Bribe Guards?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:40 pm

Speechcraft
When you're caught, you have a new option to offer an automatic percentage like a quarter or third of the value you've stolen, the guard may say "You're not gonna bribe me, criminal scum" and you are given a chance to save your scalp trying with a juicier amount closer to the total.
This may succeed or not based on Speechcraft and naturally his standing towards you, but if it doesn't you're forced to pay a now bigger bounty, go to jail or resist arrest.

Because thieves are thieves, guards are guards and you know the deal among them.

Yup, goes a long way to increase immersion.

Just one thing.

THIS IS SP..SKYRIM
but yes I like this, and you could bribe a guard ahead of time in Oblivion and he would forgive whatever you did

Yeah that isn't a new idea. It was pretty much in Oblivion.

As said above, if a guard's disposition toward you is high enough, they'll let you go. The only way to get it high enough is through charm spells or speechcraft/bribing just before committing a crime.

It depends just a speech check + goldie lots is not any better than "pay the fine".
If it was based on standings, skills, guard types, city.... etc, etc, I'd like it.
Otherwise the ol' resist and flee for your life to a doyen for the bribe will do me for realism.

the disposition had to be 100 though so this was impossible to do with just bribing

I think keeping it more or less like Oblivion is the way to go. If you could just commit crime/bribe guard/profit, it'd make crime largely inconsequential once you get a little cash flow going.

That sounds like a good idea, though since I'm assuming that the Thieves Guild or a similar organization is in, and you can pay them to get rid of your bounty, I think it might be more appropriate for bribing guards to be something you do before hand in order to make them "not see" you commiting a crime, obviously there should be some risk involved, so you can't just bribe guards whenever you're going to do some nefarious deed to avoid any concequences. The concequences for failing a bribe could include the guard just not accepting, the guard arresting you for attempting to bribe an officer of the law, or the guard taking the money, but still not ignoring your crimes, with the chance of success and which outcome you get if you fail depending on your character's speechcraft skill, how much gold you paid, and probably some factors on the guard's part.

Disposition based on:
* Your fame with that culture.
* The targets fame with that culture.
Means you have to build a reputation with the people you're gonna steal from. Makes it easier to bribe if you're respected and the target is not. For beginning characters, it may be wise to steal from one culture and sell at another. Cultures may have inter relationships too we should have to worry about.

That and guards need to not be omniscient, so that if someone sees you commit a crime then they actually have to report you and the guards dont automatically know where you are.

I hope that, if this gets implemented, there are several guards that are uncorruptible, and will throw the book at you if you attempt to bribe them.

I encourage this idea. I think it'd add a nice, deep level of immersion to the game not currently available. And that's always good. :)

I don't like this idea
it seems exactly the same as paying the fine.
if it was less than paying the fine, then having the pay the fine option is completely useless
if it was only for guards you like, then you've likely spent money bribing, making it about the same as paying the fine, and still useless.

if you just got off the hook for having good speechcraft and not having to pay, it should only be for small crimes and not murder, which isn't that much anyway, making it near useless

I really don't see the point

edit: The only way i can see this working if it was something like the final perk for speechcraft

i'm pretty sure the ability to straight up bribe a guard when they came to arrest you was in Oblivion, but disabled for some reason. i've seen the dialogue topics while leafing through the construction set but i've never actually stumbled across the actual dialogue in-game.

regardless, i'm super cool with this. there should be more ways to resolve most conflicts than standard fight or flight.

Actually... sometimes its worth paying more than the fine, if it means you don't get hauled somewhere and all your stolen goods confiscated.

I like the idea but it should also be dependent on your speechcraft skill and disposition to the faction and only for smaller crimes/fines murder is a no no

oh right, I forget that happened in oblivion, I was stuck in the morrowind train of thought, if you paid the fine you didn't get taken anywhere
I still think it'd make other things next to useless

You'd still need the required skills, not like any bloke can pull it off...

Only if you can't bribe every guard in the entire game. There should be no more than like 30% of the guards can be bribed or something. Some law enforcement are crooked, most of them aren't and if you can bribe every single guard in the entire game it will be stupid.
