Breach

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 7:58 pm

http://breachgame.com/ was released yesterday and I'm downloading it as I type this :P It's this new online FPS game by Atomic, which probably doesn't sound too exciting but it has a twist. You can destroy almost anything in the level you're playing. Walls and roofs are nothing if you're equipped with powerful enough weapons. It definitely adds a new element to the classic FPS action if you don't have find a a way past the wall to get to your enemy (because you can just blow it up)

I'll be posting my first-impressions of the game in a while.

anyone else interested in this game? if you buy it let me know and maybe we can play a match together or something

EDIT: oh I'm on PC, Steam, and my username is exorince5

I am interested but currently on very limited funds so I have not picked it up. I am interested in hearing how it is though.

I was about to get this on Xbox Live today (I love destructible enviornments, ever since the first Red Faction on PS2), but then I noticed it was multiplayer. Is there any singleplayer aspect at all?

Doesn't appear there is, however this is the same concept as Counter-Strike or Team Fortress though.

I considered it but on all the trailers the grenade launcher seemed very over powered. I also don't usually buy small name multiplayer games, since often times it will have a dead online community.

A few minutes into my first game I accidentally fired a rocket launcher at a house and it hit a wall, which collapsed and the balcony collapsed along with it, killing an enemy. B)

I started playing the trial on Xbox and thought it was meh. The controls confused me, the graphics seemed somewhat bland and the gameplay too slow. With some practice I'm sure I could get the hang of it and for an arcade game it looks really good. I'm probably just too used to Call of Duty, which probably explains why I thought it slow. :P

I didn't get to experience it much though as my net went down shortly into my first game. I've also yet to see the whole destruction thing in action.

I'll be giving it another shot, but I'm not really sure if it's for me. Seems fun if you like it though. :)

That's strange, I thought the gameplay was really fast... I played about 10 games last night and it was not unusual to kill someone 10 seconds after you spawn, then die 10 seconds later.

Anyway, my first impressions of the game are good-ish. I love the explosive gameplay and destroying bridges, buildings and whatnot is really fun. The graphics are good and I never noticed any framerate issues even with explosions going off all around me. Actually I think I'll just make a pros / cons list.

Pros:
  • fast paced and fun gameplay, never a dull moment.
  • Good graphics and no performance issues
  • The character / weapon customization is satisfying but not very extensive.
  • Latency doesn't affect gameplay very much, I never noticed it even on my crappy connection.
  • The perks and gadgets you get from leveling up aren't as overpowered as you'd think. They of course give you a certain advantage over the other players but it's nothing like, for example the helicopters in black ops
  • The "active-cover" system is really powerful

Cons:
  • The "active-cover" system is a bit too powerful if the player is behind a non-destructible object.
  • People are abusing the destructible environments by blowing up bridges and stuff early in the match to limit the fighting zone to a small portion of the map.
  • There aren't many maps, actually there are just 3 or 4. One of them has a Night version though. << The developers said they'd release more maps soon after the release.
  • Maps are imbalanced. If you know the layout you can easily find a spot where you can camp and kill everyone who tries to approach for as long as you don't run out of ammo.

Minor annoyances:
  • The mouse sensitivity settings are [censored], even on lowest settings it's still waaaayy too fast. It wasn't until I did some .ini tweaking that I managed to fix it.
  • Controls aren't very responsive, especially when you want to jump.

Im not going to get it. It just looks like a Bad Company 2 spin-off with a much smaller community.

It looked great until I saw the overpowered cover system. It's terrible for multiplayer games. It's like RSV2. 3rd person view and you can see around corners? Yeah, that makes sense. I guess the only thing that saves it is that you can blow up the wall they're behind.

*Shudder*
I seen this on a X-Ply review, they had the Dev ( I believe he was ) Looked pretty sweet, I would get if I had the internet connection to get live, and be able to play with no lag. I like that you can kill someone with a object that is destroyed ( your post said it was a balcony ) that is something they should include in Bad Company*.

* I don't know if this is in it, but I have never killed someone with a collapsing building in Bad Company.

I might give this a try, looks like it could be interesting.

Collapsing buildings kill anyone who is inside them in BC2. They usually have enough warning to get out in time though.

My friend and I would stick C4 all around the foundation of a building and blow it sky high whenever a group of enemies walked into it. Was [censored] awesome.

OT: Is there a good assortment of weapons in Breach?

I've clocked 5 hours in this game now and it's getting better. A quick look at the Breach forums showed that the devs are aware of the largest bugs and that they are working on it so we can probably expect a patch soon.

It's not the best online FPS I've played, but it's worth the 12$

No, not yet anyway.

OT: Is there a good assortment of weapons in Breach?

There are 3 different weapons for each class, and you can customize each weapon with 2-4 gadgets such as Reflex Sights, Grenade launcher (for the M4A1) or 2x Zoom Scope for the Sniper.

So that's 12 main weapons + a sidearm (Think it's the same for all classes) + handheld grenade launcher (gadget) + explosives

There are also some nifty gadgets you can unlock, like a laser-triggered bomb.

In-game you can also use mounted machine guns.

EDIT: Also, the game can be played in offline mode on a LAN server.
