I'm assuming you're referring only to the male voice (It's strange how commonly people seem to assume the males of a race make up the entire race, sometimes), otherwise Morrowind and Oblivion shared the exact, same Dunmer voice on the female side of this. On the topic of the male voice, I really don't like it in Morrowind. I don't like Oblivion's either. How could every male of a single race possibly have such a nearly nonexistant voice? In contrast, the females somehow had actual voices while the males couldn't even utter a battle cry. I don't like it. The Dunmer culture must not get very many male singers or male public orators with such voices... or rather a lack of voices. I want male Dunmer to have a powerful, deep voice, but what they had in Morrowind could hardly be called a voice at all, so the key point is that I want them to have a voice... a strong voice. I don't want a struggling whisper (Morrowind) or a wimpy, high-pitched voice (Oblivion). I want a strong voice. The Dunmer are strong people, correct? Have their voices reflect it. The females have strong voices, and so should the males, in my opinion.
This. I agree. Just as the character models are getting a huge overhaul, I am sure we'll see some new voice work as well. If not, I'd be disappointed.
I had always thought there must be some historical explanation for the voice. I mean, they were changed to Dunmer, getting dark gray skin and red eyes....so perhaps they all inhaled a bunch of volcanic ash from the events at Red Mountain and then from subsequently living there. I mean, when I first heard that voice, the first thing that popped into my mind was: smoker.
Ever heard an old smoker? Or someone with emphysema? That voice is actually very similar to those imo. Perhaps that was the intent when they decided on a voice for them originally....
Considering they only decided to call the game The Elder Scrolls because it sounded magical and cool, why could they not have chosen the Dunmer voice for Baker to do because they figured the Dunmer might sound like that from living in Morrowind (AKA the Ashland)???
Anyway, whatever the reasoning for the voice, I think some updating and variety amongst NPCs, including male and female voices, are called for to make Skyrim that much better.
