Felt like starting a random topic for laughs (I'z a bad bunni XD) so I wondered how the forumites would respond to the idea of Bretons having a French accent?
Why French? Because traditionally, the description of Bretons started as "Passionate and eccentric...". That has French written all over it for me :)

I don't care about the whats or the whys- but if we get an entire French-accented race, one thing must appear in the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8yjNbcKkNY

would that mean that imperials need to sound italian as they kind of represent the roman empire..

Italian??? If they were representing the Roman Empire, they'd speak Latin, not Italian. :P

I can't believe all the people here saying they need British accents (I assume that means a BBC English accent to most Americans?). The Bretons in TES are a fusion of Celtic and French cultures. For example, their names are French, but their background talks about highlanders, the claymore, and witch-kings such as are more reminiscent of Celtic cultures. An English accent would be better than an American one - that's always atrocious when it's used in a fantasy setting - but it would make more sense to give them a unique accent, maybe based on a low-key french lilt with some of its own phonetics thrown in.

Tl;dr: The Bretons are borrowed from France, not England, but a unique accent would be better than either of those.

Come on, people, that's like saying that all black people should have a Jamaican accent, or all people of Asian descent should have a Japanese accent...
Accent is not a product of your race, it's accrued from your parents, where you grew up, where you have been living and where you have traveled. You can't give a singular accent to any one race.

Also, using the phrase 'British accent' is so vague it's useless. You're including three countries in Britain to start with (Northern Ireland is not part of Britain before anyone pipes up again...), many different counties and even more dialects. Pick something a little more specific.

Bretons are supposed to have French names in Oblivion so... yeah of course!

It's been said that Lucien was originally supposed to be a Breton because of his surname... maybe, maybe not... his mum coulda been Imperial.

hope that wasn't too OT

I don't mind a more French accent - I always view the Nords as Scots not Vikings so they tend to cover the UK area accents for me - just please don't let the Bosmer sound whiny

I always thought the Dunmer had the best accents in Morrowind - they sounded alien

some differnet age voices would be nice as well - Morrowind seemed to have granny voices - Oblivion was a little better but not much - if the Bretons had a French sound I'd prefer hearing someone sounding like Marion Cotillard but not Gérard Depardieu please :)

Oh quit trying to be all cultural and understanding of demographics and using logic to show someones upbringings. Lets all have stereotypes and look from an ethnocentric point of view!:P This is mostly a joke thread to me anyways.

Its video game for peep-sakes.

Breton - French
Nord - German
Imperial - Italian
Redguard - Arabic
Orc - Russian
Altmer - British
Bosmer - Spanish
Dunmer - Jamaican
Khajiit and Argonian sort of have their own accents already.

There we go. Nobody needs to be bothered by American English.

As long as its not Canadian French.

Whats the difference? o.O

Breton - French
Nord - German
Imperial - Italian
Redguard - Arabic
Orc - Russian
Altmer - British
Bosmer - Spanish
Dunmer - Jamaican
Khajiit and Argonian sort of have their own accents already.

Whats wrong with American English? I happen to love it, especially Southern accents and Brooklyn. English English (ha!) sounds more poetic, but most American accents sound more 'warrioristic' a lot like German, and how it can just intimidate someone when spoken in a harsh tone. Southern accents are very different, in that it's even softer than a few accents i've heard in London. You would be amazed by just how many accents English has, there are 21 unique accents in the US alone for example, all whom have their own flair to them. You're not even getting into the more exotic 'unofficial' accents, such as Georgian, Alaskan, Hawaiian, ebonic, 'Mexican' (it's called about 50 things, but it's only spoken in Southern states- but it's a mixture between Mexican and English, and it has nothing to do with native tongue Mexican language as the vast majority of them are native to English)

Most movies, games, and such things of the like are done in either Mid-Western, or some sort of mixture whom have a very different pronunciation because the words are a little rough but are more easily understandable because of the distinctive sounds.

It's much like most people's understanding of German. Most people are only familiar with the dialect of Berlin while being oblivious to accents like Hessian, Austrian (i always get Austrian and Swiss confused)

No!!!!!!!'

The French accent is already used by Bioware in Dragon Age with the natives of Orlais and in that game it works (barely) but it doesn't sound entirely genuine with a French accent in a fantasy world. There's also the risk it will feel too "thought out" and clichéd, a bit too much like a Hollywood thing. So Bethesda please no.
