BRILLIANCE, Bugs, and Preston Garvey

Post » Sat Feb 13, 2016 8:52 am

I have a confession to make. I'm not as young as the great majority of people who visit this forum, or who play Fallout 4. (Probably.) I was a kid back during the Cold War era, living in a little aqua tract house in a little neighborhood....well, you get the connection... I experienced the constant undercurrent of fear about atomic annihilation, the absurd ideas going around, the talk about fallout shelters, drop and duck, the futuristic visions of swoopy cars not unlike the rusted shells found all around the Fallout landscape. In fact, I feel kind of like a vault-dweller myself...

When my son begged me to play this game, I thought well, the last attempt with Fallout 3 was somewhat interesting at first, but got old fast..I never went very far with it. But then I decided to give this one a try. The idea of attempting, however rudimentarily, to rebuild civilization after a nuclear holocaust, was intriguing for a game. It was more than a shooter. I soon found myself immersed. It's a kind of exorcism of the demons of the Cold War....little aqua house and swoopy car relics and the music on the radio.... Along with super mutants, feral ghouls, and two headed cows to remind you what you woke up to after it all went down. Not terribly realistic there, but this is a fictional metaphor for many things we fear...not to get too deep here.

I've watched the progress of video games over the years from little dots on a screen to beautifully animated and detailed worlds and characters. I've done some 3d modeling of realistic humans and some attempts at learning how to animate them. So I'm in awe of what goes on under the hood of a game like this. It's fascinating to watch the NPCs mill around and hang out when you build them a bar, to see them work in the fields you plant, go about routines. In an open world with construction going on, to make these characters update what they do to occupy a settlement is just mind-boggling.

What Bethesda has done here is to create an open world full of stories, which is their trademark since Morrowind. But also, this one plays like an interactive movie, with a very poignant and relevant overall arc, yet it is still an open world, where you can build and salvage, make decisions, and work with companions and their stories. There are some great moments - I won't go into spoilers. I hope there will be a way for all the factions to work together and not repeat the mistakes of the past, but from what I have inadvertently read, that may not be the case... I may skip the ending.

The Minutemen, for me, are the simple heroes of the game, and an echo of ideals which are worth perpetuating. They are rebuilders and defenders of settlements, drawn from the settlers themselves. I only wish we could persuade and recruit some of the raiders (they are just humans trying to survive, after all -- they simply need an attitude adjustment) instead of having to kill them all -- that would be another level of depth to think about.

Which brings me to Preston Garvey. Yes, Preston. Who, for me and a lot of other people, has been bugged since early in the game. He keeps telling me he's got my back and will follow me anywhere, yet he's too bugged to permit dialogue options, so...well, most of you know the story. This unfortunately breaks the most important aspect of the game for me, as my character's heart lies with the minutemen.

My character had an interesting time with Curie and Nick and Codsworth, and Piper (whose crush did get annoying after awhile) but now she has to go around with that clunky gung-ho Palladin Danse....and well, I just know that's not gonna work out. The Brotherhood has a lot of prejudices she is just not cool with. After all, one of her favorite hangouts is the Slog, and the ghouls there are cool people, making the best out of the fact they are all burned up from radiation! One of the more realistic and poignant aspects of the game... And Nick the Synth is one of her best buds. She needs to team up with Preston, as the Minutemen are her people, accepting of everyone who is trying to build a better world, and she's grown rather fond of him.

I started a thread elsewhere on the PG bug, but it seems to be a bit bogged down.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1589914-preston-garvey-still-bugged/

I was hoping for constructive ideas on events, etc, that might nudge Preston back into availability as a companion. It happened for some other people I've heard from, but so far no luck for my game. My character is level 40 now, and this happened around level 10. I have no intention of going back to a save that early in the game and redoing everything.

But I don't want to just complain, or argue what bug needs to be fixed more than others. I do want to offer my view of this brilliant game, the amazing work on concept, development and execution that's gone into it, and an encouragement to the capable minds at Bethesda to please find a fix, any fix, to get Preston back into action. After all, you've created something that touches people emotionally here -- I've read some intelligent and passionate discussions about whether synthetic individuals can have self-awareness, for example. Be proud of what you've created here, it is food for thought. And you've got the brains to figure out how to get arguably the most important male NPC back in the game. I have confidence in you.

I love you post. Bravo. And I am glad you appreciate and are enjoying the game.

As to Preston, I am not sure where you need to go on him. He has never bugged for me, but I would guess that it depends on the events that led up to your being unable to communicate with him.

If you could, perhaps, give us a little more detail on your interactions with him up to the present unusable state, some of our wiser forumers may be able to give you some suggestions.

Great post and +1 on Preston Garvey fixes. The cause lies somewhere in how you approach the Castle quest, and isn't important anymore to people like me and Locrian that have a buggy Preston. So if anybody has experienced this and somehow gotten him to come around, please do share!

Hello Locrian,

I just read your post - I saw the same things in the cold war time, but from the European side B) Less shelters, but not less nonsense in a nutshell....

That said - a little Google search found solutions for your problem. Having done the Taking Independence quest (no spoilers here) the problem seems to arise during a step, which some players ignored or overlooked. It still is sloppy programming, if this is required or a severe bug happens. I never had the problem, since I do not want to have Preston as a companion, him being my 'adjutant' of a sort is enough...

You do not tell here if you are playing on console - so I will link solutions (I do not know if they work!!!) for PC:

From Steam Forums - obviously for PC:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/377160/discussions/0/496881136902358151/

Page 1 of this thread, and followups - it is a console command you need.

If you are playing on console it seems there is no solution for now - pity.

On the other hand, you need an adjutant anyway, pick another companion. The companions in this game are the best Bethesda ever delivered - in terms of comments and behavior, not the AI, sadly.

I agree with the others, great post man! And I do think that in all the complaining that goes on in forums such as these, we tend to forget just how amazing games are in our day and age, and how talented the developers that work on them are. I'm a huge fan of Bethesda, because so far they seem to avoid the monetization of their games and instead build something that I personally love and they seem dedicated on making it the best it can be. So kudos to them!

I personally think Preston is an awesome companion, and so the bugs he has associated with him are a bummer, to say the least, because they drag his character down until that's all people associate him with. Replaying the moment when you meet his group in Concord for the first time, I'm struck with how much care was put into developing that meeting and setting you off on the path of the Minutemen. I love Preston's optimism and agree with him that the Minutemen are the good guys. Preston's opinions were also really important to me, as he was one of the first people I met that I felt an immediate sense of companionship and basic trust, and so when he mentioned the Railroad being all right, that really nudged me in a certain direction.

I think it is more than reasonable to assume that Bethesda is going to do what they must to make Preston work as intended, and in fact, I would wager that we might see further development of the characters with future DLC or potentially the free addons. Bethesda has really crafted some of their best NPCs in Fallout 4, and people really don't realize what they miss out on by not having companions around when they go through the story quests. In fact, it seems like a bit of a crime that you aren't encouraged to take Preston with you early on in the game! (Nick V. does offer to tag along once you get to know him, which is something I greatly appreciated). I think Bethesda has learned a lot from developing companion characters for this game and I'm excited to see what they are going to develop in the future, but I will get behind your post 110% in saying let's turn Preston from the meme he is now into the awesome character we know he truly is!

Shout out to Bethesda for making another awesome game. Keep patching it up and polishing it guys. Can't wait for the new survival tweaks and the DLC! Don't make me wait too long please lol :)

Well, it's difficult to re-create all the events, but here are some facts I recall:

Preston had been my companion, but was not at the time of the quest where the minutemen take back the castle and kill the queen mireluk. I think Piper was.

I had sent Preston to Sanctuary when I took up with Piper. Of course he showed up at the castle during the quest.

I did get the tower and water tank up and running at the castle directly after the battle.

I met with Preston back at Sanctuary where he made my character General. I had given him some protective gear, but left his minuteman hat on.

I continued on with Piper.. I did several settlement procurement quests. I took up with Codsworth to progress the main story a bit, looking for Shaun. Figured he was Shaun's nanny, so... ;-)

Took Nick around for a little bit.

I kept checking in with Preston after the settlement quests. Did a lot of building and scrapping. At some point in that process, he stopped offering dialogue and just offered quest completions and new settlement quests. Attempting to dialogue just resulted in one of his stock lines about having my back and following me anywhere and respecting me and all that. He was in Sanctuary all that time, and I kept returning there as home base. The little aqua house hard to get away from ;-)...

I do notice, going back through completed quests, that several of the 'defend the settlement' quests do not have a check mark next to the 'report to Preston Garvey' step, yet they are marked as completed. I think that might be because when I went to report back to him, there was more than one issue to report, and he only responded to one of them before giving me another quest. Sometimes speaking again would update the second quest report, sometimes not, and sometimes he would just give yet another quest, so there tended to be more than one going at once. Perhaps this is an issue with the programming of responses.

More recently, I tried to nudge him by sending him via the workshop move options to the castle. Figured if I didn't see him as often, he might reset.

My husband, who has been playing F4 along on his own identical xbox, with some variation in what he does when, but pretty similar overall, also developed this bug soon after the castle mission. I think we assumed Preston wouldn't talk because he wanted us to do settlements first, so we didn't think much of it for awhile. At around level 35, Preston's dialogue came back for him, and he was able to take him along. I've been trying to ensure I've done all the settlement quests he has, but so far no luck. If anything, I've done more to develop those settlements defensively and power-wise, but I may still be getting more 'defend the settlement' quests.

We are looking into what he did right before Preston came back to see if I can replicate that at all. Though we have done some different side missions, and received settlement quests in a somewhat different order.

Thanks!

I'm on xbox so I guess the PC commands won't work there, pity. Maybe this will help someone else though, or give someone a clue how to fix on console?

"Less shelters but not less nonsense", Ha Ha, love that. I never saw a shelter, actually, but somehow we were made to feel we were screwed if we didn't have one. Personally, I could never see the point... Since we learned in school that radiation persisted for thousands of years and, well, you have to come out WAY before that...

I guess you've read the wiki entry for Preston.

The entry states it's a known bug and offers some workarounds that have resulted in a fix for some.

A stab in the dark

Have you tried removing any generators at the castle then redoing them later?
