Bring tower shields back!

Post » Thu Jun 24, 2010 8:11 am

There wasnt any in Oblivion was there(Please let me know if there is)?I think they were pretty damn cool in Morrowind.

Also,I am worried. The blocking...so in Skyrim if you hold the block button down awhile,it bashes with the shield? So I cant move slowly anymore towards my enemy while blocking?

Shield bash is now when you hold your shield trigger and then pull the attack trigger, so it won't be confused with movement.

According to the inside x-box UK edition where they interviewed Todd Howard he said (if your shield is in your left hand) "You hold the left trigger and it brings up your shield. Then if you press the right trigger it executes a shield bash"

basicly yea, since they wanted blocking to be more dynamic and about trying to match attacks with blocks, don′t expect to cower behind a shield while running towards a foe.

Yeah... That's what one of the international mags reported I believe. Probably a misunderstanding. This interview is a video and straight from Todd Howard's mouth.

(I've edited my first post with the video. Huge thanks to 360RPGplayer of these here forums for capturing it and uploading it for us not UK folks )

Edit* @M3LA I don't see why not. There is no information that would lead me to believe that you can't walk while holding up your shield.

this is the impression I got too *shrugs* both ways works for me

As for Tower shields, personally I find them out of place in a single player game, the reason they where use in RL warfare was in groups to create effective shield walls, but as a lone warrior, tower shields would just be clumsy.

" you can bash with the shield by pulling it up then pressing right trigger" sounds like they changed it from the last i've heard, how would you bash while weapons are equipped?

Huh? You obviously just can't attack and block at the same time. So, if wanted to attack you would let go of the left trigger then press the right trigger. :)

By "pulling it up" he meant holding the block key. Like if you had the shield in your left hand, you would hold down the left mouse button (left trigger) and then click the right mouse button (right trigger) to shield bash.

If you wish to attack simply don't pull your shield up first.

But... if you use your right trigger to shield bash... what happens if you have TWO shields?

Also I'm not sure, I think you might actually not be able to walk with your shield raised, I swear it was said that blocking is time based now, so it would make sense for you not to be able to.

we can assume weapon blocking only comes into play if you don′t use a shield, the controls would be the same, just you block with a appropriate weapon (and instead of shield bashing, maybe we push our foe with the blocking weapon)

Does the no block mean that a dual-wielder will have to dodge arrows/magic all the time?
I guess that a Spellsword will be able to fire magic back at an archer, but they've really made this character choices meaningful, haven't they!

hey no problem =)
also, I'm not from the UK either, I'm canadian

anyway, tower shields add more verity which is always a good thing.
also, I hated the idea of hold both triggers to black, I like the way it was stated in the interview

This is excellent news, it also feels natural, raise shield then use attack to bash.

it also show that we should not trust magazines to much, everything is filtered first that the developer says, then that the reporter understand (they have not clocked 1000 hours in Morrowind and Oblivion), then that get printed.
