Boy Mods And Girl Mods?

Post » Fri Feb 11, 2011 3:21 am

I was curious earlier to notice that despite the game being 8 years old, I still get vastly more downloads even for my newer Morrowind mods than I do for any of my Fallout 3 mods.

Out of curiosity, I wondered which types of mods were getting the highest numbers of endorsemants and downloads, and found that they were mods that I personally wasn't terribly interested in. They might be great mods, but they're just not exciting for me.

One thing that was always apparent for me with Morrowind was that there was about a 50/50 split of men and women modding for the game, and that the men tended towards "war" mods (weapons, armour and balance) whereas the women tended towards "peace" mods (companions, houses and dialogue) - both as users and makers. There seemed to be some sort of primal division between the male fantasy of "survive against nearly impossible odds", and the female fantasy of "turn a harsh environment into a cozy home".

That's not to say it was absolute - there have been great female armour-makers and some fantastic house mods made by boys - but then again, the houses made by boys tend to be plain and functional, and the ones made by girls tend to be pretty and cluttered.

Also, though quite a few Oblivion modders have crossed over to Fallout 3, not many house modders did and if they did, they didn't stick with it. FORE was closed "due to lack of interest" because of the central premise of this post: the houses made by particularly female, particularly ex-Elder Scrolls modders are not the type of mods that are interesting to particularly male, particularly ex-Fallout players. Conversely, the mods made by particularly male, particularly ex-Fallout modders are of least interest to particularly female, particularly ex-Elder Scrolls players.

Those are sweeping generalisations, but I wondered how correct I was in my assumptions.

:edit: I'm not sure if the poll is functioning properly - if not, please just write your answers underneath.

Yeah, the poll doesn't work...

I'm female, over 20 years old and prefer combat/balance/weapons.

I still play Oblivion (and Fallout 1&2, Mass Effect,Morrowind, etc). I don't normally download armours because I have a zero tolerance for "chain mail bikinis", for me armour is supposed to be practical and protective, I also hate those silly "female shaped" briastplates. I do enjoy companion mods, when they are done properly, which is not the case for most of them, specially in Fallout 3.

I really don't think there are "Boy mods" and "Girl mods" but different people with different tastes.

I am male and prefer houses/companions/dialogue.

I like to organize my house, make sure I have at least enough food for a night for two, and all the little household matters that make a boring time a little brighter. Then I go blow somethings head off.

I'm male, older.

I tend to do house mods, a little of the quest, lots of focus on details... my bunker mod is in limbo while I work on the notes/etc for it to the point I'm happy...it will happen!

I tend to look mainly for tweak mods and make my own as I go as well (fix little problems or things that drive me nutz... PL npc bonus damage for example)

I don't know if there's a gender difference, I think it just varies from person to person.

I'm male, 19 years old and do mostly quest/dialogue related mods. These often result in combat though. On the other hand I also made the dialogue mod Gift4Kids so I guess I'm a bit of both types.

On a less related note, It's one thing to be able to create quests, which just requires a few good ideas and knowledge of the CS, but being able to balance a game is IMO a lot harder because you need knowledge of how everything works, and there isn't just one way to do it 'right'. For that reason I hold mods like FWE and Arwen's Realism Tweaks in high regard. I wouldn't be able to do it.

Female, over 20, and I prefer houses/companions/dialogue/etc mods :) I like weapons, too, but I don't like mods that add more enemies to the game as for me the vanilla one has already too many enemies.

Male, > 20, combat, balance, weapons etc.

I rarely even use themes for my house, but have gotten into decorating with the Feng Shui mod. Even then it's only trophies and reminders of what i have done and where i have been, along with some common sense decorations, like schematics next to the workbench, or medical clipboards on the wall next to the infirmary.

But i do want my characters, and the equipment they use, to look nice, which is why i refuse to use certain weapons and armor.

Male, 18 years old.

I have no preference but I like adventure mods the most. Too bad there really aren't any, so I gotta make them myself.
I like doing companion mods, but I never use them. I also used to get a load of gun/armor mods but I don't use them any more. I have never liked housing mods, because 99% of them don't make any sense lore-wise (personal vaults, for one) and the rest are located in bad places or are hard/time-consuming to reach. To be honest, the only mods I really "use" are mods that are integrated to the gameplay, such as FWE.

Only real rule I have with mods is that they have to be lore-friendly. Or, if not, well explained.
Currently my favorite mod is the one from NMA which adds Fallout 1/2 soundtracks to Fallout 3. It really boosted the immersion in FO3.

This poll == confusion for me unfortunately because I like:

combat/balance/army-of-companions

and it doesn't match either category listed!

hehe.

I male, 19 years old.

I usually have three or four at once being either male or female - I flip a coin truth be told.

I currently am using two characters -
1.)Male, Sniper Combat/Realism/Everywhere you turn an enemy
2.)Female, Politician Dialog/Realism/Everywhere you turn an enemy

Really it depends on the personality I want my character to have. My sniper has no soul and kills everyone basically good bad or just standing around, He drops them like flies. and my politician is on level three and I still have not had to pull out a weapon(that includes hand to hand) minus the part where you have to shoot the rad roaches. The only think that stays the same is I like danger and realism.

Hmmm,

Well, I'm female, over 20 and I like

mods that affect balance and combat and companions and dialogue and expanded areas......

I like them all, but in a pretty low key way. What I mostly like is to control my own game, so I download mods that only change an aspect of the game at a time that I want changed and then I DL a collection. I don't like a mod that changes too much or that makes me DL a whole pile of other mods to use it. I like FO3; it just needs to be tweaked IMO and I like to be in control of that tweaking.

But, I do follow your female typing, in that I find most of what has been done to companions to be lacking in the dialogue department, and I find most houses to be too sterile and combat centric or not aesthetically pleasing or really very house-like at all (not like your Pink Vault which is great) or if they are good they don't work with companions and the obsession with the Vault form is unfortunate (but understandable). And the mod I have chosen to create is a companion mod which emphasizes personality as much as possible and I would love to create more dialogue interaction of higher quality in other areas in the Wasteland, so ya, there you go. But then, I won't play the game without MMM and love it best with Increased Spawns and the great combat that comes out of it.

male
over 20

I tend to model/texture- outfits/character, various texture work, weapons, misc items, architecture, creatures. probably in that order

I download anything that is remotely technical, quirky, creative, quality relating to asset creation. < often in categories that I don't usually create in.

Male, under 20.

I don't really have a preference. I use more balance/weapon etc mods simply because there are more good ones than there are quests and locations.

Male, way over 20, guess I prefer combat/balance/weapons etc. if having to choose between the two options.

Always play female chars (after my first butt ugly male Morrowind char...)

One thing I like about Morrowind is that it has so many female modders, which gives it a very special feel when modding it out. You'll get the "typically female" Children of Morrowind as well as the "typically male" Morrowind Comes Alive, so to speak. Plus it gives the forum a different and nicer feel as well.

Hey, P_S, you b0rked the poll!

But yes, I'm still male, I'm still old (i.e. over 20) and I still like realism mods (which, I noticed, wasn't an option). I'm not big on "lots of overpowered guns and armour" mods, though new quests and new clothing are always nice (as long as they fit - I'm really not interested in seeing fantasy armour or something from the latest movie craze in the game).

This silly re-done forum (which I still dislike intensely) will not let me vote, even though I'm logged in and everything.

I'm an over-20 female, and I guess "I prefer combat/balance/weapons etc"; over "I prefer houses/companions/dialogue etc" (not great choices there, as I fall smack dab between the two).

My own mods mostly focus on improving role-playing and realism/immersion, which includes combat AI, stealth, weapons, skills, and armor improvements . . . but also makes ammo, weapons, and food loot more scarce, reduces blood and gore, reduces XPR, and improves lighting effects (PipBoy Light and my VisionFX). So these are the type of mods that I prefer (since I have spent hundreds of hours working on my own mods).

Fallout 3 was really the first game I actually created real mods for (although I did make a tiny little mod for Morrowind, and I worked with Duke Patrick in helping on his SCA Combat Archery mod, for Oblivion).

Female, over 20
I'm an equal opportunity mod lover. My games are filled with combat/weapon/balance mods as well as homes/companions/quests/aesthetic tweaks. If someone forced me to pick between the two categories in the poll, I'd have to quit playing. I can't choose.

Male, over 20

Female characters....... and prefer weapons, houses, and pretty clothes & hair. Which is kind of a split between your two categories.
My current install is FOOK2, WMK, Ling's Finer Things & Couture, and Green Green Hills.

(Same in Oblivion - my common mods are clothes/hair, houses, and scaling mods like Francesco's or MMM.)

And if I had an awesome graphics card instead of a svcky one, I'd add in "pretty world" texture replacer mods.

Male (way) over 20. Prefer balance/stat/quest mods. (not exactly what you asked, but since the poll doesn't work, I get to write my answer the way I like :P )

I agree with your broad generalizations, while acknowledging that there are exceptions on both sides. Probably more like two bell curves with a generous overlap in the middle.

I don't care for house mods. In fact, I don't even care for the attainable houses in the vanilla game. My characters never are home. They sleep (if they sleep!) outside, behind a tree, under an overhanging rock, etc.

I never play with companions. Although I have installed Baby Deathclaw Commander, because the line "Let's talk about how brave you are being!" was just too much for my cynical manly self, and I crumbled and succumbed to cuteness.

Quests are what interest me most. I love the complexity of the project. I love thinking about player choice and how to account for it. I love smarts, and smarts is most apparant to me in a good quest mod.

Armor and weapons? I don't really care. I mean, give me some guns, some of which are better than others, but don't ask me to bother with learning their names and real-world equivalents and... See, I'm bored of that topic already.

Balance and stats - What I'm really talking about here are character stats. While weapon stats leave me cold, I can spend all day creating and planning new characters in Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick. Nothing more fun that that!

If you lump Dialogue in with quests, I guess I love it. If you lump it in with companions, I guess I hate it.

Male, (much) older than 20.

The poll options don't really suit me, since I use so many different kinds of mods. I usually try to stay with lore-friendly stuff, which limits my options a bit. My load order has pretty much every kind of mod on it. Realism, quest, weapon, balance, clothes etc. etc. etc.

Companion mods are sort of cool, but I tend to want to pick the time and place of my fights, and most of the companions are keen to aggro just about everything, so I don't use companions that much. NPCs also seem to lack the ability to jump and their pathfinding can be hilariously bad, which makes them even more of a liability.

House mods interest me in principle, but most of them seem to feature huge and well maintained houses that have no sane and realistic chance of existing in the Fallout universe, so I skip most of them. I tend to like gritty and small scale houses if I use one. The last house mod I've used was one I made myself, basically by just adding a mattress and some sandbags to the VAPL-58 Relay Station, which has a nice view to the surrounding valley.
