic to zoom because bows don't have scopes, so how do you zoom? Anyway, Draw Distances are increased in Skyrim what should make longer ranged shoots easier. Also, I assume like Oblivion, in Skyrim arrows will be applied to gravity, meaning long ranged shoots will require you too shoot above the actual target where if you were zoomed, you wouldn't be able to see what you were shooting above.

Check this link - OP says anywhere from 12 to 80 - so chances are we will be able to carry somewhere within these amounts.

i read on game informer that bows were now going to be one-hit kills. or at least in some cercomstances.
this would just be incredible because i always wanted to be an assassin with a bow .

This would be awesome. Shooting arrows in Oblivion was terrible. Maybe some arrows could also be poisoned.

While it is easier to kill enemies now, arrows are now more scarce and more expensive.

I hope they have body damage like Fallout. So if your going after a higher level enemy, you first shoot him in the the leg too cripple him to get more time to line up a headshot.

i doubt they wouldn't add locational damage after fallout. They just need to revamp it a little.

Disarming your opponents with an arrow would be awesome.

What would be really awesome is if they made it so piercing certain parts of their armour deals more damage, so that, against heavily armoured foes, you needed to pierce their throat, eyes, armpits, etc. in order to get a 1 hit kill.
