Breakable Miscellaneous Items

Okay then, my concern for Skyrim regards miscellaneous items such as pottery, glass cups, bowls, and in general seriousness... BREAKABLE items.
What I mean by that is say you're in the town tavern or a shop, and usually, regarding Oblivion, the owner of the establishment has shelves full of random things that they sell and some of those things may include pottery, glass cups, stuff I mentioned earlier, and say you bump the items placed on the shelves, the items then fall to the ground and ends with a simple, "TING". What my idea for Skyrim is that the team at Bethesda make those items breakable if a certain amount of force is applied to it. For example, you can place say a "clay bowl" in your inventory, and carry it around like anything else like spare weapons and such, but if you drop it, and it hits the ground hard enough, it will shatter. OR, going back to being in a shop, if you accidentally break an item such as a "clay bowl", the shopkeeper will then approach you and ask you to pay for it, and maybe if you break too many of the shopkeepers items, they will kick you out of the shop for a certain amount of days. It would be very much appreciative if you guys could give me some feedback, and tell me your opinion on this topic. Thank you! :disguise:

this would certainly add to the realism of the AI, but i wouldnt want to them to kick me out of the shop, in my opinion it would be just fine if the items dont break and you dont get kicked out, but rather you just loose karma like in fallout.

That would be cool as hell lol. Eventually I would get sick of it though. After finding a nice set of silverware I don't want to have to break back into my neighbor's house to steal more (no way am I paying for a damn clay plate).

How is breaking something Bad karma, Karma is do good get good Do bad get Bad, if I bump into a table by accident and knock over pottery Im going to get bad karma and get mauled by wolves? a little extreme yes but surely you see were Im going with this Karma business especially the crap that Fallout 3 tries to pass off as Karma

I'm absolutely in favor of destructible environments, including miscellaneous objects. Though, it seems a bit grand for today's technology.

Not sure about this as clutter seems rather prone to behave erratically. If they were to fix Havoc so the items won't fly off (and disintegrate) the moment the player walks into the shop (or his own carefully decorated home *shudders*). Also they'd have to make it so items don't break by simply walking into their proximity. I recall other games where I swear bottles and stuff were breaking just by looking at them funny :P

So on the whole I'd rather keep my unbreakable pottery, so I'll be safe when something falls off my table that I've been decorating for the past hour ;)

i didnt mean karma like that, i meant it in the way that fallout did it, in where the npc's change their reaction to you depending on what you have.

you should get your character a daedric or ebony butt cover but alas we probably wont have the armor slots...

hopefuly npc react better to messing up there shop, a less invassive system than fallouts 'youve got mail' karma would be gud.

I'd only support breakable items if they don't go flying all over the place just by walking by them or touching them like in Oblivion.

No, it was bad enough in Oblivion when you walked into your home, bumped into the table, and started off a massive cascade of carefully (and very difficult and time-consuming) placed decorative items. I hope they have sorted this out for Skyrim, I'd rather have stuff being completely static and staying in the right place than bouncing around all over and getting broken. This is one area where I'd rather have less realism than more!

This is a tricky thing at best. See, in order to actually have an item break, it would mean a script has to activate, replacing the original mesh with the now broken item in its place. What sets off the script is a matter of argument, but the problem is, you'd need MULTIPLE new meshes (objects) for every single breakable thing in the game. The time it would take to create these would be astounding.

Well, in Oblivion there were metal table urns and silverware. If pottery and akin-breakables can shatter in Skyrim, it'd be an incentive to buy much more durable things for your home.

Fallout New Vegas had breakable bottles and glasses, perhaps Skyrim will follow suit. Then again, it's a feature of minor importance compared to all the things Bethesda's confirmed that they need to get right (like perks).

Look at Half Life 2, you break a piece of wood and then you can actually break it further, wait for it, you can litterly break it again. :D

I love how realistic it can go, you can even write your name on a wall by shooting at it :P

I heard that the AI will react on if you pick up and smash objects in shops, for example cast a fire ball on a table and make everything sly around the place would make them angry or something

Nice idea. I remember during the Fighter's Guild quest in the shop in Oblivion I ended up fighting one-on-one with no potions left over, so I drew circles around the table to avoid the robber's claymore and even threw some of the pots on the table at him to distract him :biggrin: . It would be all the more memorable if our strikes actually shattered what was on the shelves and table.
Also, the loud noice could be implemented as a distraction in stealth.

I must say that is a good idea in theory but terrible in practice, sure it adds realism, and who doesn't like to break stuff? But think about how careful you would have to be about moving around indoors and gently placing everything down so as not to break it, that would add a whole new level of tediousness.
