Just for the sake of interest the definition of 'gimmick' is:

Seeing as how Beth is a bit late to the party when it comes to introducing a VA to your AAA game I'm not sure what it's use as a 'gimmick' is. The ability to 'romance' your companions fits the definition better. As does all of advertising weirdly enough. Why do people have such an issue with just saying 'I don't like this change'? Your dislike of something does not need a wobbly objective basis for it to be valid, friends. You can just dislike it. No guarantees that anyone will listen to you when you whinge cuz it's preference based but this thing about trying to MAKE an objection objective just reeks of desperation.

That's pretty much exactly what it is, by your definition. Beth never needed it before, but now they add it to attract more non RPG gamers (they've been pandering to the lowest common denominator since Oblivion). A feature that does nothing but read lines of dialogue for you, while simultaneously limiting overall dialogue and role playing.

Or perhaps they wanted to do something different... it is, after all... their choice to make. Not yours, or mine. They are the developers, we are the consumers... We get what they create, and they have the freedom to choose what goes into the games. If you don't like it, you have the choice not to buy the game.

Doesn't seem like a spoiler...just a joke.

*edit*

I don't foresee this thread getting past page 2 if it turns into a flame war over voiced protags.

No [censored] it's their game.

Or maybe I just care more about Beth games than the Skyrim/Fallout 3 era come lately [censored] think they do. Maybe the dumbing down should stop.

So you know better than the devs themselves? I think the kneejerk reactions and the use of the phrase "dumbing down" should stop.

Heh. Post is at the bottom of the page. Should have said page 3, perhaps?

Well, it's on page 2 right now, if it makes it to 3 I'll be surprised.

I'd like to introduce you both to the concept of growing up and getting over it. You may not want it in an RPG but it's in, too bad for you. That's how the world works.

Fallacy.

However, I've watched the dumbing down for 15 years. Yes, I know when they are placating action gamers that smash their foreheads into their controller to get past dialogue so they can headshot more mutants.

Another shining example of why the age limit of this forum needs to be raised past 12 or 13 or whatever it is.

LOL at the post a meme/video generation that can't form arguments.

You mean like a business? A business, that by its very definition, likes to make money? That it gets by appealing to the largest possible consumer base? HUSH YOUR MOUTH BOI. I'll ignore how close this strays to 'tru rpgee gaimer' and a no-true-scotsman. That's a fallacy. You seem to like those so I'm assuming you're familiar with it and will never indulge in anything so gauche.

Question: was your dialogue not already limited in the unvoiced lines provided previously? For instance, if you wanted to say something funny but all the dialogue options are bland? Or you thought a dialogue option was sarcastic but the person you're talking to reacts seriously? Or you're rolling a logorrheic hustler but all the lines are short and to the point?

When the game does not give you options you play with motives instead.

Or perhaps change is not an acceptable thing in your view? Why change, evolve, or grow, when one can stay the same forever?

I really don't think there's anything spoilerific with that tweet.

As for voiced, I don't see it being an issue other then Forced Sole Survivor and RIP Alternate Starts. I'd be more concerned about the writing then Voiced Protagonist.

Yes like a business. A business that has moved past its original audience. Wouldn't be such a terrible thing if Beth RPG types were a dime a dozen. But they're not.

...Fallacy. LOL at assuming all change is inherently for the better. How new to this are you?

I'm going to make a mod that replaces the male conversation lines with my famous Christopher Walken impersonation.

'Because.. you know.. it's crazy.. this wasteland.. like.. molerats.. if you can think like a molerat.. then you can anticipate them.. and boom!.. that's right.. I killed it.

I put a bullet in it's eye.

Then I put two more into it.. you know.. just to make sure.'

All you do for a counter-argument is question the person's age. I'm 23 years old, born March 9th, 1992. But please...tell me again how I'm 12 or 13. There's no arguing with you because all you do redouble on your beliefs without even thinking over the opposing side's arguments. Why should i spend time giving you anything concrete when all you do is act pouty and stubborn in response?

Voiced dialogue isn't "dumbing down" and to imply such disparages legitimate arguments for such.I'm not a Bethesda apologist, I've made a video excoriating Bethesda for their treatment of the Fallout series ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TelWEj-RU5A) and there's very little of Fallout 4 that is redolent of the original Fallout games.

But articulating lines of dialogue isn't eschewing depth, but rather the inclusion of 4 mapped dialogue options that merely contain a holophrase rather than an articulated sentence is dumbing down IMO.

As is the gradual removal of skills and player stats, leaving a system that is becoming more indicative of modern FPS games, or distilling morality as merely a choice of good or bad (Fallout 3 being culpable of this).Or the expungement of any meaningful consequences in Fallout 3 (hopefully the new fail stats in fo4 rectify this).

... You win.

Yes, it's dumbing down. Limiting dialogue lines and limiting RP potential. All in the name of pandering to people that can't be bothered to read a sentence.

You've yet to form an argument. "Beth made it this way, grow up" isn't an argument.

Yes please.

As for the topic at hand (the actual topic made by the OP), I don't think his tweet was much of a spoiler. Doesn't really imply much besides the Sole Survivor from Vault 111 shooting someone. I guess we now know the Sole Survivor shoots someone important? Which one could have guessed would likely happen at some point in the plot?

Yeah I don't see anything spoilery there at all. Saying the 111 Vault Dweller shot ____ in a Fallout game is like saying you drive a car in a racing game. That's a given.

Sure, if you're metric for objectively terrible and/or bad is: "they're not doing what I want anymore." Which actually seems to be the case with you so... yeah. :bolt:
