A Breton and an Altmer walk into a bar...

Theoretically speaking, who would win in a fight? A Breton wizard or an Altmer wizard? Let's assume they have about the same knowledge of the schools of magic, except for what each race specializes in. Is one race truly superior to the other?

Depends.

Most likely the Altmer, due to a higher reserve of magic than a Breton, all other things being equal.

Unless the Breton can get some high-power elemental damage spells off before the Altmer sets up a resist element/magic spell, that is. Altmers are weaker against elemental damage (specifically Shock, Fire, Frost, and magic, with them weakest to Magic and Fire damage.)

No guaranteed win for either one.

Wizard against wizard, Breton for sure. For a simple reason, Bretons have a huge resistance to magic while High elves are the opposite, having a weakness to destruction, which a pure mage would have.

I would say the opposite.
An Altmer wizard isnt worth his salt if he doesnt counter his weaknesses with enchantment or spell.
I always play an Altmer and I know thats what I do lol.
Bretons may have bigger innate resistances but an Altmer is more intelligent and comes from a more magically inclined culture.
Therefore his grasp of magic would be bigger.

I think it would depend on who is most experienced, most well versed in the arcane.
If these are both equal and on master level, the Altmer would win.
If they were both novices, the Breton would win.

But thats just what I think :)

An Altmer Psijic would crap all over any Breton.

Same skill level? I'm going to say breton. In terms of skills and potential, the altmer, due to the existence of the Psijjics. Let us put it this way, the Numidium had to be used to conquer Summerset Ilse. High Rock and Wayrest? Newp.

to an altmer, a breton is a mutated, regressed altmer. to a breton, he is an evolved altmer hybrid. evolutionarily speaking of course.

worth considering.

Depends on which mage summons the Dremora, and which one summons the Scamp.

To be fair, most of Highrock was a bunch of divided City States. Tiber Septim could've picked them off one by one whereas he had to face a united Summerset Isle and Valenwood.

And the bretons did defeat Camoran the Usurper, but I got the feeling it had more to do with brave knights than mages. Frankly, if an altmer and breton have the same skill in magicka, and it's known, then that altmer would be immediately exiled from Summerset at the very best.

More likely from good strategy and battlefield flexibility, which are owed to their constant state of warfare and saddle-bred horseman. We know they have great battlemages and nightblades - couple these with the knights you mentioned and the other factors, and you have something like Patton leading the Golden Horde, with knights and magic. Their fleets are also renown, but I don't remember if the Usurper used a navy...

Naw, he seemed to fight only on land, going from Valenwood and headed up north. And by brave knights, I mean more of the idea that they engaged more in physical combat than throwing lightening bolts. Wish the TES games put more shine into the breton knight image and such, instead of making them seem to be 50% mages, 50% misc.

In all honesty, if a Breton, and an Altmer have the same level of knowledge and skill in the Arcane, then the Breton is most likely a gifted middle-aged to very old man, whereas the Altmer is either very young, or would be considered the town drunk. :celebration:

Its not really fair to match up Men and Mer when dealing with magic. Elves get the benifit of looooooong lives to perfect any weaknesses they have, while the humans are scrambling to just learn what they can before they croak!

(All in all, I still find Bretons more fun to play in game, and RP)

In terms of gameplay I would guess Breton due to the high resistance, but I have a feeling that a skilled altmer would have a good chance at winning. If they have the same equipment and skill I'm pretty sure the breton would win.
