Well, from what I can tell, Bretons are not too fond of the empire, but the stormcloaks are not too find of anyone who isn't a nord. But it's up to you.

My Breton doesn't like either. She's staying neutral.

Just being a mage means that many Nords will be suspicious towards you. Being a Breton doesn't necessarily affect the choice of allegiance. Backstory?

It's all in the backstory. My Breton, Sam, was on her way to the College when she was accosted by legion soldiers because she just happened to be crossing the border at the same time some Stormcloaks were around so she's automatically assumed to be with them without being asked who she was or where she was heading. She's spiteful, so death to the legin except Hadvar. She was going all Stormcloaks until she got to know the Nords better. They are different from the Nords in Cyrodil (Bruma) and she gutted one for calling her a milk drinker. She's also in the thieves guild just because the nord nobles deserve to have their valuables pilfered and will be joining the dark brotherhood. Her follower is Marcurio, a fellow mage, who doesn't have a problem being a sword for hire. She's following through on the main quest because she's a mage and wants to see what is behind all this dragonborn stuff. She may or may not do the companions. She has plenty to keep her busy raiding dungeons, thieves guild, and the dark brotherhood.

I play multiple characters and specifically designed my breton mage to do the empire questline. Here's why:

- Being of partly elven origin and the stormcloaks being heavily racist to anyone who isn't a nord, but especially elves makes him more likely to join with the empire.
- The nords invaded and conquered highrock in 1E 264 and occupied it for 123 years - people usually don't their conquerors.
- Bretons - and especially this very character - is a magic user - traditional, nationalistic nords hate mages.
- Most Emperors of the third era were bretons and they are described to be generally supportive of imperial rule.

Seemed to be pretty obvious to me. On a side note, when playing with my nord character and joining the stormcloaks, I found the stormcloaks to be such a heavily racist bunch of bigots, noone but a nord would join them (except maybe some Thalmor agent joining them to further destabilize the empire).

Originally, they're derived from intermarriage between Aldmer and Nedes (which are men). The offspring would be called Manmer - later, they absorbed some Imperials and Nords living in the Area. They're certainly mostly human, but have some elven ancestry, which explains them being rather nimble and superior magic users.
