[WIPz] Brand new Dwemer tileset

Here are a couple teaser pics of the new Dwemer tileset I am making. I needed a break from the sewer tileset.

Theres just not a lot of lore concerning dwemer architecture (at least that I could find) so I had to come up with my own interpretation. Bethesda's dwemer set has to be the worst one in the game, incredibly crude and devoid of personality. The glimpses Ive seen of Skyrim's treatment of the Dwemer leads me to beleive that they will actually try to do them justice this time around.

I went with the 'steam elves' theme in my design here. The metal faces are an idea I borrowed from some Skyrim concept art. The dwemer have no gods so they kinda worship themselves...Im trying to mix ancient medieval/fantasy designs with something akin to a steampunk factory. The set will be extensively ruined when I am finished, most of what you see here is the basic undamaged version. Also, I plan to make moving gears an integral part of the set. In the floors, on the walls, everywhere.

So, is my design too modern looking? Not Dwemer enough? Does it totally break lore?

Doesn't look too modern to me. I like it a lot more than the vanilla dwemer architecture actually, because it has so much more personality - which you were shooting for. Could do with a few pipes on the walls maybe. There isn't much lore on the dwemer architecture either, so it doesn't break anything really as long as its just mechanically themed and doesn't try to use modern looking metals for the textures.

Yes, I will make an extensive set of pipes of course. But I wont cheap out and make the pipes part of the architecture like the vanilla set. What sort of building is held up by pipes? Thats silly. The pipes I make will just be additions you add after building the structure. Should be all sorts of them too, curved and twisted.

More Dwemer stuf is always good :). Concerning the modernity of your designs I would say that two points would have to be considered:

1) Meshes
2) Textures

1) Dwarven architecture from vanilla MW is very round but does have some arch-type flavour so I don't think your placing arches in there goes against the grain. The only thing I would say that says "modern" to me are the heat-sinkish arches and that's a maybe. I think that since the Dwarves use steam engiens then heat-sinkish designs are valid.
2) The Dwarven palette is one of golds, browns, oranges(?). Silvery metal says "industrial age" to me so personally, I would colour them in a gold or brown but they're yours so if you think Dwarves would build such structtures then run with it. Bamz-Amschend is failry different to MW's architectural style so there's no way anyone can rule out multiple styles for the Dwemer.

Personally, I think ithey're great and remember, they have to be Dwemer in your eyes. Excellent work

Thanks for the input. :D

I plan to add bits brass/gold like the crown on the huge head throughout the set. Most of the mechanisms I make will probably be in those hues. I just dont like being surrounded by that one color, but I think it works well in small does with the other metals. At least I hope it does.

Just don't forget to put in lots of exposed piping!

This is pretty much what I'm thinking as if you release a set I'd like it to complement vanilla Dwemer stuff but of course the most important thing is that you draw out your creativity and I am definitely looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

It's not that important. When you look at Bamz-Amschend there are few parts that really have pipes, The Dwemer were able to cover them, at least if they wanted to (Heartfire Hall and most corridors). And their architecture can be decorative. What you see on Vvardenfell is a bunch of semi-industrial ruins. Now again look at the Heartfire Hall and notice the basics. Again we have a metal floor so this seems to be a common factor. Then the walls are made of the same slightly red stone. Or they use tiled granite like stuff (weather machine cell) and the have exposed support construction.

From that point of view the wall and design you showed here looks very dwemeric to me, yet the arches/pillars could be a little more massive and you should replace the golden texture on that deco element with a copper/eggmine metal style one.

^Illustrates the slight change I made to the support beams so now they create rectangular gaps rather than square. Also shows the scale, thats a breton down there.

Now, what if I also make a daedric set? I could imagine making a set of new dungeons that take over the old ones.

I think a daedric set could be a real treat to make, from my perspective theres almost limitless directions to go creatively, as long as it comes out looking twisted and alien.

How about a tileset made of bones and muscle? LOL, that would be awesome.

A bone tileset almost designs itself, even though its ridiculous. The doorways would be a massive skull with its jaws open, the columns would be huge femurs, the stairs could be fingerbones, and the ceilings could be ribcages.

Maybe I will. Would fit right into my long-ago idea to add a huge castlevania style dungeon in the game. I actually started on a baroque interior set back before I even knew what the heck I was doing, and I gave up when the stairs were nightmarishly difficult to create. I could build some in like three minutes now! Im on a tileset rampage someone stop me before I tile again!

Heck yes! Will make tilesets for food.

Ok, Im in a bit of a sharing mood so I will share what Im thinking. Ill just stop worrying about lore and making the set look 'dwemer' enough. Ill just focus on making it look cool. Besides, the big project I am working on isnt exactly the typical medieval fantasy setting either. I think making it look like an industrial age factory will do just fine, with perhaps some strange twists here and there to make it still feel like morrowind.
