Out of curiosity, I wondered which types of mods were getting the highest numbers of endorsemants and downloads, and found that they were mods that I personally wasn't terribly interested in. They might be great mods, but they're just not exciting for me.
One thing that was always apparent for me with Morrowind was that there was about a 50/50 split of men and women modding for the game, and that the men tended towards "war" mods (weapons, armour and balance) whereas the women tended towards "peace" mods (companions, houses and dialogue) - both as users and makers. There seemed to be some sort of primal division between the male fantasy of "survive against nearly impossible odds", and the female fantasy of "turn a harsh environment into a cozy home".
That's not to say it was absolute - there have been great female armour-makers and some fantastic house mods made by boys - but then again, the houses made by boys tend to be plain and functional, and the ones made by girls tend to be pretty and cluttered.
Also, though quite a few Oblivion modders have crossed over to Fallout 3, not many house modders did and if they did, they didn't stick with it. FORE was closed "due to lack of interest" because of the central premise of this post: the houses made by particularly female, particularly ex-Elder Scrolls modders are not the type of mods that are interesting to particularly male, particularly ex-Fallout players. Conversely, the mods made by particularly male, particularly ex-Fallout modders are of least interest to particularly female, particularly ex-Elder Scrolls players.
Those are sweeping generalisations, but I wondered how correct I was in my assumptions.
