I broke down and bought the house and Whiterun since I'm not certain how to get houses elsewhere yet, and I really needed a place to store my stuff. After purchasing the house, the bed shows up as owned and as such I cannot sleep in it. I thought maybe buying the bedroom furnishing would fix it, but no. I still cannot sleep there.

Anyone else having this problem, or know of a solution?

Which bed, the double or the single? The single is for your housecarl, and the double works fine for me at least.

There are two beds in the Breezehome house when you buy it. The first one, at the top of the stairs in behind the door is for your servant, that's why it is owned. The other bed is upstairs on the far end and is a double bed by a chest. It can be easy to miss, but that's your bed to sleep on.

So, not a bug. Also, you can buy furniture for the house from the same person you bought the house from, but he MUST be in the throne room for the option to show up in his dialogue.
